Reflecting on some of the North management comments over the last week - I wonder if JHF was enthusiastic with North and indicated he really wanted to go there and be number 1 pick to encourage them not to trade with Adelaide last year.

It would have been almost impossible for him to move from Adelaide to Port via trade and still live comfortably in the state. I suspect Port was into him before the draft working with him on how he could eventually get to them. Even the name change late in his draft year flagged his strong link to the Power

He seemed to turn on North from the moment he got over there - planting seeds to be able to force a trade. I do think they expected him to stay an extra year but Dunkley turning them down and Clarkson issue flaring up probably had both parties seize the opportunity to make it happen a year early

Funny seeing some of the North reactions now saying how good it is to rid themselves of a flog and actually that makes the trade good

Maybe if they actually bothered to interview him they would have known he was a flog and taken one of the massive offers for pick 1 last year instead of settling for HUGE unders this year

After a big day in the trade world for South Australia and happy that we got Rankine but admittedly envious that the neighbours got JHF, I decided to take my mind off the AFL and in particular Port last night and watch the American spy thriller series, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. I digress but bare with me.

So a few episodes in and things started heating up in the show, then it happened while it was playing in the background, it nevertheless rattled me.

I heard these words being played in the background.....

All I could think of us was those campaigners from Alberton, looking up at the sky waving their flags above their heads.

Yep.. and Dangerfield pledged he wouldn't leave after Phil Walsh died (as did lever) and danger left and won a brownlow, and a premiership (as did lever). Footy works in mysterious ways indeed. (Sometimes it works out for dickheads.)

Think we would have still found a way to land Dawson, which likely would have cost us Soligo +.

We would have missed out on Rachele.

Agree we would have used our future 1st then on Rankine.

Kidding yourself, no way Rankine would ever head to port..He grew up supporting crows, loves the club and talked about how much it was his dream to play for the crows and was quoted saying this in his SA under 18’s days. He would just stay at GC and wait for the timing to be right if that was the case.

This is the only reason why I think we paid slight overs for rankine as we played hard ball last season with Dawson, but yet we knew Rankine wanted to come to us and we folded like a Sunday deck chair and gave away pick 5 and then some to a minnow club like GCS..

Got bullied by the weak kid and stole our lunch money.. piss weak

Looking at it now, it has not worked out too badly for north. Yes, they are set back by a year, but they get

• two further rolls of the best draft dice
• an unhappy and possibly destabilizing player off their books

They would have done better if they took our reported suicidal offer last year, but this is not doom and gloom for them at all. Might be different if he’d had a daicos-like year, but he had a soligo-like year.

All year I have thought his behavioural issues have been a massive concern, but so many people here were just so enamoured with him that they just turned a blind eye and blamed it all on North Melbourne.

I also wonder too had we traded for him last year whether we would have seen the same stuff happening with him, I think the chances are good that we would have.

I'm also not sold on the hype either, the "once in a generation talent", has been over used to death now.

To me he's still very much an unknown quantity at this point and his behaviour makes him a bit of a risk.

For the Crows I’m taking Dawson and Rankin as opposed to one JHF all day every day.

Ecstatic with getting Dawson and Rankin over the last two trade periods.

No doubt JHF could be massive in the future, according to the experts, but getting him to the Crows was always a bridge too far. I’m glad North didn’t accept our offer last year.
