Traded Jason Horne-Francis [to Port Adelaide in multi-club trade]

Are GWS looking to use picks 3, 12, 15, 18 and 19 purely for the draft? Or do they want to get some players in via trade?

Maybe we could upgrade pick 33 or 43 for one those later picks and offer up Byrne-Jones or Bonner?

We genuinely need to trade away a player for 2nd round. Can't see it happening another way.

Hayes, Drew, Bonner, DBJ, Farrell. DBJ with most value in that lot perhaps as an All-Australian and club BnF although he was off it best this year. I know he just resigned but yeah either him or Drew

In all seriousness North have actually done fine out of this deal. So have West Coast. GWS showed up, bent over and handed over the lube to make it work for everyone else, and I salute them for it.
Yeah I think north have done well. What more can you hope for to get for a player that wants out than a similar pick + a future 1st on top. That’s a good deal.

Also west coast, despite people knocking them to get out of pick 2 and the private school vic boys and into hewett territory , whose not far behind, if at all those vic boys plus get another pick. That’s good for them.

Ports given up a lot, but the fact we get future 2nds and 3rds back helps a lot,

In the end rozee butters jhf Bergman sinn to look forward too in our midfield.

I really rate that group of players as a future midfield. High end young talent there.

I honestly don't think quality youngsters is North's biggest issue.

Davis-Uniacke, Thomas, Zurhaar, Taylor, Scott, McKay, JHF etc all have the potential to be that top end core if they're provided with enough solid role players around them. I'm not sure about Powell, Phillips, Mahoney, Xerri, and a few other youngsters making it, but there's plenty to work with in the right system.

Powell will be fine, so should Phillips once he gets over his illness holding him back.

Mahoney is not a long term prospect, and according to the North board, their admin have really lowballed Xerri and he is going to seek a trade again at season’s end.

The whole club from the board right through to Noble seems like a mess. Right now they remind of the last few weeks of Malthouse's pitiful tenure at Carlton.

I do not believe Noble will survive another 10 goal plus loss in the next month

If that club has lowballed Xerri, they deserve all the flak they get AND I'll be ropeable if they get given a priority pick for being a basket case

Agreed. Carlton never really covered until now lowballing Eddie.

North are playing a very dangerous game if they are been run like an Accounting firm and not giving players like Xerri their fair renumeration

Surely they would have the cap space to give him what he wants, especially with Goldstein most likely moving on ?

Do you reckon CCJ comes into consideration when thinking about X's contract?

I think CCJ is better off as a defender and Xerri more of a ruck myself, but North fans would know more, but I think he has shown enough that it would be a fairly big loss if they lost him (mainly due to being penny pinchers)

Xerri is ok at best. It's not about paying what he wants, we may not move forward with him. He was very ordinary without anything that stands out for the start of his career (and if St Kilda stumped up he'd be there), he had a surprisingly good pre-season and held his own until injury. Nobody is robbing Xerri and he's no walk up guarantee once his injury is over.

Interesting. I don't think I've seen CCJ as a defender mentioned before. I could definitely see it, but I still lean towards forward being his optimal position personally.

I think North are really lacking in tall timber down back, and Ben McKay, as good as he is, clearly cannot do it all on his own.

I think they need to try it for a game or two anyway, their backline imo is currently North's biggest weakness, they won't win many more games this year, but they need to stop getting scored so heavily against

And this is also where I have concerns about Noble as coach, seems way too conservative as coach and doesn't try mixing it up/changing things, especially when teams start piling on the goals against them in a run on

Teague was very similar in that regard at Carlton..

3 firsts for 1 + 2nd?

I'd take it. It's literally moving down 5 spots for a top 5 pick + upgrade
No I read it as a 6 pick downgrade for a first and probably 3 or four pick upgrade in the process losing our best chance of landing a genuine superstar in recent times

I like rachelle but I don’t really get enthused about pick 6 2022 pick six and probably 2022 pick 18 , there will probably be very good players but we need probably elite players and JHF is that.

You might not have taken Rachelle. Pick 6 + Pick 18 + top 5 pick for pick 1 + pick 20 is a no brainer to me.

I said it then and I stand by it now.

Yeah solid point. No harm in trying it at this point, especially if he's going to play VFL at various times during the season.

I outlined the reasons why I disagree. HF was rated miles ahead of any available draftees in his group.

And who’s to say we wouldn’t get the same player at the pick 18 that we would at 20 do that’s effectively a wash so take into account we lose value by not taking a guy rated a considerable distance ahead of the pack in his class we lose value there . Note there was a perceived gulf in class after pick 4 in 2021.

So we lose value on the 2021 pick swap
Gain a first rounder
Wash on 2022 late first/2nd

End up with two poential very good players
Or one potentially elite player

I’m going for the elite player , because we don’t have any other elites.

2 pick swap = wash
5 pick = downgrade not worth a top 5 pick.

It's just not logical. But I'd blindly back my club in to so I'm wasting my time trying to explain it to you.

I’m sure not many people bar Freo supporters could watch last week but CCJ went back for a while when McKay got injured (I think Goldy and CCJ became “resting” defenders). Neither looked good there and that was a fairly standard forward line.

I’m just saying as a club we needed something like JHF and that the package wasn’t a massive as made out. But yes I see your point

The club think Horne-Francis is a generational player. They didn't rate anyone else in the draft as being close to him really. 2 top 5 picks for pick 1 sounds like a good deal on paper but North were never close to entertaining that deal, that's how highly they rate Horne-Francis (rightly or wrongly).

We haven't had anyone on the list with this much talent since the 90's and it's far to say if you don't have at least one of them, then you probably can't win a flag.

Yep, agree. That's their biggest problem, not their youngsters. Place those young blokes within a well-run organisation, which is clearly not North atm, and I reckon they'll be fine. At least as good a bunch of kids as the Hawks, Crows, Saints, Pies and some other mid-level teams.

Low-balled is a bit strong. He's an average AFL ruck and below average forward, nothing more, nothing less. You can find these guys with relative ease late in the draft or in the state leagues. The last average ruck we paid overs to was Preuss and we ended up swapping bad contracts with Melbourne for Tyson. If someone wants to offer him 4 years at $400k+ and give North fair compensation then we'll wish him well.

Got better kids than the Saints and Crows overall imo/lineball with The Pies and Hawthorn.

Starting to get some alarm bells about Adelaide's rebuild tbh too.
