Player Watch Jordan Dawson - Our New Captain!

To be fair, it wasn't as if his numbers weren't really down to start the season, he was just burning it terribly by foot - but was still getting the inside 50 entries. His class just starting to show again.
I specifically recall being frustrated with Dawson on his earlier games this year too. He shanked more kicks in those earlier games than he did for probably an entire season of last year! At least that’s what it genuinely feels like.

Jordan Dawson turns 28 shortly into next season.

Will he be in his prime during our next premiership tilt, or past it, or not even in the side?

He'll be starring in the Noel's Caravans ads by then.

I think that is a part of the reason some of us have been saying that we have a young and emerging list, so throw everything at the present or next few years, as well as longer term. Add an ANB, Cumming, Lukosius. We will get a Sid Draper or similar who is ready to go and add x factor to our midfield along with Rankine. Why can't the next tilt be both immanent and longer term?

I don't think it's actually possible to throw everything at the present or next few years AND at the longer term? You would need to have 2 everythings to throw.

Surely Dawson should be pushing behind the scenes for a new coach of he doesn't want to waste the rest of his career.

We need to improve our midfield so we can release Dawson to HB

Zorko at the age of 35 has been instrumental in the way the Lions play especially when they take the game on and play aggressively

Dawson has the ability to be one of the most damaging QB style HB in the game, and it will preserve his body so he can play well into his 30s

I've been saying this for the last 12 months - yet we keep on wasting him forward.
He's an elite weapon across half back. He's not a forward. Even remotely.
To have wasted 12 months with him resting as a forward is enough to sack the entire coaching panel.

Our midfield struggled and Nicks still moved him to HB. he was very good there but Rankine was out injured and suspend and Soligo tired so he exposed our midfield by not playing last year's AA midfielder.

Hard to say. He's pretty outside, so it's likely he'd hang on for the next 4-5 years.

Seeing Fog, Rankine and Thilthorpe are starting to push into prime years, the list isn't that far away from contention, either. Could easily be next year with some tweaks to the game plan and fixing 1-2 areas.

Geelong seem to manage it

If you're using the post-2019 Crows logic he's near enough to past it to start looking for a replacement and/or initialise a full rebuild again. Maybe with the aim of dropping to the point of receiving priority picks to finally check that checkbox off.

If Adelaide were seized by rationality, that's ridiculous.

For what it's worth, I have a reasonable degree of confidence that Dawson could keep playing well into his mid-30s.

He's only played 131 games and it's not like he relies on his speed. Think he doubles his games count from here – at least.

Plenty of players are still at career best form past their 30s these days. Especially for a guy like Dawson, who was a relatively late starter to AFL, I think it’s super achievable to have another 5 or so years of elite footy in him.

Dawson will likely slide to half back as his career goes on

Hopefully by the time that happens we have a coach who can figure out how to not let him get dragged to the last line of defence by his opponent

Being in those areas and on the last line is part of being an interceptor and a half-back flanker. After all, a key part of the job is intercepting. Equally, you want your more damaging offensive players around the point a turnover would happen as they have the highest chance of at least breaking being pinned in a D50.

Keeping Dawson away from those areas ironically wastes him as a player and weakens a defensive unit if he is playing half back flanker. Arguably it also wastes him as a midfielder as well.
