Judd's number is up for blues
Michael Gleeson | October 30, 2007

JOSH Kennedy agreed to move home to Perth to facilitate the Chris Judd trade. It seems now he also might provide Judd not only with his new jumper but the number to wear on his back.
After turning out for his first gentle training session with his new teammates at Princes Park, Judd left the ground stopping to sign autographs for fans. He scrawled his name on a tram ticket for one anxious fan, interestingly writing alongside his name "5" . It is customary for players to write their number next to their name in an autograph. Kennedy wore No. 5 for Carlton this year.
These matters normally are more consequential for fans than players. And certainly for coaches.
"There are a few numbers up for grabs; we will let Chris pick whatever number he wants or the club can put whatever they put in place. As long as he runs out, he can put number 00 or 105 on it doesn't bother me," coach Brett Ratten said.
The number might be settled. As to whether Judd assumes the captaincy, that will be determined closer to the season. Ratten admitted the leadership group next season would be halved to about six players and Judd would be in the mix, while last year's No. 1 pick Bryce Gibbs would be saved that pressure to focus on his game.
"When you get a player of Judd's quality and what he's done in a short period of time, only 24, if you look at his record it is outstanding — captain of a premiership team, best and fairest, All-Australian, Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith, the list goes on. To have a player around like that, I think our players are excited because they learn from him," Ratten said.
The coach was equally excited to have Judd on the track, even if it was for stationary drills with recuperating full-forward Brendan Fevola, who was looking decidedly heavier from being unable to exercise after recent shoulder and hand surgery.
The Judd arrival was more welcome than the recent publicity for the club, with the publication of Anthony Koutoufides' book.
Ratten yesterday diplomatically said he would rather the things Koutoufides said had been kept private but made no comment on the substantive matters raised.
"Kouta is a great player and Denis (Pagan) has been a fantastic coach — two premierships in 15 years. You don't like to see these things put in the paper … you look at it and you wish it didn't happen," he said.
But on one issue at least, the new coach admitted to being in accord with Koutoufides. Carlton no longer would try to get players physically up and in peak playing fitness for the pre-season competition.
"No, it is not (a key priority). Our list management is our priority and making sure that when round one comes, we are ready to go," Ratten said.
"We will pick the team that is ready to go. If Brendan is not ready to go, he won't play. We will look after our players, we will make sure our focus is round one. But if all our players are up and going and ready to go by NAB Cup round one, well, we will play them but if not, we will hang onto them and put them out when they are ready."
Koutoufides criticised the acute focus in recent years on the pre-season competition, which he said caused players to burn out by the season being too long.
The arrival of Judd and the other off-field changes at the club mean that excuses no longer were offered or accepted at Carlton.
"The excuses are over, there is no doubt about it. We will have the youngest team in the AFL but we are growing as a group … I think you will see a lot more competitive unit at the Carlton Football Club."

just wondering.... what number would you give richard hadley?

I think you will see Hadley in 8, Kruezer in 10 etc if we maintain the policy we've used for a few years now in that new players that come in take the lowest available numbers. Judd taking 5 is in keeping with that policy.
