Was listening to Triple M at the ground and they all thought the free against Stewart to Lohmann in the first quarter was one of the worst frees of the year. It wasn’t late, it wasn’t high… the umpire paid it because he thought it looked too aggressive. Whichever umpire that was should not be allowed to umpire the GF next week.

Yep that was the beginning of the armchair ride.

Shocking free.

Thoughts on Mitch Duncan..?
Awful decision to make him sub after a good game against Port. Sending him in when we are being overrun is a terrible ploy.

We got little from Mullin or Bews defensively all night. Their smalls destroyed us. 14 goals/goal assists combined, compared to 4 for our small forwards.

Pathetic for you to fish for a reaction in a trolling way, is my overall consensus though.

Asking about Duncan is a serious question, not a troll. The fact he was named as sub is a statement and his form against Port was not great. The calls for both Bews and Mullin to play their roles were there- where would you have started Duncan? He has become frustrating to watch, given his former skills and prowess.

I guess an important thing to remember here is 'perspective'.

Footy is a human endeavour, and no matter how hard they train, or how fit they are, all players remain human. Ultimately they remain vulnerable to injury, mistakes and fatigue.

No player is perfect.

We demand excellence, and despite every attention to detail, a player can simply have a bad day. It takes an incredible amount of synchronisation to have 22 players ALL on song at the same time, and luck plays a part.

It only takes a simple mistake here, a simple mistake there, and the timing, balance, efficiency and system slowly deteriorates.

They gave their all, they did their best. They just weren't all able to co-ordinate flawlessly on the night, and some bad luck with injuries went against them.

We can't crucify them for that. We sing their praises when they put it all together, and should be a little circumspect when they don't.

They tried, they just fell short.

They're human.

I say this to my mates - it’s been very expensive to be a Geelong supporter over the past 20 years. So many expensive finals tickets. My Essendon and Carlton mates can’t relate and don’t show any sympathy.

Depending your age, it's been expensive since 89. The only years I can't recall much happening are 2001 and 2003. It's been pretty good otherwise.

Disappointed in the result but proud of the club.

At the end of 2023, no one saw us in the 2024 Prelim to lose by only 10 points to last year’s Grand Finalists. Particularly with a team without Guthrie, Hawkins, Rohan, Tuohy and I’ll even include Parfitt given his experience (did I miss anyone?).

No one saw the emergence of Dempsey to win the Rising Star. I had Knevitt in the 2024 team for sure.

At the end of 2023, if you’d said that our Prelim team would include Neale, Mullin, Dempsey, Humphries and Mannagh I’d have laughed at you.

At the end of 2023, if you’d also said that Holmes might yet be “Judd like” and our next Danger I’m not sure I’d have agreed.

We’ve come a very long way in 12 months.

Sure, we came up short and mistakes were made but we nearly pinched it. The bounce of the ball was against us and the umpires not great. We unnecessarily panicked (badly) in the third quarter. The sub needed to be made and my man Mitch would have provided the composure we needed to slow the game down.

We need to plan for the chaos ball into the opposition’s F50. That’s the way to beat us against our zone. The Saints and the Lions showed that.

The bright side is losing a prelim is far far less painful than a GF loss. Plus we won the lot in 2022!

So Holmes did have gastro
Bravely played , but soft tissue injuries are more prevalent when playing with viral illnesses. Just not meant to be. Good that he and others played finals this year, and will be really hungry next year. Holmes himself said he was naive enough to think 23 would be all about success again. Also said he and the team were not expecting the level of success we have had this year (spoken after the Port win)

Agree with all of that, the point about Mitch and slowing it down somewhat ironic.

Kornes says cats destroyed in the coaches box. Scott had no answers to Brisbane after half time when they sped up the game and took over 100 marks and used the corridor at will. Saints did the same weeks earlier in the 2nd half.
Scott needs to analyze that performance of the team and in the coaches box. 3-6 in prelims absolutely doesn’t cut it.

Watching last night I came away with the same observation. That saints game and the PF were eerily similar - even down to Duncan ineffectual sub. We don’t really have an answer for that type of game style especially as our players fatigue in the second half. I’m not sure how you defend against short 45 degree kicks and easy handball receives into another short 45 degree kick. Rips us apart.
You can only really defend against the ball carrier and take time away from them in picking their shot.

Retire him along with Stanley , Rohan and the other two already announced Touhy & Hawkins.
Guthrie big talks needed . We need more youth & pace in the midfield . When Holmes went off it was left to Bowes and turning circle Atkins. Those c graders couldn’t get near it under the heat of Brisbane pressure.

It was originally paid as a holding free kick

He then changed his call when he realised there wasn't a hold

Lions won clearances 43-33. The differential after half time would have been even greater I presume.

I agree with your points about some very poor decision making of our half forwards. Stengle in particular had some completely bizarre moments which cost us badly.

But I don’t think it’s unreasonable to also acknowledge that we were soundly beaten after half time by their midfield. Their ability to run and link up in transition killed us. They also fluffed some shots which should have had them further in front at times.
It should be clear to anyone that our midfield is a huge problem and killed us last night. Neale had 12/13 clearances alone... but people see what they want to see.

We have done very well to maximise what we have but our midfield doesn't win enough of the ball and does not hit the scoreboard enough. We lack dynamism and x-factor through there when Holmes is absent.

Time and time again we've seen teams get a hold on us and we leak goals, it all starts in the middle.

Absolutely garbage call. Up there with the worst free kick I've seen, and there's been plenty.

Does anyone know or know where to find the 4th Qtr inside 50 stats from yesterday's game?

On SM-G998B using BigFooty.com mobile app

According to the AFL app the inside 50s were 22-8 our way in the last.

We dominated the contests and got it forward but struggled to find space and be composed. On the other hand they carved us up on transition and got good looks the rare times they went forward.

Yeah surely will retire this week.

Short-term pain leads to long-term gain. We had to rejuvenate the list and Bruhn, Dempsey, Clark will be better for it in 2025 and beyond.

Duncan is currently in the same boat. If he goes on again, he is going to limit the development of a younger player unless he is willing to play VFL during different stages.
Dempsey had a poor finals series…. Didn’t get near it.

Duncan had a shocking first half against Port and then played a much better second half - the question has to be asked though, did his game really improve in the second half or was it the drop off in pressure from Port that made his game look better, in that he got more time & space than is afforded in a higher pressure game?

At halftime of the Port game, I had Duncan out for Stewart in our next match - obviously he held his spot, and maybe it was the lack of game time from Tuohy which worked against him in the end
