Ok

4 times leading goalkicker, All Australian, premiership player and will end up playing 250 games and kicking 500 plus goals for us.

Yep, he's a spud.

So you have been happy with his output and workrate the last twelve months??
All Australian 2019- 3 seasons ago
Lead goalkicker 2021- beating kennedy by 1 goal having played 3 more games and being 5 years younger.

Almost 30 he has shown no signs he can lead the forward line going forward recently at all.
A 100% credits in the bank selection atm.

Good when fit but he isnt fit by choice. Also not tall enough to be a true key forward target. Time is limited

At this point, Darling is basically Josh Jenkins when the Crows shipped him to Geelong for not much. He's been a great second target over the years, but he's not a leader and there's no point keeping him around in a rebuild.

Unfortunately this is demonstrably untrue, given the fact Darling is an All Australian, played a key part in our premiership, is a 4 time leading goal kicker, and even got to the point where he was called the best player in the competition for half a season.

And he’s ****ed up by ruining his preseason, but yes, he is comparable to Josh Jenkins.

How do you envisage trading a contracted player way from his own state?

Going on this year, he'd be the last player you'd want to get rid of IMO.
Added to which - its no coincidence out talls are coming on like we wish our mids would.

Ive never seen a player who jumps at the perfect time to have the ball arrive at the apogee of his jump like gov - and all the other talls are learning from him.

No

So in your view he was best player in the league 4 years ago so his credits in the bank tally sits at what?

Presumably a player of the same caliber as Jenkins would never be able to reach that level ever, that’s the argument. It means Darling has a higher standard he can reach.

I don't think it's an unfair comparison. Darling has a few more accolades, but they're statistically very similar over their careers. Screenshot_20220418-170929_Chrome.jpg

He had a higher standard he did reach… he is never going to reach it again..

The bottom line as a squad is that age/output normally leads pay. That is, you get more out of draftees and early contracts than it actually costs you in dollars.
At the end of career, when age and injuries are taking their toll, pay (while not as per the peak years (unless your name is Buddy)) is still quite high and you are not getting the same value (output) per dollar as you are from your 20-25 year olds. They're good but far from value for money.

Think Chris Judd. On reflection we actually went through that forced trade at the perfect time. Had him for his best performing years and while his pay was high it was still on a rocket trajectory while his performance had peaked. Carlton got the declining years of performance and the highest years of salary. We got the lowest years of salary and the best years of performance.

Those of you who have argued to trade people while they still are worth something might actually be onto something.
With my DeLorean working I've gone back in time and accepted from Carlton 2 x top 10 picks for McGovern and 2 x top 10 picks from Norf for Gaff. And we've got a lot of extra salary cap available to have chased someone from GWS or GC.
Our squad would be a lot younger and a lot better balanced. That huge hole we have of decent 22-27 year olds would actually have a few names in it.

And that's part of our problem. We have too many relatively highly paid and under performing 29+ year olds. We cannot afford to chase trade targets worthy of note because we don't have the cash. We also don't have the up and coming 18-22 year olds who should be the high performing, mid 20s in a few years time.

So, a list cleanout.
Is it urgently needed? Yes.
But the bottom line is it may happen by accident rather than any design from the club.
Hurn and JK. Surely they both retire of their own calling.
NicNat - one more injury away I feel. This is his last comeback.
Shuey - might well call it himself if he has another year of soft tissue injuries.
Redden - may need the tap on the shoulder but may see the writing and do it himself.

Then there is the inevitable 4-6 'didn't make it' amongst the young guys and rookies.

Without looking for fringe players to churn (which we need to do) we could still get a 10 player turnover without even trying.

Can't remember him ever playing Magoo's and don't think it will start now.

For all of the talk about dropping him, I can't see anyone ready to take his place TBH.

Allen when he comes back should take it but currently id still take McGovern from the backline and play him forward.. if barass and edwards are going to be our key backs going forward get that combo up and going now..

If not, dixon can play there or now we have strnadica back after a few runs williams is supposedly a forward more than a ruck. Put him there…

There are options but we are so set into positions that they wont do it..

Don't think you can take the leading CHB in the comp this year and throw him forward.
Especially when Edwards has been so poor.
IF OA was available, he's an option.

The other 3 you mentioned shouldn't even be in the conversation.

Gov‘s season so far is over rated. He is giving his opponents way to much space and he is the leader of a backline that has its pants pulled down more often than not.
I don’t get any buzz at all anymore watching him guarding space and taking 10 marks in a game. Go and lock your player down and if you don’t you can piss off.

Depends what he's being told to do by the coach doesn't it? Maybe Simmo wants him guarding space and taking 10 marks a game while his direct opponent kicks a bag

Overly generous. Duggan and Witherden are C grade back flankers that occasionally play as a B grader. After many seasons in they have shown their cards and rose coloured glasses dont help. The Developing A-B graders listed, well Harry would be absolutely dominating the WAFL with his physical atributes if he was A or B grade. L Edwards is ok but slow, the others havent played enough to say either way.
That's why I called it 'hopefully'

Absolutely correct and it was interesting what Barrass said the other night that they simply don’t lock down in defence so clearly the instruction is to guard space.
It just does my head in with the Stand on the mark rule that any coach could possibly allow players to give their opponents space. It looks as though the only coach that is seems to be Adam Simpson.

"Over rated"?

Was coming 3rd in the coaches votes coming into this round, which means the opportunity coaches really rated him as well.

Intercept marks aren't just taking space.

His season has been off the charts good.

I don’t see it that way and I take no notice at all what coaches votes are.
Coaches used to give Priddis votes every game and behind closed doors said let Priddis get it 50 times as he will have zero impact on the game.

Afree to disagree about Gov.
