We are 8-4 in games that Karl has played this year.

We are 6-0 in games where he has picked up 20+ disposals. I would be literally heartbroken if he left

Yeah but are we only winning because he's on 20+ disposals or is he only on 20+ disposals because we're winning?

Or are winning lots of contested footy in those 6 games and feeding it out to him and that's why he's got it 20 times?

Ok thought I'd answer my own question. Amon got 20+ against Carlton Brisbane at Gabba an GC in Shanghai when we smashed the oppo and all played well sign goes up. But last 3 times was our last 3 wins, St Kilda, Collingwood and Bulldogs and that's more impressive.

I rate him, we definitely missed him when he was out and I don't think it's a coincidence that we have a better record when he plays. I think he's good for team balance even if he isn't getting 25+ touches.

.... We are 6-0 in games where he (Karl Amon) has picked up 20+ disposals ....
Those games were Blues 24, Lions 21, Suns 26, Saints 20, Magpies 21, and Bulldogs 22.
As we so often have cause to say on this site correlation does not imply causation. In the first 3 of those the waterboy picked up 15+ disposals (may not have happened).
But I concede that he is actually improving. In the last few games I've actually noticed him making a contest and backing teammates up. I had him pegged as a 'bruise free/kick one goal' player. Oddly now that I'm noticing him getting stuck in we've lost the goal a game he gave us.

Agree Powerstufff, I have not been a fan of Amon but lately i am having another look. His laid back demeanor shouldn't be seen as lack of effort. I don't look at stats and heat maps but he has been handy deep in defense in recent times - receiving and then carrying/delivering with precision - i would like to see another year of improvement before letting him go.

Well it depends what the trade value is. Is he going to net a pick 20 or whatever O'Shea got offered a couple years ago? I wouldn't have thought so. So at what trade value do we say is ok to pull the trigger? Its all well and good to say "we can do better" but we don't have better on our list at the moment. If someone like Motlop does come then its only going to make Amon and his skills more valuable as he'll be awarded more space and less attention.

Now it may be that Amon wants to go back home. He's a vic metro boy, he was a big Saints fan and if they are sniffing then i'm sure it would be attractive for him, but i'd be pushing to keep him for sure.

Trading Amon for a mid-late second rounder in this years draft would really be rolling the dice.
I have been critical of Amon but there is no denying he's been on a linear increase in consistency and form.
I agree that he's not the cream in our side so you wouldn't sell the farm.
If we going to trade him, I wouldn't do it for a draft pick only a needed player. Personally though, I think we should keep him if the price is right.

Amon has only just turned 22 and has plenty of scope for further development.

As it is he's got pace and a fantastic kick on him both when field kicking as well as when kicking for goal.

I doubt he would be on huge coin either so assuming that then he offers good quality football for the money we would be paying him.

Id sign him for another 2 years and then reassess him when he turns 24.

The list needs to churn. In part because it's an AFL requirement, in part because it's good management and other good players don't rot in the reserves. We have to offer players who actually have value to pick up others - or picks. Amon's perfect for this - or keep him. But there's also this - is this his peak and thus his peak trade value? Or in another year do we wish we'd tapped out now?

This year I've come to appreciate Amon more. He's a pretty handy player to have. I'd like to keep him, but if we were to get something decent for him, I'd take it.

We have enough deadwood on our list including guys that are in and out of the AFL side that we don't need to trade out a first 22 player who's in the top few kicks in the side who we don't have a replacement for because of 'list churn'. Guys like AhChee, Young, Pittard, Trengove...fine. There are replacements there for those players ready to go. It's not the case for Amon.

I agree ... Have been watching our replays. There is not much wrong with his games. Good kicking to a player, not afraid to tackle, and he knows how to snap a goal.
How many of those type of players have we got in our team?

I'm usually pretty hard on players who don't hit the contest, but I'm of the opinion that with Amon it may be more of a confidence thing, than it is a Lonie like habit of avoiding the contest as much as possible.

All successful teams have had their quality outside ball distributors, and in what is supposed to be a shallow draft, where we would be lucky do get any better than a mid 2nd rounder for him it is probably better to retain him.

A 2 year contract, and reassess when he is 24 sounds about right to me.

Last year Amon was one of those jake Neade types who came in and out of the team and everyone hated as he was terrible and made so many mistakes but this year he has made big improvements and is doing very well for a pick 68 it would be a shame to lose him now but if a pick in the top 25 was offered I think we need to take it Motlop will be a fine replacement but keeping him will also be good as playing Motlop up forward instead of Sam gray or jake Neade would be a huge improvement.
Speaking of resigning any news on Logan Austin he is still uncontracted

I a
We need more players with quality foot-skills in our side, not less. I hope the club re-signs Karl. He's slowly becoming a pretty handy player.
I agree re the need for better foot skills and his kick does look good but his kicking stats were disappointingly below AFL average for a midfielder before the Collingwood game. I will have a look in the Record tonight but I doubt they have improved that much in 2 games. So if he isnt any better than AFL average despite how good his kick looks, I'd look at trading him.

If we can turn a pick 67 into a pick 20-25 when our first pick looks like being in the low 30's if we get to week 2 of the finals and a few compo picks come up, I think we should seriously consider trading him.

For me he isnt in the best 16 and is a bottom 6 in and out the side type player.

So if we keep Pittard and Trengove, does that mean we are throwing in the towel for this draft?

We won't have a pick until 30 ish in a shallow draft.

Our trade capital seems to be Young, Ah Chee, Lobbe and Amon. Even if we throw in Broadbent, Neade, Impey and a defender - Hombsch/Austin, I can't see any of these lads netting us more than a second rounder.

And we will lose Monfries, White, Toumpas and Krakeour at the very least. Whilst they haven't been influential this year, I'm not sure the roles and impact that White or Monfries had have been adequately replaced. Krak and Toump are outside depth.

So how do we correct our lack of class and pace, let alone our list's mental issues, when we are removing all of our outside depth and don't have a pick until in the 30s? Will retaining Pittard and Trengove bite us? What does our list management to date suggest about our coaches/list managers understanding of the playing group?
The draft pool this season isn't great hence why we've been linked to a few free agents, losing Jacko & Pittard to FA or landing a trade wouldn't fix our lack of decent draft picks anyway.

Hence why i'd keep both, pick up Rockliff/Motlop & possibly trade in another outside mid from another club whilst looking at moving Lobbe, Young, Ah Chee etc off for whatever we can get.
