List Mgmt. List Management 2017 -Who Stays, Who Goes?

I can't really see some of the 'tough' delisting's that people are suggesting. There are a handful of pretty certain delistings. If White/ Monfries/ Toumpas / Neade/ Krakeour don't play 10-12 games (i.e almost every game for the rest of the year) then surely they won't be resigned at their age and with the amount of games they have played over the last 2 years. Honestly, I would put a line through everyone of those. Monfries and White have been good for us but are old, injury prone, and probably not in our best 22 (Monfries might be one of the last picked, but even that is not good enough when there are young forwards stepping up). The other guys are miles off best 22 which at their age is a death sentence even if they each have talent. We have lost our 1st rounder, meaning the draft and trade isn't a valid way to replace more than 5 players. Unless we can get some quality FA's I would rather keep people like Frampton, Gray, Young, et al, rather then some spud at pick 80 that will take 3 years to be any good, assuming they even get a game. We finally have some depth so I don't see why you would gut that unless you are doing a favour to someone who wants to leave for better opportunity. I don't have any strong views about any of the rookies other than Eddy must stay. I would love to trade out Lobbe and Hartlett for a bag of chips but I don't think anyone is interested. The only other thing I would say is I don't want any 28+ FAs unless they are out and out stars (which we probably can't afford anyway).

Too early to call for every player on the list.
Even Hewitt could still save his spot - a lot stronger this year.
A few injuries and players like Krak and Toumpas could step up and impress.
Port will be making minimum changes this year.

If you look at the player contract thread, there are very few players coming out of contract in 2018. Most of those players are 'must keep', with Jake Neade the only one looking like a de-list. I assume we will be handing out quite a few one year contracts to fringe and developing players. I think players like Young, Ah Chee and Sam Gray will be offered one year contracts with the possibility of looking for new homes.

Monfries gets another year for me.

He's a 200+ game player who's still in good shape and has shown he can still push for first 22.

You dont ditch his level of experience if you dont have to. He can be called upon to play a role when needed and teach the kids a thing or two when not.

Thomas averages 1.6 goals over his career with a career high average of 2.6 and a career high season tally of 53. Neade averages 0.9 goals over his career with a career high average of 1.2 and a career high season tally of 15. Neade is probably a much better bloke than Thomas but he'd be lucky to be half the footballer.

I don't want either on our list in 2018, but we'll have at least one on our list in 2017 and I'd rather have Thomas than Neade.

The Lindsay Thomas of the past two years is not that player anymore though. The end has come rather quickly for him and would not be surprised if he retires before year is even over. Had very little impact when he was in Norths 22 before they dropped him.

I'm hoping we sell clurey at his highest price and retain austin.

I'd be fine with this. I still think our ideal defensive structure is Hombsch + one of Doogs/Austin (or Trengove, but for now he seems to be occupied elsewhere) + one of Jonas/Clurey. Jonas is a better footballer than Clurey but due to age and height Clurey would likely have a fair bit more value on the trade table. I'm not usually one to advocate trading out good players for draft picks, but if we could trade out Clurey and a later pick to get back into the first round, I could definitely live with it.

Exactly. This is what having great depth is all about - having players that can step into the top level and play a role for us.

Well other than the Hartlett bashing groupthink.

He's been paid too much relative to output. I have nothing against him personally but 500k is too much for a mid size half back flanker that can run through the midfield when we have 10 million of those.

With Austin and Doogs waiting in the wings I wouldn't be against trading Clurey, but I doubt he would attract any more than a mid to late 2nd rounder.

The potential delistees could come from Krak, Toumpas, White and Hewett, and maybe a few others, but all players have plenty of time left in this season to impress the coach and the list manager.

Re Lindsay Thomas, I expect he would come under the club's no dickheads policy, I would be absolutely amazed if we traded for him. o_O

I think Portia and Macca nailed it in the last podcast - both agreed that we would like a player 'like' Lindsay Thomas....just not Lindsay Thomas! :D

I reckon he's on level with Toumpas at the moment. No reason why Jimmy couldn't come in and have a similar output. Also being behind Houston and Broady means he's getting paid well to be a middle of the road player.

Keep
6 Angus Monfries (one year)

He has to at least play AFL level this year and stand out for that to happen. Don't reckon signing a guy who hasn't played in 2 seasons is wise from the club.

Keep
39 Justin Westhoff (multiple years)

Turns 31 this year.

Keep
41 Brendon Ah Chee (multiple years)

Played fantastic last week in China, but he'd have to really stand and perform to get that done.
23 games across 6 seasons is not good output. Wines played 24 games in his first year.

Keep
43 Dan Houston (one year)

Houston is much more deserving than a one year contract. I'd argue he's had a better, more consistent season than SPP.

Keep
46 Sam Gray (multiple years)

I can see this happening, the club are really sold on Sam Gray.

The club should be mindful that most out-of-contracts players are lifting their intent and polishing up on their on-field performances to get another contract.

I reckon reward a player's last 2-3 years as opposed to their last month of football.

Clurey is fit/ agile enough to play a general midfield/tagger/ the Hoff type role. We think we have all these options because literally no one is injured at the moment. That wont be the case forever and we will need versatile players like Clurey that can fill a variety of roles if required. With Westhoff nearing the end anyway that is an extra spot for one of those guys (or Marshall). The biggest problem we have had every year for the past 3 years is threadbare KPD's with injury/suspension and I don't want to go back to that any time soon.
