Bruest won't help with pressure, but opposition won't be able to run off him with impunity. They'd have to honour the threat.

Fisher is evasive in close but doesn't have the legspeed to be effective defensively. Not sure what the solution is there.

Responding to this one over here because it's probably a more appropriate setting than the VFL matchday thread.

It might be Cottrell as a defensive HFF. Has a knack for slipping his man and finding space in the forward 50 as well, and is a pretty reliable shot for goal.

Honey also an option. Certainly has the speed and physicality to defend, and can pounce on an opportunistic goal, but not sure he's quite worked out how to balance the offensive and defensive components of his game. Seems one or the other.

Williams could be one to look at if we like our backline mix. The more I think about this the more I think it solves some issues.

FB: Newman, Young, Marchbank
HB: Gov, Weitering, Saad
C: Walsh, Cripps, LOB/Sholl/Acres
F: TDK/Pitto, Cerra, Hewett
HF: Williams, Curnow, Durdin
FF: JSOS, McKay, Motlop
I/C: Docherty, Stocker, Kennedy, Martin
EMG: Boyd, Fisher, Setters, Cottrell

(Unlucky/Developing: Carroll, Kemp, Philp, Honey, Owies)

Gives the coaches some options on gameday.

Young - should have the ability to use him as a second centre bounce ruck with Weiters/Marchy/Gov holding down the fort for short periods.
Gov - start down back, can swing him forward.
Walsh - start on a wing, plenty of time on-ball.
Williams - start on the half forward flank, can push into the middle or rotate to HB for some extra run and carry.
JSOS - let him take some forward 50 bounces, but otherwise only a break glass ruck option.

The bench has two blokes who could be utilised as defensive and midfield rotations (Doc, Stocker) and two who could be used as forward and midfield rotations (Kennedy, Martin).

Fisher gets pushed out on the assumption that Williams on that flank can perform the role with a good deal more physicality, without giving up any pace.

Cottrell gets pushed out on the assumption that some combination of Walsh, Doc and Cerra can cover the defensive wing between them.

Both would feature in my choice of emergencies, along with Boyd and Setters, though it might be necessary to have at least one tall in the group.

The only external personnel change from 2022 would be the wing position if one or both of Acres/Sholl are recruited (seems likely we get at least one). Beyond that, I reckon we may have what we need if we deploy it properly and can keep the majority of players on the park.

I agree with you 100% Palle_blu except the club pushing the agenda. Although not outside the realms of possibility, I believe they would first talk to Dow direct rather than starting rumours in the media.

Agreed - it was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek addition there, I seriously doubt Murphy would be acting as a club mouthpiece on something like this. He's simply moved into a media gig and is doing what he's being paid to do, same as the vast majority of AFL players who make the move once they're on-field days come to a close.

Stocker needs to lose about 4kgs of puppy fat. He'd move far far better and his agility isn't fantastic as it is. Would do him a lot of good if Voss is keen to keep him around. Petracca used to be the same, built like an ox but he's a hell of a lot more nimble now and has more to his game than just out muscling players.
this x 100

If (and it's a big if) he does get super fit, he'll go from being potentially good to outstanding

Reckon there's an element of Murph speaking from his own personal lament here??
Nah, I think Murph spent time with him & has a pretty good idea of his game & wants to see him succeed. He was around for long time and can see the writing on the wall, & what will happen if he sticks around.

I wasn't seeing that from Docherty this season, as when he went on long sprints he too often looked all arms and legs, especially when running forward. Maybe it's age, maybe it's the knee, maybe it's the physical toll of the chemo catching up with him when he really pushes his body, but it just wasn't there.

Docherty in his AA form? You're right, no question.

Reduce the strength training, maybe a slight caloric reduction, but the training focus has to become about a more economical running technique when he needs to track to positions on the ground rather than his technique for ballistic sprints. I agree, he is too big to be a running defender, and I'd still want a mobility shift from him if he went into the middle. Suspect that while he might look lean, there might be some central adiposity that's proving tough to move.

Conditioning work on the related muscles to support the joints in doing so. Right now when he's jogging to position it just looks very pronounced and emphasised, like a horse trot in an equestrian event, not someone who knows how to pace themselves through a game. Focusing on integrated agility training would help too.

I actually wanted Starcevich in his draft year, but he shot up the charts late and almost went top 20.

Just curious, is there anyone that you didn't want in their draft year? Besides the obvious ones we did draft of course

LOL. I have preferences. I was very happy with Charlie, Weitering, McKay.

I was happy for Walsh to be the first player picked, I just thought if Gold Coast were offering us 2 & 3 - and presumably a little something else from us - that we should have explored it.

I felt McCluggage was the best player in his draft, and that's largely held up.

I appreciate your effort in trying to explain what you were trying to say but I couldn’t read beyond your first paragraph.

It IS as simple as calories in calories out for weight loss and weight gain. You cannot defy the laws of thermodynamics. I’m not sure what black magic you think the endocrine system can produce but it certainly cannot break the laws of thermodynamics. Yes, every human has different caloric needs and the endocrine system has some responsibility in defining these but inevitably weight loss and weight gain is entirely attributed to your energy balance. I.e. calories in versus calories out

Marc Murphy advises Paddy Dow to seek another club- I like it

Such a backhander by Murphy.....

"Murphy said interested clubs could easily plug Dow into their salary cap without issue.

“You don’t have to overpay him, I wouldn’t have thought,” he said."

Hope Paddy proves him wrong and improves at Carlton to be a premiership player.

I don’t. I reckon he looks heavy though. Don’t you?
No I don't, same as I think the likes of Maynard doesn't need to drop weight to be effective

Putting in an uninterrupted preseason is the best starting point for Stocker

The commentary from Murphy re Dow seems to make perfect sense.
lt seems a positive move for Dow to explore new opportunities, he has only played 2 games on the back of consistently good form in the Reserves.

Hopefully a Richmond or Geelong will give him that opportunity and he takes it.

Stocker's closer to an NRL build than an AFL one. Hard to know if he's hitting the running targets the club are setting for him, but the program might need a tweak. Thought he'd really come on this year, but probably didn't get a lot of opportunities in the senior side.

Really, that’s your take? I’d think that’s actually pretty accurate, he wouldn’t be demanding dollars at all just a couple years and game time to prove/show he’s got it & the next contract would be for something more substantial

Agree, only way a club will take down is if they can trade a throw away pick and pay bare minimum dollars

I think Murphy's advice is exactly what anyone should be telling him. Try somewhere new, not really working at carlton.

Also depends if there is another club willing to trade for him. I reckon they'd be a couple but only on their terms.

Only thing dow may want is an extra year on his contract
