Without Hugh Jackson, we literally had no mid depth in the Maggie's. McEntee not worth a burnt crumpet.
Don’t think that’ll be an issue this year, Hugh injury free, Watkins, McIntee, Mead, Atkins, Charleson and Moreas on the wings (assuming Lorenz in the Ones)

And now Cochrane as well
He won’t be an AFL midfielder, not big enough, not quick enough, skills aren’t up to scratch. Better off playing him High Half Forward or Back Pocket. Could be a Michael Wilson, won’t be an AFL mid though, ever!

You listed a group of players that included McEntee for SANFL midfield depth.
Thats why I mentioned Cochrane as such for SANFL not AFL.

Just think a good opportunity to invest in a skill/position as an 18 year old where he may play AFL Footy, I feel it pointless he become another McIntee where he is best suited to a midfield role but played out of position at the next level.

I see Starcevic to Wilson as a player to best model himself on.

“He shows great ability to take on feedback and implement it quickly into his game, and he has a natural ability to put himself into strong positions and is good in the contest,” Port’s head of SANFL Paul Stewart said. “His ground level defensive mentality is at a great level already for a young player and he sets up the ground well offensively.

I thought Rome was a good chance to be drafted, I liked the way he played in his guest role at Port. They must be looking for more.

We can nominate him next year if he shows enough.

I liked Louie too, but he could be pigeon-holed in the one position whereas Rome might be seen as more versatile.

Any other year the kids probably joined on the rookie list. Pretty stiff to fall on a year we only took on 5 players. Fingers crossed he has a big year.
Is it possible to nominate him as a FS in a few years time? I ask because the reality is:

1. Even if we gave him a list spot for 2025 the chances of him playing AFL were negligible- as a half back he was behind Bergman, Farrell, Jones, Evans, Sinn, his brother, DBJ, Williams, Burton, Atkins. So no advantage in developing him on our AFL list over developing him on our SANFL list.
2. Some very compromised drafts are coming up- 2025 has half the top 30 already assigned to FS and academy picks. 2026 and 2027 are bound to be for the benefit of Tasmania only. We will be looking at players outside the normal underage programs to fill our list.
3. By 2026/7 he will be physically developed, some of the players listed in (1) above will be gone to other teams, retired or moved into the midfield- that is when we may need him. And he will be used to playing to Josh Carr's new system.

In other words, why bother drafting a player in 2024 with no prospects of an AFL debut until, say 2027, when you can develop him as you want and be guaranteed to have him in 2027?

I like what the club has done.

Logan showed the club that he wanted it with great training and then playing in the team.

Lets see if Rome wants to put the work in and get a spot in the MSD.
No point getting him in the MSD to be our 11th half back. If he has a good year we get him as F/S in a compromised draft. Watkins and McLellan or an emergency Tall Back would be the targets in the MSD.

We are actually a bit down on half backs. First time for everything.

I like Farrell, Jones, Evans and Sinn
I'm not as big of a fan of Burton and Williams.
Burgoyne can play back there.

Happy to grab him if he excels training down at the club.

Key Position Defender is a bit of a worry though.

I have been wondering about this. What is the actual rule, can he be father son selected next year. My initial thought was that maybe as we passed up the option this year that the option was forfeited.

You are always father-son eligible. Geoff Parker mentioned it in his post-draft interview. They may nominate any of Rome, Louie and Oliver next year depending on form this year.

oooohhhhhhhhh boyyyyyyyyy

Cheltenham young gun Josh Lai training with Port Adelaide in hope of landing SSP spot

No Coates League? No VFL? No worries. A 19-year-old with just 12 games of senior football under his belt in Melbourne has been invited to train with Port Adelaide for a spot on its list.

Fractured bone in his foot kept him out most of the year. Doesn't hurt to have a look at him.

How many spots do we have to fill at the Magpies?
