If he's part of our best then I say we play him - understand the need for younger players to get a game so that they don't start considering options from other clubs, but we're in the premiership window and we need to play our best as often as we can - opportunities will arise through management of older players, loss of form, or lack of fitness, and that's the time to introduce new blood into the side - we need to keep our eye on the prize - our focus needs to be another premiership - we'll be less than competitive soon enough and that's the time push the younger players earlier than they may be ready,

Great , now it really begins. Very happy to see we have rested 9 automatic selections for round 1. Gives a shot for all those possibles to put their best foot forward. There is a lot of them and I would suggest a strong performance tomorrow will count more than the rest of the pre season. A few of them will get through to the Richmond match which will be more a full team. Really interested in what Tew and Sullivan bring and who of Finn, Allen , Reef etc can put themselves forward as really pushing for that senior spot.

Always thought is was strange to have a short turnaround between these two matches - can't see the sense in it given the dates would have been flexible!

Interesting to hear what you expect to get out of this. From our side we have quality in LDU and Wardlaw in the middle, and bits and pieces around the ground but very little experience and a totally disrupted backline. We have been practicising a run-and-gun style which might look good here and there, but could fall apart under pressure and will almost certainly present opportunities for you to open us up on the turnover/rebound many times. We've added a lot of running power, in Stephens, McKercher and expecting significant improvement from Lazarro, Powell and maybe Philips, plus Sheezel and Shiels from last year so we would hope to run out the game better than we have in the past.
Our talls are a worry, with a couple of bandaids at the back end and not much faith that CCJ can do more than get in Larkey's way at the front. Our more exciting young mid-forwards like Ford and George will be missing and Curtis is coming from a layoff so a lot will be left to a slimmed-down Zurhaar.
A win for us would be to put together a few exciting end to end passages, some highlights from the young guns, not get bogged down in the back half and limit the scoreboard damage from the inevitable.

Mitch fitness and no injuries is about all we can really want from this one I would've thought, especially with the game next week and Opening around only a couple of weeks away.

Will be good to see how the likes of Dean go against AFL opposition. Few players also still trying to stake their claim ala Macrae.

Not expecting too much out of the really young lads whom are unlikely to feature too much this year; TJ etc.
 
That team is basically what I wanted. Give our older premiership stars a week off and bring them in for the round 1 dress rehearsal next week while the younger ones can play a half or so supporting the untested types. Get a good look at Macrae against LDU and some of north's high pick mids after his dominant intra club performance. Get a look at HH, Ryan, Dean, Allan, Bytel, Sullivan. Also get a look at our star recruit Schultz.

I reckon we're more likely to go the other way at the moment.
