Both Craig and Sando wanted deep entries. It's a lot harder to find space the deeper you go. Not many guys can't make the distance kicking over a guy standing the mark at 40m. Why not use the space and trust your fwds?

Another example of how mediocre Sando was. He wanted deep entries into the forward line because he didn't trust our goal kicking accuracy. As you say, this creates issues when opposition teams flood back and congest the area. Our forward structure was terrible during those years. The mark of an average coach is when their solution to a problem is to create new problems.

Bump.

He has his fair share of critics on here, but he's had an undeniably promising season. His hands are exquisite, and for a young mid he's incredibly strong. His disposal still isn't great but it's gradually improving.

21 years old. 27.2 touches per game. 5 clearances. And he's still got a rubbish tank. He's gonna be a beast for a long time.

Matt Crouch seems to have become our most consistent player each week.

This, in my opinion, is both a good thing and a bad thing.

The good thing, of course, is that Crouch has been able to find that consistency that most players strive for on a personal level, which is impressive for a young player.

The bad thing, in my opinion, is that whilst he is no doubt a valuable player due to his ability to find the ball, M Crouch just seems to lack that bit of class that would make him that much more damaging as a player. For him to be pretty much our best player week in, week out is almost an indictment on our desperate need for an injection of class to our midfield.

He is getting better all the time. Yes he needs to work on his disposal but after only 3 seasons in the AFL he is a pretty awesome recruit.
Does he though?

72.5% DE is pretty good for an inside mid. I'd say he needs to work on kicking more and not just handballing it off

Where's da Wabbit??

Young midfielder Matt Crouch broke protégé Scott Thompson’s record for handballs in a season. The youngest Crouch sibling fired off 359 handballs – seven more than Thompson (352) in 2009.

At 21 years of age, Crouch became the youngest and just the 10th Crow to amass in excess of 600 possessionsin a single season. Thompson, who chalked up an incredible 737 possessions in 25 games in 2012, holds the Club record.

Club Champion and All-Australian vice-captain Rory Sloane broke his own tackling record. Sloane laid 163 tackles (ranked third in the AFL at the end of the home and away season) in 2016, surpassing his previous-best effort of 147 in 2014. Thompson applied 158 tackles in 22 matches this season to move into second spot.

Thommo was good for a few goals, Matt hasn't quite got there yet.
He banged a few through later in the season from the tightest of stoppage situations which has been super handy. There will be only more to come as he keeps working on that tank and taking over from Thommo.

This kid has more areas of improvement and that should be exciting for Crows fans.

His improvement this year has been significnat both in terms of his fitness, his spread from stoppage and his work inside.

Areas where I think he still has some improvement in are
- while his tank has improved a lot there is another level or two to go there
- similarly his spread from stoppage has improved a lot but it can get a lot better
- improve his kicking efficiency
- start kicking on his right foot a bit so that he is not strictly one sided. Same applies to Atkins
- be more damaging with his disposals. Less handballs and more kicking.
- while very good at clearances, I think he has another level to go. I think he could be one of those players where he gets 5 clearances on a bad day.
- he has packed on some serious size since he was drafted but I would like to see him get a bit stronger and become that real bull inside a contest.
- lay more tackles especially as an inside midfielder. His brother's tackling is fantastic.
- start adding more strings to his bow. With the rotation cap and the need for players to be able to play multiple positions he needs to be able to be more damaging on the scoreboard. He has kicked an odd goals here and there especially later in the season but would be very handy if he can do it on more consistent basis. Same goes for hsi brother.

Overall for a player in his 3rd season, he is already established as one of the best young midfielders in the game and crucial part of our team. Matty has had himself a mighty fine season.

He can actually take a mark. A few times he got given hospital balls this season (as is our way) with the defender given a freebie spoil but he unexpectedly clunked the mark with strong hands. Would like to see him use this advantage, push forward occasionally

That's the strange thing with Matt in the U18's for the Rebels and earlier on for the Beaufort Crow's juniors he was particularly dangerous around goals when resting forward he showed innate goal sense often snapping freakish goals from inside packs etc....maybe he's been instructed not to venture too far forward with his until now limited tank??

Doesn't he do this now? IIRC he's snapped a fair few of his goals from pack situations

I think your being a bit kind there mate, a fair few??

But I've seen it plenty at junior level, he just seems to have the ability around goals to get the ball to boot quickly in congestion and more often than not goal.
