Matt Scharenberg v James Aish 2 years on

I'm certainly happy with Scharenberg despite not playing a senior game. Long term it will say off we just need to be patient. On the other hand I think Freeman is a bust. Serious soft tissue injuries do not bode well for him.

Agree - Freeman’s Hammy has all but Turned into a 2 Year Injury. Another Roach?

With 20/20 hindisght we could have had Pavlich, Hird etc etc - these are pointless discussions.
I disagree that it's pointless discussion. How can posters truly respond to the theme of the thread if unable to comment on who we could have drafted if we hadn't opted for 2 long term invalids.

I don't have such a problem with Scharenberg, though we did know that his toes needed to be amputated and that this would involve a period of rehabilitation. However Freeman never struck me as an inspired selection with McCarthy the next best tall forward in the draft seeming a better choice. If we had our time again, I suspect that we might have picked 2 completely different players.

The benefit of hindsight is a luxury not afforded us at the time, but we do have it now. If I were Hine knowing what we do now, Aish or Cripps and McCarthy would have been better pick ups.

At the time Scharenberg was 100% the right pick, and I probably would still take him over Aish

Freeman on the other hand... a few others like Cripps or McCarthy could seen us in a much better position at the moment

The injuries to Shaz and Freeman are such major blows to the planned 2016/17/18 flag tilt. If they had not been injured, both would have been reaching the 50 game mark as established young AFL stars by mid 2016. Instead, they'll be likely be debuting or playing their 10th game. That's two top shelf established players we won't have, which in most cases would be enough to separate a team that makes it to the final four from one that gets knocked out in the semis.

I'm not saying its hopeless, but Freeman's hamstring and Shaz's knee has at best forced a delay to when this build might reach its peak and possibly noticeably lowered the whole group's potential peak.

Sigh, this post ended up being much more negative/depressing than I had planned.

Give the kid a break.
We lucky that he is even playing atm, considering it's not even a year since he had his knee recon.
Let him regain some confidence in his knee and judge him them.
Aish hasn't exactly set the world on fire.
He's been playing footy in the Lions reserve side, and the only reason we keep hearing his name is because he apparently wants out of Brisbane.
I'll back Hines judgement on this one.
Any kid that was touted as being the best school footballer since Wayne Carey has my tick of approval.

Maybe Aish is edging himself out of the best 22 as a means of devaluing his worth and easing his transit to the Pies. Once at our club, he will flourish, becoming the player we dreamed he would be after watching his draft highlights reel.

Maybe Scharenberg has the same motive behind him seeming to hang back from the physical impact to slip beneath the radar back home?

Very hard to make the call based on what I have seen so far. Scharenberg and Freeman. It is very frustrating that neither have played a senior game. Freeman was tearing it up preseason...the only thing he is tearing up now is his hammy!!

Bit harsh judging a lad who's gone through an ACL ...

... What's to say that an alternate Collingwood pick 6 wouldn't have done their ACL? All the more so if you're one of the #sackDaveron brigade.

There's every chance Scharenberg will be a gun player for us. That's consistent with what folks have been saying all along - starting with Hine and Pendlebury

Freeman adds Pace when he is 100% and that is something that our Midfield lacks

2 years ago we made the right decision on Shazz i still think we had some better options to look at then Freeman but he did feel a need that was speed and endurance

Right now this draft looks like a disaster

Being as objective as possible it has been disappointing so far. My biggest concern is the lost development these 2 have endured while their peers have benefited from the experience and confidence that comes from being senior AFL players. Hard to quantify but I have no doubt it is important. At this point in time if we did the draft again no way would pick 6 and 10 be used on Shaz and Freeman.

My other concern is how tentative and uninvolved Shaz looks at VFL level. I know confidence is involved but I would like to be seeing some inkling of the things that made him such a highly rated player in the draft. I will say I missed the last couple of games. There is time for this to change but the big question is will it.

Looks like Aish played pretty well today. I think the best case scenario is that we get Aish in the off season for a song from the Bears and have both in our team in years to come.

If we get Treloar (who sounds like he killed it today vs the Cats) and Aish in during the off season without selling the farm, that would do nicely.

This. Hope Scharenberg stays and gets over his injuries. Picking Freeman over McCarthy is just stupidity on our behalf. The recruiters have rock in their heads.
Do you have a post in your history where you claimed this immediately after the draft? Otherwise it just sounds like a convenient re writing of history. No one can makes claims about it being a wrong choice to pick Freeman because he has never had a chance to display his ability yet. His injury couldn't have been predicted.

This is all true, Freeman was quite the prospect as a junior, considered if not the best athlete, right up there, as well as being a quality player.

If he had a history of hammy injuries as a junior then you could make a strong case that we stuffed that pick up royally, as far as I know he didn't, and we just got unlucky.
