You sure about that?
They need to classify all flags by Malbun clubs as VFL & AFL.

If non Vic clubs can't include State League flags in their totals eg Port, then neither should Melbourne clubs.

Well, we are the only non Vic club who has a State League background prior to the AFL being established as it happens 😀

So Wobblers are 13 VFL + 3 AFL or whatever it is.
Port are 37 SANFL + 1 AFL.
Geelong are 5 VFL + 4 AFL.
etc etc etc

Trouble with including state league premierships is the only club to have them from a non vfl state league is, you guessed it.......The Port Adelaide Football Club. There will be no weight to include it from any other club.

At least the Vic clubs had to beat others still in AFL whereas port had to beat no one

According to the Victorian biased media Collingwood have now won 16 AFL Premierships since 1990. As Carlton and Essendon are also credited with 16 AFL Premierships that makes a collective total of 48 Premierships in 34 seasons since the AFL was formed some feat that.

I find it really ******* annoying that Victorian Clubs can take their pre AFL history with them into the AFL but the PAFC cannot.

The earliest I can go for a national AFL is 1982. From 1877 to 1971, the main league in Victoria was restricted to Victoria. Thus, it was a state league, and should be counted as such.

From 1888 to 1976, the national champion came from the Championship of Australia and the first NFL Championship.

I’ve put your post in Google Translator:

B*llsh*t (detected) -> English

At least the Vic clubs had to beat Vic clubs (thus, national premiers), whereas Port is not Victorian (therefore, it doesn’t count).

On a serious note as a club that has 7 VFA premierships which are not counted you guys should find the system as stupid as Port fans do.

And to be fair, most knowledgeable Geelong fans do.

Read if for yourself...

The bit you want is,

1990
VFL renamed the AFL, Adelaide FC formed (joined AFL competition 1991)

The only difference the AFL, and the rest of Victoria for that matter, sees between the old VFL and the current AFL is in the name.

Collingwood has won 3 Premierships in the AFL era the rest were won in the VFL. Even Collingwood would find it hard to win a Premiership in a league that didn't exist.

It should be like cricket. VFL, SANFL, WAFL up to ~1990 and AFL post 1990 are first class games, period.

Collingwood has won 16 first class premierships.
Port Adelaide has won 37 first class premierships (or however many we'd won up to 1990 + AFL. Plus 4x champs of australia if you want to be cheeky).

Other benefits of this system:
  • greats like craig bradley magically join the 400 club
  • 100 goal seasons and 1000 goal careers recognised across country, rather than just the vics

Oh no! How can you possibly compare AFL vs WAFL vs SANFL records? The same way you compare Sheild v County cricket ya ****wits!

Oh no, Nathan Buckley hasn't won any first class premierships at all ;)

I love how the media is now blaming Melbourne for the Clayton Oliver beat up they all piled onto.

FFS 7 news retweeted a fake Tom Browne account and the real one works for them! Probably where Theo Dropkick sourced his story.

What is your actual point? That the VFL didn't rename itself to the AFL?

The point is the Victorian media are telling us that Collingwood have won 16 AFL Premierships and that Carlton have won a similar number. That isn't possible as the AFL only started up in 1990. Collingwood have won 3 AFL Premierships and the remainder were won in the VFL.

While the former VFL clubs get to bask in past glory Port get treated like we did not exist prior to 1997. That is the reason we have 1870 on the back of our guernsey. Shortly after we joined the AFL in 1997 a lot of officially approved AFL merchandise appeared with 'Port Adelaide est1997' on it.

It was weirder than that - they had us established 1996. Wtf? Just picked a random year in the 90s. Then the afl went and fined us for paying players to stand out of the 1995 draft. How did we do that if we didnt't exist yet?

The VFL renamed as the AFL. It's not that hard to understand.

The name change is not that important. The league was merely recognizing its new status.

The question is WHEN the status changed. I have said this above:
The earliest I can go for a national AFL is 1982. From 1877 to 1971, the main league in Victoria was restricted to Victoria. Thus, it was a state league, and should be counted as such.

From 1888 to 1976, the national champion came from the Championship of Australia and the first NFL Championship.

Another mark would be 1987, with the expansion to WA and Qld. In 1990, nothing substantial happens.

The status of the league has changed to "national" either in 1987 or 1982. It cannot be any earlier.

---

Regarding state premierships, the AFL is also unfair. Thus, the AFL commits TWO mistakes.

Not only the AFL adds state premierships to an alledgedly national tally, but, while doing that, it doesn't add all Victorian state premierships. It simply ignores the pre-VFL era.

There should be no discussion that the Victorian state premierships should go from 1877 to 1981.

1877-1896: VFA Premiers (neglegted by the AFL)
1897-1981: VFL Premiers

---

Between 1982 and 1986, the VFL was no longer restricted to state borders, but it covered only 2 states. Thus, what the league was then is up to debate.

This debate also helps with the recognition of national titles prior to the VFL's relocations and expansions. The main questions on it would be:

Can a state league reach beyond state borders?
Can a national competition be restricted to 2 states?
Does it matter which 2 states it covers?
If it's neither state nor national, what would such a multi-state tournament be?
Can a national competition ignore the country's main state in the sport?

  • greats like craig bradley magically join the 400 club
Craig Bradley hits 500 games if you take a true "first class games" approach.

And he's the games record holder.

Mind you that includes 9 International Games for Australia.Which maybe a little questionable. State of Origin should 100% be included.
