how are they trying to force him to be a prodigy? he plays his role. no one is out there actively talking him up as anything. his build, his youth, and his spin bowling... what else is there to select a player on?

Because he’s just turned 21 and was the third in line spinner for his county when they picked him and still has a county average in the 50s

That’s the sort of selection that you usually see when someone has some sort of talent that is reserved for a kid that has just been blitzing all other levels of cricket and they just bypass everything.

Everything England are doing seems geared toward the ashes and to me it looks like it’s working, even plucking bethel from nowhere. But if bashir is picked over leach (assuming leach is fit) I think they have rocks in their head

From memory Leach struggled to take wickets on England's last Ashes tour here so I don't think he is the answer for them either.

Look possibly not but he would offer more control. Whoever they pick isn’t going to be the one that wins them the Ashes, let’s be honest. What you would be happy with is someone who keeps things tight and can chip in with 10–12 wickets for the series

Bold prediction, Root will finish with the best average out of the four.

And that average will be just above or just below 50 because he's continually dipping down below then having purple patches of massive scores to drag him back over.

His average has to go up significantly for that to happen. Kane has played over 100 tests, he’s 34 and NZ don’t play that much test cricket so it means less chance for his average to actually drop.

And his last 4 years have seen him average no less than 57.
Even as good as Root has been this year - and he has been - his average has been exactly the same as Williamson’s: 57.

Smith has 2 runs on Williamson at 56. Australia play more test cricket than the Kiwis so it’s conceivable that Kane goes past him but his overall average doesn’t really give a full indication relative to where the pair have made their runs; smith has literally gotten it done everywhere against everyone. Kane hasn’t quite done that.

Root is undoubtedly a great player and literally the ONLY thing missing is a hundred in Australia (and even then he’s made a dozen or so 50s) but he’s pushing shit uphill now to catch their averages

I know, that's why I called it a bold prediction. Will probably get it wrong because Williamson is so good and Aus will probably beach Smith like they did Voges.

A bit surprised that Stokes chose to bowl first as the pitch looks pretty good for batting, it is cloudy but that might not last long.

Just the one change for England with Potts replacing Woakes while NZ have brought in Young and Santner for Conway and Smith.

NZ can't win this series now but it would still be nice to get a win here to avoid a clean sweep and send Southee off with a win.

Another good start for Young where he didn't go on with it, a good ball from Atkinson though, it moved enough to catch the edge.

I would still take a 42 from Young batting through the first session than Conway playing a scratchy knock and getting out early on.

Latham dropped by Duckett twice now, not easy chances but they could be costly with Latham going past 50.

He needs to make England pay with a hundred but I doubt that he does given his record of not converting fifties into tons.
