21 November 2019 - sliding doors moment for Ryan Abbott & Lachie Henderson

Having been delisted by Geelong with the promise of being picked up in the rookie draft, Abbott instead decides to accept a 1-year contract with St Kilda - that move opens the door for Henderson who had also been delisted by Geelong to instead be picked up on the rookie list

Fast forward 11 months - Henderson looks a lock in Geelong's defensive unit, will likely be lining up in a preliminary final in 6 days and potentially earned himself another year on the list. And that came about after our 2 rucks both went down injured and the shifting of Mr Fix-It (Blicavs) from defender to his new ruck/wing role, opening a spot in defence for Henderson; a spot that may have in fact been filled by Abbott with him stepping in to ruck duties while Blicavs stays back

Meanwhile as we've learnt this afternoon, Abbott is one of 5 who have been delisted from St Kilda:

ST KILDA has wasted little time announcing its delistings after the club's season ended in a semi-final loss to reigning premier Richmond on Friday night.

Doulton Langlands, Ryan Abbott, Jack Bell, Jack Mayo and Logan Austin won't receive new contracts at the Saints for 2021.

Yikes the tiggies are a bit on edge at the moment. In the Port/Tigers match day thread, one of the tiger fans said "was hoping this match would be the Grand Final to see a big Vic club vs a big SA club, and I said still a good chance we get a big Vic club vs big SA club Grand Final.

That did not go down well with the #teflontigers.

You’re always offended aren’t you. Cats are a medium club in Vic compared to Pies, Tiges and Hawks. Might be time to fry the chip on your shoulder. But congrats to Geelong on making the prelim.

Eeeeep.

Anyone else find it mildly amusing how Grimes who has rightfully gained a reputation for diving at the slightest contact is the one player from Punt Road who has been fronting the media saying he can't see the issue with Richmond players playing on the edge? If he was on the receiving end of similar tactics he'd be flopping around like a fish out of water.

I really like Grimes. He's a champion player and seems like such a nice guy. That's why I find it so weird that he dives. He doesnt need to, he beats his opponent more times than not.

Everyone plays each other once. Geelong have to go to Perth to play the Eagles this year. Next year it switches and they come to us. An even comp...who would have thunk it.

It's a fantasy so may as well say with this that means State of Origin could come back.

Thought I'd quote here so I don't clutter the preview thread

If there was a commitment to returning a State of Origin Carnival weekend and a return to a NAB Cup-style pre-season competition, I'd be all for a 17 game season. As it stands a 17-game season with two practice matches just doesn't seem enough, but a proper pre-season and a SoO Carnival would really flesh out the season well

I'd take two 'season breaks' as well, one between Rounds 6 and 7 (for SoO) and another between Rounds 13 and 14 (as a business end freshen up). That takes away those three slow weeks when there's hardly any matches on and replaces them with just one week with no footy (call it local footy weekend, free entry for AFL club members to their local teams match?)
