Turn it up.

Then goes leave me alone I'm only a kid when he was upset.

Boo hoo... it wasnt aggressive, it was funny. Ken was having a crack at him with a smile.

It's funny how it went down. YOu know when Ken started to give it to Ginnivan, all he had to do was to go up to Ken, laugh and shake his hand. It would have all been washed away, as taht is how we did things in different generations. But instead, Ginny does his arrogant social media thing and then when he has the opportunity to be confident or play it down in person, he does nothing, he looks scared and then Sicily has to be aggressive. So the whole thing escalated because this younger generation just doesnt know how to interact correctly.

I think the problem here is generational.

Ken is from the "give it and get it back" generation.

Ginni is from the generation that seeks praise, and to be fair, his "see you in 14 days" thing was just him seeing things from his perspective - Port didn't enter his thinking, why would it. I don't think he was baiting Port or Ken, it just didn't enter consideration because he is heavily focussed on himself.
Great post.

Yeah I think that's the case. Ginnivan sees it as razzing up Grundy in an "casual banter between mates" way. I'm sure Grundy actually laughed, if only at the bravado.

But with Port and Ken under pressure, along with the AFL media whipping up a storm, it gets embraced as a personal slight (which I doubt Ginnivan even has the capability to consider) and all of a sudden it's as if he's told Port Adelaide and half the AFL that he wants to do unspeakable things to their pet hamster.

I don't think it's a "seek praise" thing though, I'm sure Ginnivan would happily take/expect banter back from Grundy, but was probably a bit blindsided by the circus (and therefore Ken's response).

"It's just bantz, Ken. Why are you triggered?"

- Ginnivan, probably

Hawthorn were early adopters of "new" inclusive culture and as much as I hate to admit it, it works for them.

We're getting players coming through who have been affected by covid lockdowns and spend stacks of time connected to the web, posting off-handed comments and content to social media.
Calling them "socially stunted" isn't the right way to put it, so maybe "socialised differently".

The Hawks culture seems to work for that generation.

And I think you've identified the point of friction there - Port aren't like that.

Clubs that refuse to engage with "new" culture will either be left behind or forced to find other cultural norms that get the best out of kids coming through.

I think Geelong seems to have its finger on the pulse (but also a wide age spread) and always looks to adapt.

But I can see "old fashioned" clubs like Port and Adelaide struggling to get cohesion and buy-in from young guys coming through.

Even recent examples

Adelaide's relentless hammering Rachele in public for his bantering with Port fans was the exact wrong way to go.

Melbourne effectively abandoning Petracca post serious injury was the wrong way to go.

Geelong's embracing of Stengle's uh... misadventure...was the right way to go.

It's going to be interesting times ahead. The "fix ya culture" line is a bit of joke, but at the same time now as always, it's the difference between going alright and being at the top.

As much as nobody wants to think about it, Hawthorn will be back real soon.

So disappointing to see those who can’t revel in Hawfie failure in this precious moment.

People who take pleasure in a Hawthorn loss, absolutely disgust me.

If Ken really needed to heal his bruised ego, be coud have done it in the presser:

"Oh yeah look it was a tough game, but we're looking forward to flying to Sydney next week. And look if there are any Hawks players who want to catch up with Brodie Grundy in their off-season I'm happy to book you a seat next to me" with a wry smile or whatever.

It gets the message across, would have been funny, Kenny looks like a boss, and makes Ginnivan look like a dill. Probably doesn't cost Kenny boy $10k either.

Anyway, l'esprit de l'escalier and all that.

I'll be excommunicated, I know, but I I've almost moved past hating Hawthorn when Geelong aren't directly competing with them.

The tiring years of Richmond bullshit made me realize the Hawks were pretty much our only true rival and (forgive me) our equal - so it's a weird sort of respect I have for them when they're not playing us.

They're definitely a level above the rest of the riff raff.

Sic started it .

Both should have said anything .
That was my take.

Sicily was still pissed about missing the crucial shot and was looking for a fight to pick.

Made it all about himself when he should have been acknowledging a team mate’s milestone.

No leadership at all.

Ugh I hate it but it's true. They are going to win premierships in the next decade, and that just sucks.

I'm not as big on them as everyone else. They will cop the harder fixture next year. Teams will put serious work into breaking down their system. Half their team are limited players red lining on a wave of momentum.

Woke up from a wonderful dream that James Sicily hit the post, Hawthorn lost, and then Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis, and Sam Mitchell had a moan, a cry, and a whinge after the game finished in response to Geelong legend Ken Hinkley Hoking all over Ginnivan.

I've never slept so well ❤️🤪😄

I'm surprised at people think that what can be construed as workplace bullying is warranted.

Power dynamics exist and affect how these things work. Senior leaders in the AFL shouldn't be targeting players - let alone young players.

Doesn't matter that it's Hawthorn or that it's Ginnivan specifically - Ken knows he ****ed up and the AFL will almost certainly see it the same way.

Same as Kingsley making contact with Papley last week. It's just not on.
Workplace bullying?

Give me a break

Sicily's Ginnivan's team leader, Mitchell is their manager but he's fairly new to the management game.

Hinkley's the manager of another department who's been with the organisation for 40 years and has decided to go after a fairly new hire because he took offence to some banter between the newish hire and one of his former colleagues in another department altogether.
Let it go with the bullying analogy.

Bullying involves repeated instances of causing distress to someone with less power than you.

Unless Kenny has been doing it repeatedly it is not bullying.

Someone eventually was going to call ginnivan on his bs, I respect Kenny for being the one to do so.

Could he have used a bit of subtlety? Maybe, but let’s not make ginnivan a victim here.

Yep. Just one straight(er) kick off a prelim.

People here will shitcan the smack-talk culture, but it resonates with his players.
Let’s not pretend that hawthorn were gallant in defeat.

Port were average and undermanned. Hawthorn were worse, and their biggest shittalkers didn’t turn up when the heat was on.

Hawthorn just fumbled away a massive opportunity. And they know it.
