Opinion North Melbourne Priority Picks Part 2 - 2023/2024

Here's a link to an article from the Age referencing it. I think the actual quote I'm referring to was from Dillon on Gettable, or something.

So effectively, clubs losing FA's appear to have been over-compensated due to the AFL putting last year's offers under the old CBA, despite those same players getting contracts under the new one.

Okay but you made it sound like that was a special case for McKay, when in reality it's just a quirk of timing that applied to all FAs last year.

North can go and grab the next Ryley Bonner DFA like the Saints did to shore up their leaking defense. Draft picks and 18 year olds wont change anything for another 2 to 3 years. Go and bring in some role playing defensive mids who run both ways.

Problem is North are in a cycle of pushing out experience and throwing top rated kids in too early. Will they even play experienced role players ahead of fast tracking the gun kids?
Dunno man, when you're at the bottom, the experienced players you tend to get are duds or way beyond their best. And you have to either pay them more or give them longer contracts to entice them over. Here's a post I found (not one of mine, for the record) from August last year that explains it (it's in the context of chasing Dylan Stephens, who has, um, not been great, to put it politely).

We're not contending for finals this year, so having Darcy Tucker getting 15 touches a game instead of giving Riley Hardeman experience ends up being counter-productive. Bringing in a 32-year-old Jarryd Lyons for a year or two, as someone has suggested this week, takes games away from Colby McKercher, and actually slows the rebuild, rather than helping it.

It's going to be the Sheezels and Wardlaws and Duursmas and McKerchers and Hardemans that are the core of the side in two or three years time, so the quicker they get games under their belt, the better.

Totally understand that. And if this is the attitude of North and its fans then fine.

But don't ask for more assistance. Take the pain and play the kids and hopefully things will turn.

If the club chooses to play kids before they are ready ahead of older guys who can compete for longer then that's ok, the losses and blow outs will continue. And if not managed well kids will get disheartened and look elsewhere for success.

It's a very fine line and balancing act.

I don't think we will ask for more assistance. I think the AFL would be within their rights to say no, even if we did ask, too. We've got a bucketload of kids with potential, it's now time to see how many of them make it.

Worth. Every. Cent.

I was having big back and forths with Hawthorn and West Coast fans on the drafts/trades boards saying that 'yes, Essendon is overpaying for McKay, but McKay is actually good'.

Mainly against that weird Caligo unit.

I haven't been keeping up... Are North fans back to begging for more priority picks from the AFL already?

Club is a basket case from head to toe just like we were a few years back. Our club finally forked out money for better leadership in admin and at board level and we've seen massive improvements since.

More kids for North will just equate to more talented players leaving for greener pastures like McKay last year and Zurhaar likely this season. They'll become a feeder club like Gold Coast has been for years.

Realistically if ur someone like Paul Curtis why on earth would you want to stay there when you're starved of ball forward of centre and frequently watch your team get belted while you're stuck doing SFA in the forward line? If he goes to a decent team he could be a star with his talent.

Anyway I say all power to them. Sonja is rubbish, list team is a disgrace and some of their players are just straight up lazy $$$ chasers. Sooner the fans begin demanding more from the club as a whole the sooner things will turn. Begging for picks wont do s**t all.

We could always pay players in brown paper bags under the desk

No you couldn't. You'd be struggling to pay the cap now as it is. And the last time you were even in a position to pay over the cap it was because you were 20% Carlton owned.

Get back to me when you, with all your glorious money, win a final

Imagine losing a flag to a club that you owned lol

If you guys start delicately sniffing each others hair I am out of here.

North don't have to worry about tall defenders this week.... Actually they don't even have to worry about medium defenders either...
Gini will kick 4 at a minimum
