hahahahahahahahahahahaha...Winderlich is the most UNDERRATED player on this forum by a mile, its as if people have erased 2007 out of their collective memories.

Fit Winderlich = best 18, let alone 22

tend to agree here - for any doubters go back to the 07 game with the dons beating the eagles at the dome and you'll see the quality of winderlich when fit.

however i have doubts he'll get back to that level with his back problems and sadly could retire prematurely.

i'm surprised several have jetta in the best 22 - i couldn't even fit him in the best 25. he's overrated on what he's currently done - no doubt he is talented but he needs to get more of the ball which he may well do with more games under his belt. however until that point his form does not warrant selection in the best side.

gotta say i disagree with you a fair bit. i disagree that winderlich is overrated. he is a good player definately best 22 the key though is to only play him when he is fit, he has shown that when he isnt 100% he isnt up to league football but when he is he can be very damaging, if he is fit he is in our best 22.

i agree with NLM, his spot will be taken my myers imo, he can provide very good run out of defensive 50 but myers is a better defender and has better skills so he will take over from NLM.

you really underrate slattery, imo he is one of our most important players, we got annihilated by medium and small defenders last season, medhurst, motlop etc. slattery is our best small defender and is crucial to our set up. he is definately in our best 22.

jay nash is alright and he seemed to get better as the season progressed. still isnt in my best 22, dempsey takes nash's spot imo.

FB: Slattery, Fletcher, Pears
CHB: Dempsey, Ryder, Houli
C: Stanton, Watson, Riemers
CHF: Monfries, Lucas, Gumbelton
FF: Jetta, Lloyd, Davey
RR: Hille, Welsh, Mcveigh
Int: Laycock, Myers, Lonergan, Lovett
Em: Hurley, Neagle, Winderlich

Prismall to play a bit of reserves footy until he gets right

How can you say that Dempsey deserves a position in our best 22 over Nash. What has Dempsey shown in his handful of games that gets him over the line before Nash?
Nash has shown far more then enough to make it to our best 22 over Dempsey, and would be that way if Knights had no say in it (with Dempsey being his love child and all)

B: Henry Slattery - Dustin Fletcher - Tayte Pears
HB: David Myers - Paddy Ryder - Courtenay Dempsey
C: Bachar Houli - Jobe Watson - Brent Stanton
HF: Adam McPhee - Scott Lucas - Alwyn Davey
F: Angus Monfries - Matthew Lloyd - Jay Neagle/Scott Gumbleton

FOLL: David Hille - Andrew Welsh - Mark McVeigh

I/C: Jason Laycock - Sam Lonergan - Kyle Reimers - Andrew Lovett

We need more Sam Lonergans and less Andrew Lovetts. Absolutely no question about it.

Lonergan is so crucial to our setup! So are "Buddha" Hocking, McVeigh, Welsh, Watson, Slattery, Myers, McPhee, Reimers and Hille.

It's vitally important this group of players stays fit for the majority of the season. Otherwise our centre starts to look a little soft. Our worst losses seemed to come when missing some of these types last season.
Yup
Time and time again people forget about or ignore strength.
One of THE most important attributes, and the most under-rated, particularly on these boards.

IMO Dempsey has to do something to push ahead of Slattery, Myers and arguably Atkinson & Hocking. 5 games on a wing spread over 3 years does not force selection in the backline - particularly as we're crying out for some stability & dependability down there.

On paper those 3 might not be in Essendon's best 22 but I don't think you will see any of those 3 playing at Bendigo next season. Laycock would be the most likely of the 3 to be playing in the seconds if they decide to play Ryder as the second ruckman or he just loaps around like he did for a majority of this past season
Good for "paper"
What about on the field? Still going to be cut up by any team that has more than 1 small forward?

Agreeing on Jetta tbh. Not an automatic selection, needs to stick his hand up more often - the Freo game springs to mind

Have seen him play in that position. Didn't like it. Is more suited for a midfield/half forward decision.
He gives us soo much run from half back. Midfield/Half Back is where he'll play.

His performances in 2007 alone showed how important he is to us. Just needs to get over his injury problems and you'll see what we missed this year.

And who could forget that Judd-esque goal he scored against Adelaide in 2007 at the dome. Certainly had me off my seat. :D

He'll benefit from a bigger tank next season, hopefully.

He was finding his way to the football a lot better as the season went on, and when he can stop playing in only spurts, I think we'll see him have some big impacts on matches.

He and Davey make our forwardline look a hell of a lot more dangerous.

I want him in the side on the wing but am not sure who to take out.

Rough guide as to what the team may look like come round 1 ;

F: Leroy Jetta - Scott Lucas - Adam McPhee
R: David Hille - Mark McVeigh - Brent Stanton

Dempsey has actually played well in literally every game he's played, he has defensive skills (something Nash does not), better skills and is quicker - a better footballer.

Nash would want to improve a helluva lot in his defensively because he will quickly find himself at Bendigo

No chance. Will be twice the player Winderlich is by 2010.

Relevance to 2009?

every single game dempsey has played has been class imo. he is at least as good as nash on the attack but the difference is his ability to mark his opponent is a lot greater then nash's. just because nash has had more chances to prove himself doesnt mean he should be chosen ahead of dempsey. i would put dempsey in before him and im sure the majority of essendon supporters here would to.

to the questions being raised about jetta, the reason i would put him in my best 22 is because our forward line is so much more dangerous with him and davey running around in it, and when davey played this year he played a lot in the midfeild. if that is something knights is going to pursue with davey then we need another quick small forward which jetta is. people complain about him not getting enough of the ball which is a fair observation but its not always easy when your playing FP in a losing team. whenever jetta gets the ball he can do things with it which no-one else on our list can do. he needs time, which i would be prepared to give him.

F: Leroy Jetta - Scott Lucas - Adam McPhee
E: David Myers - Angus Monfries - Jay Nash - Scott Gumbleton

Gus gets a game ahead of Jetta

No disrespect RIG but that would be scary. I rate Winders but he has no defensive capabilities at all, he makes Jay Nash look like the 2nd coming of Silvani.

Winders runs in both directions very well.

Our best back flanker.

B: H.Slattery, D.Fletcher, T.Pears
HB: J.Nash, P.Ryder, A.Lovett
C: B.Stanton, J.Watson, K.Riemers
HF: A.Monfries, S.Lucas, A.McPhee
F: A.Davey, M.Lloyd, L.Jetta
R: D.Hille, M.McVeigh, S.Lonergan
INT: J.Laycock, A.Welsh, B.Prismall, B.Houli

EMG: C. Dempsey, J.Neagle, N.Lovett-Murray

I think that if a fit Gumbleton was ready for AFL he would be a straight starter in the team. In which case it would look as such:

B: H.Slattery, D.Fletcher, T.Pears
HB: A.McPhee, P.Ryder, A.Lovett
C: B.Stanton, J.Watson, K.Riemers
HF: A.Monfries, S.Gumbleton, S.Lucas
F: A.Davey, M.Lloyd, L.Jetta
R: D.Hille, M.McVeigh, S.Lonergan
INT: J.Laycock, A.Welsh, B.Prismall, B.Houli

EMG: J.Nash, C. Dempsey, N.Lovett-Murray

Gus gets a game ahead of Jetta

He probably does, but I'd like to see Gus work his way into the team instead of guarenteed a game every week. He has got potential, but he hasn't really lived up to it as of yet. A little kick in the butt early might fix that and turn him into that elite player quicker.
