He probably does, but I'd like to see Gus work his way into the team instead of guarenteed a game every week. He has got potential, but he hasn't really lived up to it as of yet. A little kick in the butt early might fix that and turn him into that elite player quicker.

monfries started 08 in the vfl and had to earn his spot this year.

how exciting do some of these teams look?
honestely i think we have to be heading in only one direction, and that is up.
can't wait until i see some of these young players break through and become stars. we have so much young talent here, just hope injuries don't lead us a stray again in 2009

I think that if a fit Gumbleton was ready for AFL he would be a straight starter in the team. In which case it would look as such:

If John Williams (RIG) was the best player in the league, he'd be a certain starter.

That's exactly how I'd describe Jetta.

What's stopping us from doing the same again?

Because he's bloody earnt his spot. You make someone earn it, and then earn it again once they've already earned it???

Monfries 'moved' his reputation last season from being potentially a very good player to being a worthy selection in Essendon's best 22, no doubt.

Leroy is in a similar possy as Monfires was 2 years ago...

No disrespect RIG but that would be scary. I rate Winders but he has no defensive capabilities at all, he makes Jay Nash look like the 2nd coming of Silvani.

Agree totally Toni.. Can't agree with RIG and Ben.. Winders gets lost in back line and finds himself floating under the ball too often... I would not mind lining up on him as an AFL HFF. Much prefer him on the wing

Angus isn't one of them.

The bloke finished 6th in our B&F, he's a lock in our best side at the moment.

That says a lot about our team last season. I don't think he had a fantastic season at all, but finishing in the first half a dozen in our B&F reflects otherwise.

We had a poor last year with heaps of injuries, but if that trend doesn't continue (fingers crossed) then I can't see him finishing in the top 10 in the B&F count next year unless he gets a talking to by Knights or just gets dropped for a match or two. There were too many times where he'd stroll into goal last season, only to be tackled by opposition defenders. Anyway, lets not flood the team thread with Angus talk. Lets just hope he can fulfill his potential sometime in the near future. :thumbsu:

I think that's an extremely negative view of him, but you're welcome to think what you like. How getting dropped for a match or two is going to magically turn him into something else I don't understand and I can't for the life of me think of an example of him 'strolling' into goal.

At the end of the day, I think he fills the defensive forward slot to perfection and I can't see him being shifted. His job on Heath Shaw showed exactly what he could be for us.

Absolute tripe...did you see Gus' second half of the year by any chance?

This isn't really our best 22, more a crack at our Round 1 side.
I'm making the presumption that Winderlich won't get up, Prismall isn't available and that we won't have any injuries (not likely).

B. Pears Fletcher Slattery
HB. Myers Ryder Dempsey
C. McPhee Watson Lovett
HF. Davey Gumby Lloyd
F. Neagle Lucas Jetta
R. Hille Stanton McVeigh
INT. Monfries Welsh Lonergan Laycock

EM. NLM Nash Houli Reimers

FB:Slatters Fletch McPhee
B:Nash/Remiers Ryder Welsh (tagger, moves into midfield)
C:Lloyd Prismall Houli
F:Lovett Lucas Watson
FF:Davey Gumby Monfries
R:Hille McVeigh Stanton
Int: Jetta Winderlich Lonergan Remiers/Nash
Em: Laycock (spud, but we need some backup rucks, don't we?) Dempsey (injury prone, but not a bad player) Neagle (has to prove himself sometime) Myers (could be a gun, has played a few games) Nafe LM (he isn't bad, but can't get the job done)

I think we should look for new opportunities for players, e.g. Lloyd on the wing, this could be Richo like. Don't have a go at me for saying that the idea of a Tall Forward on the wing is too much a copy of Richmond, cos it may actually work. Who watched the game where Lloyd took that hanger over like 4 people? In that game, he moved up the ground and got like 10-15 more possies than he usually would. What do you think?

I reckon you are very close but there is no way Houli won't be in the team and most likely Reimers also.

Of course it's hard to find who they will replace but most likely Monfries and Jetta or even McPhee, from a balance point of view.

That backline is excellent and i also really like Davey on a HFF as it will involve him in the play a lot more.

Of course it's unlikely all will be available for selection so it's probably a moot point.

I'll have a go assuming Prismall (will come into the team pretty quickly when he's ready) and Winders won't be available:

B: Tayte Pears, Dustin Fletcher, Sam Lonergan (Won't play here but had to fit him in)

HB: David Myers, Patrick Ryder, Courtenay Dempsey

C: Andrew Lovett, Jobe Watson, Brent Stanton

HF: Alwyn Davey, Scott Gumbleton, Matthew Lloyd

F: Leroy Jetta, Scott Lucas, Kyle Reimers

R: David Hille, Mark Mcveigh, Andrew Welsh

Int: Tom Bellchambers, Adam Mcphee, Bachar Houli, Angus Monfries

Emerg: Jay Nash, Jay Neagle, Nathan Lovett-Murray, Henry Slattery
