I'd say Jolly and Ball are the two certainties, with Pendlebury, Swan, and Beams being the primary three going through the other two spots. Then there will be cameos from a number of others (Sidebottom, Thomas, Fasolo, Blair, Krak).

Ruck; Jolly
Smalls/Mediums; Ball, Swan, Pendlebury.

That's in a perfect world, where one centre bounce clearance and score is to win a game of football, but throughout the year we will rotate plenty through there.

What it does show though is how much we missed one player in particular, as I doubt there's anyone who will say Ball isn't in that starting four when all are fit.

Beams and Sidey are the next two obviously, then there's a long list of optional extras to add to the rotation.

I'd say our best is:

----------------Jolly-------Ball------------------
-----Thomas------------------------Swan---------
---------------Pendles----Beams-----------------

But the midfield experiences the heaviest rotation on the ground. The depth is equally important. We can also rotate Young, Sidebottom, Blair, Martin, Dwyer, Fasolo and Johnson through there.

As much as Beams is good in the midfield which we saw last year, he's alot better in a forward role one of the most accurate infront of goals at the club, and I can see him playing that more in this year with Ball being back

I'd love for us to also give Young a rotation in the midfield, but he's more of a wingman.

Beams biggest weapon forward was his kicking to advantage stats.

Still I think midfield is his go. We missed Balls kamikazi style last year. But I don't think it boils down to replacing one with the other. Rather having both in there and getting the benefits of the best of both worlds.

Fair point, Just thinking about Ball and Beams in the same midfield makes my mouth water.I'm really hoping he can back up last years form up with Ball in the side again, I have no doubts he will.

Not Fasolo, doesn't have the tank. Mccaffer is one I one include in there though, was in the middle when he hurt himself in the nab cup. Possibly Didak but a lot will depend on his body holding up now. Thomas will miss two more months of footy he's going to be behind the 8 ball all year, tough for him to play starting mid imo. Marty Clarke used a tagger more often is something I'd like to see. Can't have Josh Kennedy racking up 35 and kicking 4 goals at will.

What about Josh Thomas, should get a game or too barring injury. Reports at training say he is showing a lot! :)

Pendles, swan & ball for mine would be first choice 3. Form & fitness should be the decider. The great thing to come out of Ball's injury was the development of Beams in the middle. I hope we continue a focus on development, try to uncover the next Beams.

+1

It wasn't as if Beams wasn't kicking any goals when he played mid for us this year. One of his strengths as a mid is his ability to hit the scoreboard, something which other mids seemed to miss last season. We also missed Ball in that respect, who surprisingly hits the scoreboard for someone of his height and perceived lack of kicking penetration.

Starting Center line: d. Thomas (injured/doubtful), Swan, Young
Starting On-Ballers: Jolly, Pendles, Beams, (Ball to be eased back in)

On-Ball Rotation: Ball, Fasolo, Q. Lynch
Center line Rotation: Roids, Seedy, Sidebottom

Pushing hard for a spot: Blair, Marley, Hudson

Possibles: Grundy, J. Thomas, Kennedy, Sinclair

All looking good for a super year with plenty of depth and pushing up for selection, their is some decent cover for injuries and there is plenty of pressure on those selected to perform

Half the squad gets a run in the middle. That's footy these days.

agree mate
not the greatest question in my book
clearly we have a midfield group of Jolly/Hudson/Witts together with ball beams swan pendles daisy and steele atleast
clearly it is not a choice between pendles/swan/beams....they all play in there

That's exactly right. We shouldn't be focusing on our starting 4. We are blessed that we potentially have 4 midfield stars (excluding the Rucks) like Pendles, Swan, Ball & Beams who will all take it in turns as a starting 3 bearing in mind that most midfielders are only on for 4-8 minutes at a time. It's a luxury that when our first midfielder goes off for a spell he will be replaced by another gun. Then we add Thomas, Blair, Clarke, Macaffer etc we have the depth we sadly missed last year. Pumped about the season ahead.

I actually think I have seen someone continually put Ball on the forward flank. I think it was Knightmare.

For the three non-ruck inside midfield positions (e.g. centre square positions), I would have Ball, Pendles, and Beams. Swan to be first change in there, but to run around on a wing or forward (or bench) when he isn't. Blair and Thomas to get some good minutes in there as well.
