Player Watch Pick #12 (2021) - Josh Sinn

Hornet aside, Sinn is the young guy with the biggest potential in our side.

I like the idea of Sinn playing down back to start his career whether it is to run off with his break neck speed but also to shut down those pesky small forwards because he has the wheels.

I think on exposed form in the SANFL he is a Midfielder that for one reason or another has been played repeatedly out of position. This may be to look after body returning from injury, be the designated kicker, efforts or defensive work/understanding, who knows?

Let’s hope, our midfield quartet of Rozee, Butters, JHF and Drew is already a pretty formidable line up, if we can add a fifth and sixth string to this bow in Sinn, Jackson, Mead, SPP, Houston, Lorenz, Charleson, Bergman… phowa… also why ‘selling the farm’ for the Bigs we brought in this year was an ‘educated gamble’
Always funny how even port supporters forget our only Brownlow medalist who only just turned 29 when talking about our midfield… not a bad “fifth or sixth string”

Agree. There is a major disconnect between this article and what is evident on the track. Either the journo has some inside info or he made this up from his desk. Still I want to believe Sinn is ready to explode so much, I’m willing to believe it.
A similar thing happened preseason last year when they suggested that Barkla was presssing for senior games. I hope they aren't just making stuff up again. Sinn hasn't been a regular in the internal scratch matches this preseason.

They tend to leak a couple of fairy tales to keep the natives happy in off season.
Positive vibes to increase membership.

Not forgotten, was talking 4-6 years down the track.

I think Boak will play some really good games also this year as the 6th or 7th option.

I laughed when I saw this. Lazy reporting and just a complete stab in the dark.

As much as i'd love it to be true, Sinn isn't going to make it unless there is an incredibly big change to his kicking and his effort/mongrel. His absolutely stunk in the games he played. Weaker efforts than Bonner.

He's been on the list 2 years. People talking on here like he's 25 years old with no scope to grow. He could make a few posters on this board look very foolish.

I hope you are right Mr/Mrs Sinn.

I'm sure everyone wants him to make it and become the player he was touted to be pre-draft. He just hasn't shown any of that yet, which is frustrating for supporters after how much we gave up to draft him.

While he's on the list, I will back him in, as I will every player on the list. Fortunately for him, he has two more years on his contract to show why we rated him so highly in 2021. But the longer he takes, the more shiny new toys join the list and make it that much harder for him.

Like no doubt all Port supporters I would like to see Josh Sinn play some top footy in 2024 and show what all the fuss was about when we drafted him, but injury and lack of experience aside there is obviously a lot more to being a successful AFL player than occasionally running fast, and then too often following it up by spraying the kick sideways with the intended target not even in the same post code.

Hopefully Josh will be able to string a number of good games together for the Maggies and show significant improvement if he gets a chance at the top level, but as suggested by 240volt above, another mediocre year from him and the club may unfortunately have to consider their options.

I think Williams is a great case study of someone who got written-off here, but who very quickly has become a best-22 player once he got consistent games in, and was given a senior opportunity.

Sinn has struggled to get regular games because of the niggly injuries. Subsequently he has been able to show very little, not only to us, but to himself! I doubt he has much confidence and self-belief going. Hopefully he can stay healthy through 2024, get a regular block of sanfl games under his belt, and get some senior games in. The skills he had as a junior havent disappeared, they are just covered over.

You missed an important step here. The one where the player worked on their deficiencies in their own time to get themselves in a position to be selected.

On the flipside, that is two years hes had the chance to show extremely basic expectations like effort and putting your head over the ball.

Playing Devil's Advocate. How many games has he played to give us an accurate read on that? Very little AFL, and spasmodic in the SANFL. When he did play, he would have lacked confidence in his own body, so IMO it has been hard to make a call on that.

We need to see him play out the full year to make a definitive judgment. I really hope he can remain injury-free in 2024, and give himself a red-hot go at it.

I hope he shows something this year and that my gut feel on him not making it is completely wrong.

Whilst i don't think there are many of us on here writing him off after only 2 years, the signs haven't been great. The games he played in the AFL have all been pretty poor if we are being honest, barely sighted for most of the games.

We've had other high draft picks play pretty well from game 1, even ones that had injury issues like Hamish Hartlett but you could tell he had something special in his early games, but even he failed to live up to the early hype. It has just felt in the games i've seen of Sinn that he just doesn't seem to have it just yet, and if he wasn't pick 12 he wouldn't have been selected.

The problem with Sinn is that you have to go back to when he was like 16 or 17 to find a time when he wasn't injured. He's shown essentially nothing in men's football, the entire rating of him is based on boy's football that was now quite a long time ago.

I think there's a chance he becomes a solid AFL player, largely because the club is likely to put plenty of time into him due to his draft number. There is next to no chance he becomes a high quality AFL player from here.

It's a bit early to be writing Sinn off. He played 4 games in his first year and 14 in his second year. From his stats, he played a few good games in his second year. Hopefully he plays pretty much a full year and shows why he was rated. It's not like Sinn was some left field draft bolter, he basically went where predicted. See what he shows this year and then decide if he can play.

Yes he’s only been on our list for a couple years but he basically hasn’t played at any level consistent high level football for 5 years now dating back to his underage year which is essentially what he was drafted on since then he missed most his draft year.

5 years of constant injuries and average form isn’t anything to be excited about. He’s entering this year again off virtually no pre season and based on previous years of that occurring, I think there’s a very high probability he breaks down again.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t play more than a handful of AFL games over his career. Unfortunate but history suggests his body just won’t cope.

Very different to Williams who lacked fitness but not the constant injuries. Reminds me of Freeman a few years back and I think he’ll follow a similar path.

I’m hoping he at least turns out like a Hamish Hartlett, perhaps not the star he was predicted to be but a solid contributor and leader. It took hammer a few seasons to really get going and conditions his injury prone body but he probably showed a lot more skill and class in his early games.

I reckon if he doesn’t show real improvement this year I’d be parting ways seasons end.
He’s always looked a bog average footballer to me.
The first internal trial match, his defensive work was outstanding and he hit a 40-50meter kick that flat out hit a 50cmX50cm box to pierce multiple defenders. His pace was outstanding and he just hunted like a top end talent.

Then the injuries hit… OP wasn’t it?

Although I'm pro Sinn, I have a few questions like everyone else.

But yes, Hartlett, the comp I was thinking was Stephen Curry. Injury prone early in his career and when he got over them, he played well.
