I just think its ridiculous to suggest that he needs his family because he got crook with a virus that one time and is now over it.

He might be going because he was a potential flight risk from the very beginning, like Ben Jacobs and Ollie wines might’ve too if it wasn’t for 2013-14 being really promising seasons for the club.

The illness would have absolutely nothing to do with it in my opinion.

Apparently his illness was a little bit more severe than anyone at the club let on. Whilst it may not have anything to do with a desire to return home, I can certainly understand if it played a role.

3 years ago I was doing fifo work between Adelaide and Melbourne. Whilst I was in Adelaide one week I had a severe medical episode requiring admission to ICU. It was the scariest moment of my life and all I kept thinking was how lucky I was that this happened in Adelaide where my family were. They were ableto essentially be with me 24/7, and whilst there are nurses at every hospital to look after you, sometimes a personal touch having a loved one help you drink your water, cut your meals etc (I was paralysed at the time) meant an absolute ton in the moment.

First thing i did when i was able bodied again and could walk (albeit with a stick) and function like a semi normal member of society, i sold my apartment in Melbourne and moved back to Adelaide permanently. I don't need the support now, and i didn't need it once I was out of hospital, but that 6-8 week period reminded me how privileged I was to have such a great supportive family and that sometimes having the extra time with those loved ones is worth more than having a different employer requiring work in a different city - regardless of how easy travel is these days.

Yep. He was hospitalised and they couldn't work out what was wrong with him. Lots of blood tests and lots of unknown. His girlfriend isn't leaving Melbourne and he's had interest from a few clubs. I think he's a huge loss but having kids the same age I understand why both he and his family would want him home after what they all went through.

I think he was even misdiagnosed with something I can say he was bloody lucky it was.

Now there might be nothing to this, or there could be something to this, that's for the future to tell us. Call me crazy, but I have always seen Mr. Bergman as an Essendon player. I look at him and to me, his presence just screams 'Essendon'. I believe he was always destined to end up at the Bombers football club, it was just a matter of when that would be.
I'm really sorry for our loss, but I'm even more sorry to the lad himself. Unfortunately, that's just his destiny.

Yeah well clearly the details of his illness weren't disclosed at all. The information that came from the club was that he had an "illness" and that was that. Presumed at the time that it was Covid and a bad case of it that lingered for a long time. Obviously it was much more than this but I don't have any intel on that.

It still sounds to me like he was a flight risk before the illness though, with Girlfriend not prepared to move and all of that. We've been lucky that most of our Victorian draftees have embraced Adelaide, we've had a stack that have happily moved their lives here but looks like we are going to have a couple losses this year. Certainly doesn't help that we are 8 and 12, not sure either Amon or Bergman want to leave if we were in premiership contention.

I don't see why - his Dad played for Melbourne so there would be a greater likelihood that he might want to go there.

Unless there is some tragic issue with his family etc (e.g. Impy case), I think the club must make a stand and say he's not going unless we get at least a mid range first rounder for him or suitable player exchange. I think we have been too accommodating at times in recent years. Many players across different AFL clubs have wanted to leave for their home states and clubs have said no, only for them to have long careers at their clubs. Given his quality, he could well be worth more as a trade at the end of next year anyway.

Very disappointing as I see great potential/skills/versatility/poise under pressure. A player we surely want to keep.

That's got to be a given. If we're not getting a decent pick anyway, why would we trade out of fear of what me might get next year.

Bergman for Wanganeen-Milera? Both similar draft picks and the Saints have nothing else of interest unless willing to part with their first rounder.

At least he’s an SA lad and could try get in his ear early to come home.
