From the looks of it we will have a few retire

ebert
Westhoff
I think watts is gone
buzza

that’s 4 gone

Frederick could be let go.

Mayes and lienert are good depth.
with jones coming in will we keep both? Maybe. Maybe not. My preference is to keep mayes over lienert but it’s not such a bad call either way

McKenzie and woodcock have played themselves into new contracts. They’re the priorities now.

pasini and Grundy are important as our only developing key defenders

Burgs should get another year to actually show he can play

I don’t see cox as a need but with reports that he’s played well in trials I expect he gets another contract. I really see him as surplus.

Hinkley loves Sutcliffe, but do the list managers? They’ll probably give him another year I guess.

Patmore??? Could be gone, could stay?? Would love to see him get another year. Worried that we haven’t seen his name mentioned in the bests for trials or as an emergency. Probably a sign he’s gone.

Atley and drew?

I think both could have a future if given a chance but I suspect we let atley go and sign drew. Under no circumstances can we let both go.

as good as lots of our young players look we’ve got a wide spread of young players but I don’t see many as genuine centre mids in and under extractors.

So likely outs probably

ebert, westhoff, buzza, watts, atley, Frederick and Patmore is my guess.

and I suspect we bring in hately, Jones, taj (I’m not 100% that he comes to us, where are him and his dad on coaching / playing together?)

that leaves 4 more list spots (but maybe the lists get cut by 2 or we go under) so maybe another 2 players through draft / free agency / trade ?
If Westhoff, Watts and Buzza go this could be another 2014 draft year where we select a bunch of talls late in the draft. Howard, Austin, Palmer and Frampton that year with picks 50+. Didn’t end up with any long term stars out of that but we got an alright return through trades. That seems to be Geoff Parker’s MO; identity where a draft is strong and go hard at those player types or pick ranges.

I don’t think we should keep 3 of Sutcliffe, Lienert and Mayes. Also would like to see more of Frederick but without SANFL only the club would know how he is tracking.

All the big names are locked away. Remaining out of contract players:
2020
7 Brad Ebert*
12 Trent McKenzie
13 Wylie Buzza
23 Jack Watts
28 Willem Drew
30 Joe Atley
31 Trent Burgoyne (1st year rookie)
32 Sam Mayes
36 Boyd Woodcock (1st year rookie)
37 Jake Patmore
39 Justin Westhoff**
40 Jarrod Lienert
41 Riley Grundy (1st year rookie)
45 Martin Frederick (2nd year category B rookie)
47 Tobin Cox (2nd year rookie)
48 Jake Pasini (1st year rookie)
50 Cameron Sutcliffe (2nd year rookie)

If it were up to me:

7 Brad Ebert - 1 year if he's medically cleared to go around again
12 Trent McKenzie - Start with 1 year but go up to 2 if necessary
13 Wylie Buzza - Delist
23 Jack Watts - 1 year
28 Willem Drew - 1 year
30 Joe Atley - delist
31 Trent Burgoyne (1st year rookie) - 1 year
32 Sam Mayes - 1 year
36 Boyd Woodcock - 2 years
37 Jake Patmore - Lean towards 1 year but potential delist if we need the list space
39 Justin Westhoff - Retire
40 Jarrod Lienert - preferably delist, but possibly gets 1 year out of necessity if we don't recruit a mature age tall defender from elsewhere
41 Riley Grundy (1st year rookie) - 1 year
45 Martin Frederick (2nd year category B rookie) - Delist
47 Tobin Cox (2nd year rookie) - Delist
48 Jake Pasini (1st year rookie) - 1 year
50 Cameron Sutcliffe (2nd year rookie) - Delist

Thanks. Was wondering who was left. Apparently McKenzie is getting a one year deal.

So that's 6 delisted, which gets our list down to 39 (36 main list, 3 rookies with Woodcock upgraded). Potentially 34 on the main list if Patmore & Lienert go.

How deep we cut really depends on what list sizes look like at the end of the day, and what our draft position ends up looking like.

Thats 8 players gone which will get our list size down and let us draft Jones & Taj.

i rate patmore..... id give him one more go.
apparently linert has interest in him else where.

So I thought it might be an interesting idea to go through the 28+ year olds and have a look at their understudies/lack thereof:
Jonas - 28: Grundy
Motlop - 29: Farrell
Ebert - 30: Georgiades?
Hartlett - 30: Garner/L Jones
Gray - 32: Butters
Boak - 32: Houston/Rozee
Rockliff - 30: Drew
McKenzie - 28: Pasini
Dixon - 29: Buzza/No-one
Watts - 29: Lienert
Westhoff - 33: Ladhams
Sutcliffe - 28: Not Required

I think it shows a couple of things:
- Losing Dixon will drastically reshape our forwardline
- Losing Boak & Gray means we lose defenders/forwards (Houston/Rozee/Butters) that in turn need to be replaced. I think Woodcock, Williams & Bergman & co can fill the breach, but I'm wary.
- We need to get some games into our KPD depth, otherwise we are exposed.

I feel the lists will be cut to 36 or 37 plus an NGA and a Rookie pick. Given we would want Jones and Schofield that would wipe out the NGA and the rookie picks I would think. I think most drafting will come via pick swap trading with other clubs this year due to our list depth being so strong. Our players are so versatile at present, the only real position we need to look at for depth is to cover Charlie but I think Hayes could implement this into his game along with his ruck trade. If Westy retires (assumed) then Todd and Mitch have that covered. Plenty of depth through the back lines although another tall would be handy (how is Grundy tracking and is he worth keeping)? Boyd and Dyl Williams are learning their trades and are ready if Robbie retires at the end of next year and Boyd can get up ground a fair bhilst Connor and Zak are building their mid time. I
cant really see a need in us being too active in the trade and sadly there’s going to be some unlucky guys cut from the system shortly in an awful year to try to get redrafted due to list cuts.

Cuts for mine:

Patmore
Atley
Watts
Westy (Retire)
Ebert(retire)
Cox
Buzza
Mayes or Sutcliffe (May keep one for depth and experience)
Burgoyne
Frederick

Must sign up:
Drew
Woodcock

Look at in draft:
Jackson Hately
Jack Graham
Kyle Hartigan

Liam Pickering stated he doubted if lists will be cut much, as the AFL have left it too late and several clubs already have contracted more players than some believe it will be cut too. Plus 3 or 4 months to iron out a revised collective bargaining agreement.
