You can only be the best you can be at any certain time in history.

Clubs would rather hang their hat on being successful 100 years ago than never successful at all. We like to laugh at clubs like St.Kilda for a reason.

Where it becomes a problem is if you win a few a century ago and then have a huge dry spell. Then you might become Fitzroy.

Winning flags sporadically throughout all eras is important as it attracts different generations of people. To say noone cares is a bit short sighted when it's about gaining and maintaining support.

I will agree that bragging about flags from 100 years ago makes you a loser, but bragging about achievements that you had nothing to do with at any point in time is no different.

But, we are on a football forum, and so bragging about what a bunch of other people did on a field is kind of the point of the whole thing.

....

What really got me was Gil McLachlan, AFL CEO launching the thing at the MCG. And yet he runs a bloody mile at any attempt by Port to recognise its past history.
It is extremely important to Gil and the AFL that every Victorian club should be able to recognise and celebrate their full history. The same doesn't hold for "interstate" club's in the national competition.

Well they do let Brizroy & Sydney celebrate their 'roots' when in reality both are complete takeovers with little relevance to the holy VFL ghost.

North Melbourne young gun Tarryn Thomas will take leave from the club in the wake of fresh allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

Thomas was charged in January with threatening to distribute an intimate image, and was also stopped by police for allegedly driving with a suspended licence over the Christmas break.

On Wednesday, News Corp published claims that a number of other women have made complaints to the AFL that have now been referred to police.

Kangaroos under fire amid 'harrowing' scandal

"will take leave". Club sounds like it is being really proactive.

What an utter turd this bloke is. Gets parachuted into GWS purely to give some "credibility" to him getting the head job at Essendon again. Thankfully Sheedy lost out and he didn't get it, so he's just backed up his bat and ball and walked out. GWS and GC are just feeders for the Vic clubs. Such an embarrassing league.

Oh and piss off hirdy, but stay gone this time.

Colin Carter was on 6PR last night trying to justify his push. "I was born in WA - I only started barracking for Geelong when Polly Farmer came over, blah, blah", but as soon as they raised WA and SA historical premierships (esp Port Adelaide), Carter was all "Ah, yeah, nah, we're talking about what was essentially the same competition in the VFA/VFL, which we all know evolved into today's AFL"

Ensuing discussion and talkback pretty much settled on yeah, clubs can count whatever flags they've won, but they have to be kept in separate categories - eg when Geelong say they've won 20 flags or whatever it needs to be broken down into eras.

Both are Victorian clubs in the eyes of the AFL. Sydney is still South Melbourne despite changing their name, relocating to another state and going through private ownership. Brisbane is really just a relocated Fitzroy and has no connection to the Brisbane Bears except when it is convenient for the AFL. Neither are comparable with the Port Power Football Club established around 1996.

Unlike the other VFL/AFL "interstate" clubs we are the only club to have existed in a state league before joining the AFL and therefore the only current club affected by the completely VFL/AFL centric view of clubs' histories. We are an inconvienience to this view and therefore largely ignored and considered irrelevant.

Just on Tarryn Thomas - is this the worst tattoo in the history of the world?

Everything on Liberatore wins that award till the end of time

That Fitzroy’s 1916 premiership is the WOAT across any top flight sport:

• 4 team, 12 game interwar comp
• they took the spoon with a 2-1-9 record
• qualified for the 4-team finals series and bugger me, ran the table to win the flag

But most people don’t even know about it, lest care to write off its validity, makes all this hustle and bustle about relatively ancient history fairly comical.

Dunno, have you seen the jailhouse amateur abortions Charlie Dixon is covered in?
I don't think Dixon has ridiculous sentiments like 'live your truth'

When did the truth become 'yours' or 'mine', the truth is facts. The truth cares not for points of view.

Sorry, Obi Wan.

I'm not sure if many will be interested to hear this Karl Amon interview, but holy shit. The difference in quality of interview and probing questions in this interview versus the mumbling and bumbling shit we get over here from Stephen Rowe is just phenomenal. This is just a good solid interview, nothing groundbreaking, nothing tricky, just good solid questioning that just probes that little bit deeper than the superficial crap we get from the SA media.
