Ive always felt a bit bad for Chayse Jones. Doesnt seem as much of a flog as many of his teammates, yet will always be judged to an insanely high standard as he went top 10 in arguably what could be the best draft class of all time.

If he had gone at pick 25 a year earlier or later we probably wouldnt know his name and the career he has had would be considered solid enough.

Once a contract is signed you shouldn’t be able to change the terms - the clubs should be committed to that contract. Any negotiations are about an extension at the expiry of the existing deal.

But ironing out salary dumps is the most obvious of manipulations there is.

Iron it out, right after the recent Premier got an absolute gold plated deal.
Cheers.

I still don't understand why a player would ever accept to have their contract altered so that they received the contract value over a longer period. Clubs can't do that unilaterally.
Guarantee income over a longer period with more job security.

The contract would likely come with a higher overall price as well just over a longer period.

Given an AFL players average wage and limited time of an AFL player’s career, it deserves fair consideration.

If they inflated the contract value it may make some sense if the player doesn't feel confident of receiving another contract. However it's always preferable to receive money sooner than delay it due to inflation and foregone interest that could be earned etc.

Today's SA State Budget contains no additional funding to help the Adelaide Football Club overcome a $15m blow-out in costs for their new base at Thebarton Oval. Treasurer Stephen Mullighan said no agreement had been reached and the government had no intention at this stage to do the “heavy lifting” for a “profitable” AFL club.

Maybe it's time for the Crows to cut their cloth to fit their budget rather than looking to the taxpayer to fund the spiralling costs of their development on public land? They could start by dropping plans for a second oval at the Thebarton site - something that wasn't on the agenda for wither the parklands or Brompton sites. Or maybe ask their many high profile business supporters to dig a little deeper into their own pockets?

Which in the case of Bowes and GC’s salary dump is exactly what happened. You can’t tell me that the contract extension wasn’t agreed to before the trade.

We are headed towards a recession, football clubs of either persuasion should not be receiving funding for the foreseeable future.

It is a bit more involved than that. Covid and peoples debt ratios haven’t helped as well. A recessions is going to hurt so many.
Not to mention the job figures released today show the economy is not slowing, putting even more pressure on inflation and interest rates.

But that is a subject for the politics/economics thread.

As long as CEs get paid more  #amirite?

Anyway back to football. Go the Power!

The Melbourne clubs must have maxed out their ability to exploit the old system.

They did the same with Father/Son and Priority Points.
Gave some Melbourne clubs a bit of a leg up then changed the rules.
