Dont forget grundy was piss at Collingwood for two years before going to Melbourne. He isnt even close to what he was. Id only be interested as a salary dump tbh. Rather back in someone else with more years in the tank.
You take him for a second rounder, but you're right, he's not worth what he might still command.

And for all Gawn’s mobility he did 95% of his work at clearances. Noticed he took a couple of marks around the ground but swept fa besides
1 goal. 29 disposals. 13 kicks. 16 handpasses. 5 marks. 39 hit outs. 4 turnovers. 8 intercepts....

Sweet FA?

C'mon. Was absolutely critical to the Melbourne win.

His field marking was impressive but 24 or so of his possessions were from grabbing the ball out of ruck and lumbering of with it, or following up his or mcinerneys taps, similar to peak primus, not from linking up in field play

Looking at the draw, Brisbane will likely win 5 of their last 6. So that means we need to secure 4 of the last 7. Tomorrow remains supremely important, regardless of the loss tonight.
There is really no point looking at the run home of other clubs. That just leads to more bedwetting. We just need to focus on us.

We have seven minor round games left. It's the toughest run home of any club in the top 8 so expecting us to win them all is unrealistic.

And claiming one game is more important than any other of those seven games we have left is just silly.

We do what we can to win them all of course.

But managing our squad to ensure we enter the finals with the best chance of winning everyone of THOSE finals games wherever they are played is what matters. This year, more than any in the past decade, I think our coaching staff have the focus and maturity to do just that.

I know I'm a broken record on this but IMHO the real lessons not just from this game but from this season are twofold:

1. A ruck who is not mobile across the ground and who is incapable of playing a key role up forward or back is useless in the modern game (much like the stay at home Full Forward); and

2. Having two traditional tap rucks, or even just one, is the stuff of history. A high quality mobile ruck who can compete across the ground backed up by a an old fashioned mobile ruck-rover type who can play a key position and take on extra ruck duties is invaluable.

Buckley has said publicly that Grundy is not a forward so getting him to play that role is a lost cause - and he should know. Maybe we look at trading Grundy in and getting him to play the key ruck role given Lycett is on his last legs and Visentini is still a work in progress ?
Your first point is 100% spot on.
The one trick pony ruckman is dead in todays game.

You would want a soft run after playing all those Blockbusters.
I think Melbourne supporters call them powder runs.

Who'd want max Gawn anyway he used to smash back a quick dart after training.

Got to well over 100 contests. Was on the ground for close to 120 minutes.

Gawn can be the Marlboro Man if he likes.

Oscar McInerney

13 disposals
6 tackles
110 minutes on the ground
33 hit outs
31 centre bounce contests
86 ruck contests.

Not a bad effort either.

Im on the record as saying Ruck is the most important position on the ground.

My argument is what a Ruck is and what is the performance standard.

In general, I am of the view you don’t invest high cap space or draft capital in ruckman. They simply don’t have as much impact on games. You just need a competent one.

Max Gawn, and maybe peak Nic Nat are the exceptions.
