Here's a novel idea - you could have something called a playing list where clubs can pick a set number of players and pay them a set amount and that's that.

Only exception would be a supplementary list for project players from other codes, etc, where you would also be allowed a set number with a set amount of pay.

There should be a publicised salary cap, like in the NFL, but you can have as many or as few players as you like within it, like the soccer.

Want to run a lean team full of champions? Go for it.

Want a fresh squad of low skilled athletes you can rotate to run teams off their feet, why not!

This article reveals who they believe are the top 10 highest paid sports bosses in Oz.

Its a bit of a guess for some of the spots, because as the article says, outside of Tennis Oz, via USA Internal Revenue Service filings - there are no other major sports governing bodies that disclose annual CEO salaries, willingly or otherwise – with the exception of the Australian Olympic Committee.

There is a mistake in the article. It was Mike Fitzpartick, not Richard Goyder who put a stop to the AFL's CEO's salary being published. Goyder took over from Fitzpatrick in February 2017.

Each year Tennis Australia lodges with the Internal Revenue Service in the US what is known as a Form 990; quite literally the federal tax return for a non-profit organisation. Why Tennis Australia applied for and still has tax-exempt status in the US remains a mystery – a Tennis Australia spokesperson would not respond to inquiries by The Weekend Australian.....

His pay, the report says, adds up to about $US2.4m ($3.62m) including bonuses. It is more than $1.6m ahead of the estimated $2m salary of the next highest-paid Australian sports administrator, AFL boss Andrew Dillon.
........
The AFL used to disclose CEO pay information, but AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder ended that tradition almost a decade ago when Gillon McLachlan became AFL CEO in 2014. The last full AFL pay disclosure was for ex-CEO Andrew Demetriou in 2013, when he received $1.8m, including performance bonuses and an additional $2m long-term incentive bonus. Demetriou’s salary was disclosed annually during his 11-year tenure, ...........

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon is understood to be paid about $2.2m annually, including bonuses. The AFL’s 2023 annual report, released before the start of the just-completed 2024 season, disclosed about $13.6m in total pay for its directors and executive officers – which at least includes the CEO, commissioners and at least 10 executives – compared with $11.8m in 2022.

Free kicks 11-4 in favour of North early in the second quarter of the AFLW grand final.
The umpiring has been shithouse. They have missed so many holding the player when they dont have the ball.

North win the premiership, basically smashed Brisbane who offensively were non-existent. Maybe we aren't that far behind the top group after all, because North Melbourne are in their own league.

Jasmine Garner gets 35 disposals in a GF. Shades of Simon Black and his 39 in 2003.

Should win the MVP award as the umpires arent voting for this award. The lack of votes she got in the W's B&F award was pathetic.

Clubs have complained about AFL taking long time to do things, and Jimmy Bartel had a couple of cracks at them around July that they say they will look at changes x or y but take forever to make a decision.

I like how Dillion says its become more stark how important the relationships with the clubs are. Why the heck they all of a sudden become such a stark thing?? This should always be a very important thing for the AFL.

Found this bit interesting in a long interview in the Sunday HS with Andrew Dillon about his first 12 months as CEO.

“What has become more stark is how important the relationships with the clubs are to the AFL. It was a focus for me coming into the role, and it is going to continue to be a focus going forward, making sure that the relationships are as good as they can be.

He said former West Coast CEO Trevor Nisbett, who is now working in an advisory role for the AFL, was currently meeting one-on-one with the club chief executives.
Dillon and AFL executive general manager Laura Kane will also continue to meet with the clubs to foster closer relationships.

The AFL spoke with former Magpies footy boss Graham Wright about potentially joining the league before he ultimately chose Carlton, where he will take over from Brian Cook as the Blues’ CEO at the end of next season.
Dillon said the AFL could add more experience to the football department in the future.

Nothing to see here, just like the amount of money Bailey Smith has paid himself...

Also
Smith has commercial connections to North Geelong headquartered retail giant Cotton On, modelling and designing his own clothing line with the business.
is definitely all above board and nothing to see here either...

Please do
The most blatantly biased and game changing umpiring I can recall in a big game is the 2015 preliminary final - Fremantle v Hawthorn. Matt Stevic went to town on the Dockers and completely changed momentum of that game in Hawthorn's favour with multiple blatantly incorrect umpiring decisions that directly resulted in Hawthorn goals. The rest is history. Had Fremantle won that game it would have been a Fremantle v West Coast grand final the first year the Victorian government had announced a pre-grand final public holiday. Make of that what you will.

Going down memory lane, Port were cheated out of a game against Footscray when we were wearing that purple and yellow heritage guernsey at the Dome.

Crows also robbed of a game against Dogs at the Dome where one umpire with links to Footscray paid something in the order of 14 free kicks to Footscray and at best one to the Crows.

Port were also robbed of a win against Carlton in the final game at Football Park (disgracefully biased final quarter umpiring to ensure Carlton won to make finals - that was the year the league banned Essendon and so ninth made finals - again make of that what you will), and there is also the game at Kardinia Park where Robbie Gray had his head ripped off in the goal square with no free kick paid and this denied Port a winning shot at goal from goal square in the final minute. This was not long after Dixon had been inexplicably called to play on whilst lining up for a set shot on goal.

Port were also robbed of a famous win against North Melbourne at the MCG, I think in 98 or 99, when Choco stormed the field straight at the umpires pointing his finger at them (imagine the suspension he would get from the wokeFL now). Port were blessed with one free kick in the second half of that game. It was an absolute disgrace.

There you go Rick.

Huh? We wore the PBs (with the 100 year SANFL badge) against the Dogs in 2007 at the Dome - the free kicks were 13-27 their way. We led by 8 points at half time, but lost by 20.

Michael Warner has another crack at AFL - Commission and executives

Michael Warner: AFL’s hypocrisy in era of identity politics is turning fans against one another

The AFL’s bosses have tied themselves in knots conforming to identity politics, moral grandstanding and radical left ideology, writes Michael Warner. It’s clear a majority of fans have come to resent it.

Only the permanently outraged would have taken offence when an AFL umpire attended a private, post-season “characters of the 2000s” party in an Osama bin Laden mask. Predictably, it triggered an investigation (and a one-match suspension) at AFL HQ where the game’s administrators have tied themselves in knots conforming to the era of identity politics, moral grandstanding and radical left ideology.

But recent world events and last year’s failed Voice referendum reflect how a growing majority have had enough of progressive lectures and the rise of divisive social agendas and their endless demands. Persistent Welcome to Country ceremonies, Pride rounds, pre-match knee-dropping and race-baiting doesn’t unite Australians – it creates a growing level of resentment, turning us against each other.
......................

Then there’s their love of the gambling dollar.
It was AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder who pushed the clubs to reduce their dependency on poker machine revenues, only to oversee a boom in the code’s lucrative relationship with sports betting companies.

that one might be the Essendon 2004 game where we wore magenta?

I recall Port getting robbed badly in a heritage guernsey, but if it was 20 years ago, I could be off the mark too. I was near certain it was against Footscray at the Dome.

Gee more memories flooding back, Port v North in Tassie, what was it 36 to 15 free kicks? Think i read this was the largest free kick discrepancy ever recorded. Also loved the 8 x 50m penalties the Hawks were given in a game (another record) against them down in Tassie. Most were dubious at best, it was game changing, a ridiculous free kick against Dougal Howard at the end sealed our fate.

Wasn’t Cotton On the same company that another high profile recruit was tied up with a few years ago, not sure who or which club though.
