Autopsy Practice Match, 2022: Carlton v St.Kilda

Seems the strategy is to take advantage of the 'stand' rule by having running players hit up a short target at half back and run aggressively to get return handball at pace and in space to kick beyond the zone or to a better target. This suits Hill & Sinclair, and occasionally Paton/Webster or a midfielder. It often takes multiple short kicks to generate the right player/circumstance to execute this but as skills and awareness improve it should work well. The more we can get it done in 1-2 short kicks (rather than 3-4), the more we will disrupt the opponent's defensive structures.

You draw the play towards the ball carrier too so clear space behind them.

Injuries did affect him for a long time at North and just meant he never got the continuity he needed.

Hopefully he can get a good run at it this year.

It was inconsistency and injury. He'd look like he was about to be Nick Riewoldt then get injured or go missing for 4 weeks and end up in the VFL. They lost patience in the end.

Been watching the game and don't get the concern at all. It's basically a training drill for both sides played down at Carlton at 10am on a Thursday. Very leisurely vibe. Good run around for the boys with literally nothing on the line.
Yep - it was a practice match - end of story.

If it is a known team rule then def side players should be there to cover if there is a turnover. But best laid plans... certainly Melb had a lot of overlap. Ratten likes wings who can run all day and be strong overhead (hence his interest in taller wings...trials with Battle, Jono Marsh, Wood now...and D Mac the new prototype). He likes burst players at half back (Hill, Sincs, Coff if he would use his jets). For me it is a sound strategy that, like with Melb last season, could click very quickly. Time will tell.

The biggest mystery is how best to use Roma & Paddy.

I think it was North too, look at how badly they managed Ben Brown, he was their best forward but as soon as he struggled for form or got injured they were keen to ditch him.

Now he is going great guns at Melbourne with a more professional and successful set up, the best move he ever made, he went from a wooden spoon team to a premiership team.

Wood is in the same boat as Brown, a talented forward that was badly managed by North, now he is as at a better club he has a chance to shine.

He doesn't have the pressure of being a key forward target like he did at North either, he can be the third or fourth forward target behind King, Membrey, Marshall and Sharman, he can slip under the radar and bob up with a few goals as the opposition defenders are focused elsewhere.

Disappointing to see that Byrnes didn’t attend a single centre bounce, and Clark only 6, despite Gresh, Jones and Crouch only seeing 23 between them.

Also intriguing that Byrnes played a big chunk of the VFL game afterwards, despite playing enough of the AFL game to notch 18 touches.

Seb being in there for the 2nd-most centre bounces is also interesting.

Maybe they figure he played by far the best footy of his career while playing almost exclusively in there, and as such they’re going to see if he can recapture that form.
Rekon I saw Ross sitting on Cripps a fair portion of the game

Disagree, he's good down back and found a spot that makes use of him. It's not what we got him for but he's at least earning part of his wage now. He had a couple of really really good games last year and he's now in our best 10 or so players IMO. It's annoying that we got him for the wing and it didn't work out but at least he's not a total bust now. Year one he looked like he shouldn't be getting selected most weeks.
What annoys me is that we don't have a great winger and Hill was that. Billings is quite good, but doesn't have the pace and line breaking. Dmacks a good defensive winger, but isn't able to accumulate as much as you'd like, etc. I think Hill was averaging around 25 at Freo.

"The biggest mystery is how best to use Roma & Paddy."
- Not such a mystery - Paddy to play about 60% game time - just like NicNat does. Give him a game off every 6 weeks to keep him fresh.
Marshall to swap between forward and ruck to spell Paddy.

DMac can take a contested mark and stays in the contest...Billings the same but not so strong in recovery. Wood have not seen enough..yet.
Kick the ball long if possible out of defence to one on one contest. Mark gets taken bring inside to the good users running off half back Sincs and Hill we then are looking at a deep penetrative inside 50 to King Membrey Snags Marshall without time for opp to set the protective def zone.

Just my thoughts on the game. First half was a game of nearly right. Ball bounced left we went right. There was a tap out in the centre that nearly went to Gresham on the burst who was two steps early...that sort of stuff.

Bobbled balls in centre went to Carlton...those that didn't were paid as free kicks to Carlton.

Thought Battle played well and Billings got his hands on it a bit and gave us some drive.

Whilst I am not a Ross hater his disposals do not seem to have a telling effect on the game....unlike Sincs impact.

Carlton run through the centre unopposed was a worry and rebound off half back is concerning. But as usual could not hit a target inside 50.

They seemed much more up and about than we did and Voss would have had them motivated to give a good show...the players too.

Usual problem for Carlton 8 stars and the rest are players called Joe.

We lost by a goal and we have all commented partly on how poorly we played at times.......food for thought...
Free kicks count one sided
Carl ruckman had a field day giving first use
We fumbled and lacked intensity
Byrnes had a mare
Gres and Patts first serious run in a year

Be interesting to see what changes next week whether Thessaly issues arise

I know Leo doesn't , that's why i said "Hypothetical "

Well hypothetically Leo could have a growth spurt & be our 199cm CHB.

You mentioned him as a replacement for Hill but he doesn’t have the physical abilities that are needed for that role.

Hill is exactly what we need at HB… we have more than enough other options on the wing anyway.

Campbell had the most hit outs of any player and apart from one shocking kick I thought Byrnes was good. Patts was very good too. He played higher up the ground and everything he touched seemed to turn out good. I think they also evened up frees to be nearly even but early Carlton were getting everything.

I think Cripps and Cerra are just a very good combination, Cripps would grab the ball and go and if he didn't Cerra just read the ball off him and took it away himself. Walsh might disrupt the synergy but that looks like one area Carlton could really improve in this year. Cripps has been ordinary for a couple of seasons and Walsh had to do it all in his absence. Get three firing and all of a sudden they are up there with some of the better midfield combos.

The wings and flanks are running players these days. Melbourne use their wingmen to fall back and block up space as defenders then sprint back to give a kick out option. Flanks line up on the edge of the square and run flat out towards the centre as soon as the ball goes up.

Hill really played as an old fashioned wingman that ran both ends but without much urgency running the defensive way. Most sides will play one or two offensive running defenders these day too. Johanissen types who break lines with pace are gold because if you hold the ball up you draw a whole line up towards the defenders and then behind them space opens up.

High half forwards then move up into that space and are one more kick away from goal. Melbourne, Richmond, Dogs etc have all used these plays. The chip mark game Ratts seems to like is the opposite, it's slower but more precise and relies on good disposal to achieve it. Perhaps we use a combination so that we can do what the ret of the comp does but we can control tempo and not run ourselves ragged.

What did you make of Clarke’s game? Watch 3 quarters and I think he is playing pretty well. If he can have sustained midfield minutes this year I think he will improve a lot

Clark isn’t getting any love here but I thought he was actually pretty promising. I think if it’s the first decent hit out of the year and you don’t play like Chris Judd you cop it on here.

Yep, I didn’t watch it on the day but reading the thread I thought he had a stinker. But he did some really nice things

Only had a stinker because he wasn’t up to match speed (duh first praccy match)

He willed us nearly across the line in the last. Just kept driving us forward.
