Seems the strategy is to take advantage of the 'stand' rule by having running players hit up a short target at half back and run aggressively to get return handball at pace and in space to kick beyond the zone or to a better target. This suits Hill & Sinclair, and occasionally Paton/Webster or a midfielder. It often takes multiple short kicks to generate the right player/circumstance to execute this but as skills and awareness improve it should work well. The more we can get it done in 1-2 short kicks (rather than 3-4), the more we will disrupt the opponent's defensive structures.
You draw the play towards the ball carrier too so clear space behind them.
