Review R23: The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Port Adelaide

How can the umpiring be so bad? Even before Rankine got KO'd the umpires had no control. And then, because they are so poor, they tried to take control of the game after the hit but made bad decision after bad decision only causing more anger and chaos.

Umpiring has never been better.........
Port were shafted in the first half, then in typical AFL fashion they had to make up free kicks in the second half to even up the ledger.

There’s also not a single port supporter this morning reflecting on his comments and feeling bad despite the win.

They won, they don’t care, and if anything his antics would have made it sweeter.

It is a no win move.

Nah. Look at the vitriol about Rachele from Port supporters after the game.

The u pricing was completely subpar we got free we shouldn’t have, things weren’t paid everywhere. And they had no control over the game.

Not awarding a free against Houston should be a sacklable offence for all 4

Looked at the Houston bump in slow motion and he was lining that up from a mile away. Had every intention to hit Rankine. Players were clearly tasked with roughing up Rankine from the beginning of the game
The frustrating thing for me is the hit is taking the focus off the AFL believing that umpiring is at a suitable level.

It's disgusting that four umpires didn't see anything wrong with it yet the CEO keeps sweeping it under the rug.

Houston will get punished but the AFL will continue to pat each other on the back for being hard on people causing concussions.

Next year they need to play Rash in midfield more like they promised and move a few more players in there like Taylor and Dowling. The Crouch, Soligo combo doesn't cut it.

Glad Laird isn't in there as much
I seriously believe if we had a one-touch player in there instead of Berry last night, we would've gotten a lot closer in the midfield battle

So many fumbles at critical points

All superstars who bleed for their club, no issue with them. We lost this game in the 2018 draft.

Not talking about their talent, that's undeniable. Talking about the flopping, the rustling of hair and faux tough guy shit. All three are pathetic humans, funny enough JHF seems to be the most bearable of the three.

This was another example of Nix's lack of tactical nous. We all knew the game would be won and lost in the midfield, but I didn't see too many changes happening in their during the duration of the game. Butters was racking up possies at will, but there never appeared to be an attempt to quell him. In fact, all I noticed was to revert back to the 'old guard' (Laird and Crouch) in the middle.
I can’t believe I’m doing this - but I’m going to defend Nicks a little bit here.

He didn’t revert to Laird in the middle when the chips were down. He stuck with giving Curtin and Taylor CBAs in the second half.

I’m the first one in the sack Nicks queue but to be fair, last night was the most I’ve seen him invest in the future. Which was the right thing to do.

while obviously what houston did was unnecessary and he'll cop his whack, if keane just takes the ****ing mark instead of double fisting for no reason it never happens.

also people melting over rachele during the week, ****ing hell. it's a joke. it's a laugh. like chardonnay and apricot slice. people whine about a lack of personality in sport and then go mental as soon as someone says or does something.
I received a phone call from a very close Port friend during the week and he said he took it "personally" (he has all of his teeth BTW).

It was blown way out of proportion in the media though.

It's a commentary on their lack of class. And last night proved Rachele right.

Pick 4 better be the second coming of Bont, or we are still no better.

We are still years away from finals! When Tex goes we will be bad again
If there is a tall CHB in the draft, we are more likely to draft him with our first pick. :$

ridiclous comment to call them pathetic humans, you don't even know them. you sound like a port supporter.

Any supporter base would be the same including us.

Seemed like we barely touched the footy after Rankine went off, and the lack of leadership as you say was clear.

Having a third year player carry on like Rachelle did is also a symptom of that.

Good
Few worked hard in Dawson ,Crouch etc but absolutely loved Worrells game especially in real pressure situations.
Bad
Nicks merry men highlighted by no idea of centre square structure or ability to change the game.
umpires in 2 nd half ,sucked in by floppers and nasty crowd.
UGLY
Well you cannot get any worse than that deliberate head on smash on a stationary player with
only eyes on ball.
Doesn't matter how well Isaac recovers or doesnt ,the result could be diabolical and not only ruin someones football future or recurring health but actually worse.
Lets not joke about how bad Port crowd was in booing a man that was knocked out un conscious as that defies us supporters as actually being human beings .
Didn't think I could dislike that team or coach or supporters anymore than previously did.

It's a commentary on their lack of class. And last night proved Rachele right.
This is the pertinent point, what Rachele said before the game is rather a moot point, the fact remains its 100% true.

The truth hurts. It doesnt change with a win overnight.

Port are despised not because they are good, but because they are mostly feral degenerate supporters.

Look at their class, wishing it was Rachele that was hit instead and also the racial comments made about Rankine too.

I hate this port team with a passion.

At least Houston being out for the finals campaign means straight sets is a strong possibility.

Ditto to hating this port team. I also loathe their supporters. Booing Rankine off and cheering the bloke that caused it shows their true feral colours. I hope nothing goes right for them for the remainder of the year and they go out in straight sets. Again.

All these people calling for a mentor for Nicks

Just sack Nicks and hire the mentor

Secondly our backroom is as stacked as our midfield

Adam Kelly FTW
I'm not against sacking Nicks, but is there any evidence that a different coach would be able to achieve better results with this player group?

Brad Scott hasn't improved Essendon, Norf have gone backwards under Clarkson, Hardwick hasn't improved Gold Coast.

Sometimes we need to accept that the players are at fault here - it's a very young & inexperienced team. Oh... and the lack of ANY A-grade midfielders is killing us.

My take on the umpiring was that Port came out with a clear plan to exert physically. That didn’t work and the free kick count was a major consequence of the plan.

Umpires see the count and start evening things up, not paying clear frees for us and them getting the rub of it. Rankine KO’d and not even a free kick?

The frustration and anger from us was pretty clear and we lost focus. In an effort to keep control the umps paid everything against us.

I’m not blaming the umpires for the loss, but that game was appallingly officiated.
