On replay, I think anyone thinking Treacy was "garbage" is being pretty harsh or has way too high an expectation for a 2nd KPF.

Treacy should have kicked two goals, apart from that, he lost maybe one contest the whole game (due to a questionable free kick) but otherwise halved every aerial contest. He did his job.

The game we got from him on the weekend is just about what we are going to get every week for the next 4+ years
He was ranked in the bottom players for champion data.

I think there's a big perception issue here. I was watching last years game against Adelaide last week after someone here made a comment on it (unrelated to Walters) and there was one moment in Q1 where Walters got the ball after a marking contest, had no prior and Doedee (?) jumped right into his back and pinned him over the ball as a result with no real chance to get rid of it. The umpires call...HTB. Then Piggy chimes in on the commentary saying "Walters needs to stop playing for frees" FFS.

Umpires are regularly derelict in paying Walters due free kicks. Whether you think that's justified because of previous history (hint: it's not, umpires are there to adjudicate the rules, not have preconceptions), a lot of opposition players probably know they're going to get a lot of leeway when it comes to targetting Walters. This stacks the odds against him, especially given his size.

It's a perception issue that Walter's creates for himself. if a player like him enters every contest with the transparent intent of trying to manufacture a free rather than win the ball, you make the umpires job extremely difficult even if you want to adjudicate fairly. It's not even about past history, his staging is not well disguised. It does give opposition players alot of leeway, and it does stack the odds against him, but it's entirely his fault. I'm pretty happy Walters doesn't get rewarded until he stops doing performance art whenever he gets near the ball.

Jordan Clark with his career best game, game #1 at Freo, just quietly.. after going quiet for a whole ass third quarter.

Says it all about champion data doesn’t it. Treacy wasn’t at his best by any means yesterday, but is there a more structurally important player in the team? When we put the ball inside 50 (especially when we inevitably revert to bombing it in aimlessly) he provides a contest every time and brings it to ground. He runs around like a maniac tackling opposition defenders and even if he’s not always successful, at least leaves a good solid dent on them in the tackle. I’d say Doodee and Murray were sore this morning after 4 quarters of Treacy flinging himself around.
The set shot in the 4th was very disappointing as he’s previously been shown to be a decent set shot.
However for a 19 year old key forward off the rookie draft he’s tracking fine and should be better for the run next week.

Should also note Rachele with 23.8 ranking points, I think is the 2nd highest ever for a debut. But I'd need that confirmed from CD (as I'm not across the impact any changes to the rating may have on past scores).

Hope so bud! We really need him to develop into the second KPF role. Would love to see a debut for Amiss soon when he's ready.

Shows how he lifted in the 4th with the game on the line as well which is a great sign.

As ugly as the third was, it couldn't have gone better for them. As soon as they came off the boil our game got back on top.

If we had made the most of our chances in the first... Adelaide would have been talked about really fighting out the game after letting Freo get the jump on them in the first. A brave effort to turn a ten goal deficit into a three goal loss.

Unfortunately I worry that the added contest and intensity might take a physical toll. If we had a better lead we would have chipped it around and saved the bruises.

Oh well, next weekend.

This is the exact perception I'm talking about. People see it when perhaps it's not there. I look at any number of incidents when commentators say he was "playing for the free" and in watching it carefully on replay there's no way he was. It happens a lot.

At the end of the day, the umpires are there to adjudicate the rules. Full stop. Not some pre-conceived story.

I'm a fan of JL but his approach to the elite young talent does sh*t me. Erasmus sounds like he's done everything right, he's dominating for Peel as well in the practice matches and is clearly close. There is clearly some kind of 'give guys who have been around longer first crack approach', regardless of the obvious talent disparity. It's blindingly obvious Banfield is depth at best and that's all he'll ever be, regardless of how good a bloke he is.

You just know that Erasmus is going to have play for Peel next week before getting a look in (after not playing on the weekend), then the Derby will be too big an occasion to debut in or something.

It's frustrating
100% agree! I don't know what the crows situation is for smaller forwards but Rachelle's class and clean pick up was clearly reflective of being a top pick.
Erasmus may not have a debut as clean or monumental as his, but he surely would have to be an upgrade on Banfield. Or at least break even.

I love that everyone is talking about our weak midfield when we literally went in a man short, naming 8 backs instead of the usual 7, initially I thought this was so we could swing Cox forward, but that never occurred, also Switowski was named as a midfielder and in the last qtr he showed everyone why, he was electric.

His kicking and defensive side is lacking apparently. That's why he is being held back.
I still wish we would increase our midfield rotation though. I imagine quite a few of our midfielders could have managed to do what Banfield did forward as well as offer more quality midfield depth.
