Our game style last year was built off turnovers and go or locking the ball in fwd50. We aren’t doing either.

If you don’t lock the ball in or make it hard for the opposition to move the ball then you’ll have goals kicked against you no matter how good your defence is.

Bring back Frampton as the lockdown defender so Moore, Howe and Quaynor can intercept. Give a rocket to the forwards about pressure and not letting the ball rebound back quickly.

Our stoppage clearance and contested numbers are fine.

So I’ll get on my hobby horse that I’ve been on for years. wtf has the club not drafted a key forward in forever. Cloke might have been the last one. We got a flag last year with a mid sized average forward line, am I happy about that, I’m beyond happy but now we are seeing the problem with not having one and the age of our team catching up. We are the cats from last year except they had a forward line.

Finn to stay in next week.
Dean out Frampton in.
I’m his biggest fan but AJ out and I’ll say Reef but he’s not the answer. Might as well try Begg or Steene as Freddy is injured.
Titch in and leggy out. He hasn’t sighted it this year.

Not much else we can do really. Unless they pull a shock and play someone like Tj next week but that’s not flys way.

I know they’ll be vile hatred posted about AJ because there always is how about just put him as an in or out and not get personal as some do. It’s what I hate most about this board.
I’m fairly sure we had the debate recently of whether King would make us a better team, but many here were more satisfied with Frampton….

Trying to win a flag galvanises teams and supporter bases. I don't feel that worried that we've lost because I got this hangover happening. Every way I look at it,I can cop this cause we won it last year. We had 2 seasons for the ages. Maybe you just can't keep that up. I think when you know you can do it after you actually do it, complacency sets in and then when you fall behind you start to go oops we are not really doing it why not. We can. But we aren't. Suddenly 40 points behind.
We can steady the ship. This obviously isn’t our brand.

That said geeze supporters can be fickle. Since 2018 our results have been
18- lost gf by a kick
19- lost prelim by a kick
20- lost semi (well beaten)
21- 2nd last
22- lost prelim by a kick
23- won the big dance

That’s an amazing record any way you put it. We’ve all known there’s a small cliff coming with our ageing list like Geel. Like Geel we snagged that flag before it came.

The issues we’ve all discussed on here and been aware of for some time is the lack of first round draft talent to replace those ageing stars. Through high finished or terrible trading we haven’t had access to top talent other than nick in some time.

At some point that’s going to catch up with us. Teams have highs and lows, no team stays up forever.

We won our flag. There’s plenty of time left in this season to right the ship, but this team is not a dynasty team, and we’ve all known this.

Just back from the game. Obvious lack of hunger. We are off by a few percent and it shows. How many times did our handballs and kicks not clear incoming opposition players?

Second week in a row that junk time goals made the scoreline look a bit more respectable.

Like me, think that the players are still basking in the 23 premiership.
They think to win we just have to Show Up and don’t Try hard

They look they rather be somewhere not at the Footy

Irrelevant- effort is effort.
Without context statistics are irrelevant.

I didn’t see players spreading the same way Sydney did when we won possession. I didn’t see players on the move heading into contests like Sydney’s did. I did however see defenders and mids trailing their opponents time and time again, while forwards didn’t work hard enough to get in front and provide a target when we were attempting to exit our defensive half, instead looking for a cheap possession out the back.

Looking at the stats today this one in particular paints a somewhat messy picture, there's a lot of red and white there and the top two black and white entries were forwards.

Coupled with the fact that we had 14 players that went significant periods without touching the ball.
Fwd: Elliott, AJ, Bobby, Brodie, Schultz, McCreery
MF: Crisp, Lipinski & both wings Sidey & Daicos
B: Howe, IQ, Markov, Dean

Great post.

The difficulty for supporters (myself included) though is the completely disjointed manner in which we’re playing. That may arise due to time catching up to some of our better players, however it doesn’t account entirely for the breakdown in structures and apparent unpreparedness that seems to have afflicted each and every player on the list, bar a small few.

Yes great post.

It seems though clubs feel they can go back to back. It’s unusual we had Hawthorn and Richmond do it over the last decade, but clubs tend to go for it.

With our age profile, we should be bringing through more kids. We are premiers, so the club would have credits. Not sure how many of us expect to go back to back.

Agree. I'm glad that both Fly and Pendles have called out this aspect in particular as something that sticks out to them.

There are quite a few going in early with predictions of doom (as per the standard BF process).

2 bad games and the team has been written off.

It's a long season you fickle mo-fos. :)
More how Shit we are playing then Losing

Again your point is irrelevant to my original post, where the poster was implying we lacked effort by not running.

Our tackling needs work. Players are now finding a way to release the ball and get it into space or keep it moving. The last 2 seasons we have been the ones to play the ball to space with the expectation that players will be on the move. The tables were turned last night with Sydney hitting to space where they could because they knew they had more pace on the game, while we tried to play in tight and, due to the pressure, turned it over.
We where bad Tacklers last year as well

That's not right. Neither defend like we do by pushing up so high & leaving dangerous opposition forwards unopposed.
Checkers & AJ had opponents right on their hammer all night. McDonald had a field day because we gave him all the space he could ever want. May gave him no space last week & McDonald was a non issue for Melbourne even though they lost the game. If we don't start making a contest a priority in our back half we won't turn this around. The really frustrating thing with our tall backs is that they aren't intercepting & aren't involved in score chains anymore. So how about playing accountable defence? We can't concede over 100 points per game & expect a different result. Sydney & GWS are both playing accountable defence & then their mids who flood back to help transition the ball out & into attack.
Murphy is a big out. He was so selfless.

I don’t understand logic of omitting Mitchell but making Macrae sub. He’s a grinder who needs to build impact over an extended period. He’s not a burst player.

And for two weeks in a row it has been wrong call to play Dean over Frampton, Johnson over McInnes and Markov over Noble.

Our coaches and selectors are in as much of a slump as our players.

This.

Derek’s rating went down a notch after the psycho weeks. As have fly’s selection skills

We chose Ash over jai Newcombe in the mid season draft…

And Fly chose not to play reef, macrae and noble, despite all being in red hot form… plus Billy, who I’m sure would’ve done a better job

I was contemplating not posting any more because it aint healthy and this may be my last post, see how things go, certainly in the short term.

The fact is just look back the last 2 years and you can see the problems, yeah we won the flag, but we constantly did it winning 1 to 1.5 good qtrs and kept teams in the game, all those close wins at 50% would have us in the bottom 8.

We do have NO elite KPP at all and nothing coming through, Moore 1:1 is a shocker and teams have worked him out.

Maynard, JDG, Crisp, IQ and Howe are all burst straight line runners and suffer terribly in close or under pressure

Our forward line - we rely on a 30+ ex VFA player who is serviceable at best but lets face it any team we play who has 1 elite KPP is enough to do the job on us if all we do is bomb it. Have a look in the short term already and a big forward has kick at least 4-5 goals

Our smalls are all flashy and give no pressure, for too long now Beau has given us glimpses but doesn't get enough of the ball, needs to go back in the 2's for a few weeks or more to get more of the ball.

There are at least 5-6 of the senior guys that are just about done (you know who they are) we just got caught so many times last night looking for a second option rather than moving the ball down the ground quickly - thats where our smalls could have the advantage

Murphy needs to decide if he continues, lets face it, he is one hard bump from finishing up.

Nick cant do it on his own, he'll be burnt out by 25.

We dont have athletes in our side, looking at GWS & Sydney it seems like they 13-14 185cm-190cm runners who use the ball so much better than we do

The game plan my God, yeah we got away with it until opposition start to copy or work us out, we get sliced up so easily now and we just let it happen

May as well start blooding some of the lesser likes and see how it goes but doing the same thing over and over is the definitIon of insanity

Unfortunately playing kids and coming in the bottom 4 is useless this year with us trading our first round, just like we did a few years back.

Anyway time to jog off and look for greener pastures in the world.

Good luck everyone and lets how by some miracle we can turn this around.

Apologies for any spelling or Grammar errors, I couldn't be bother proof reading it :)

Great post Stormskye. The reason the 2023 meant so much to me was we did it with an aging team and without a team of number 1 or high end draft picks like GWS, Carlton or Melbourne. Multiple years of not having access to such picks would ultimately hamstring us and as early as this year. Schultz although a good player, alone his signing is not going to improve us significantly. Supporters are not being fickle, however, with success becomes an expectation of consistency and when players stop doing what made the team consistent, supporters are well entitled to ask questions particularly when we invest our time and $$$ for multiple memberships

2s is plural (not possessive - therefore no apostrophe) but you've apologised so I've moved on...
