Live at the game I felt that we were indecisive with every decision that was made in the first half, very disjointed and lacking confidence.
As the game wore on they got better with the ball in hand, but the defence held up pretty well all night.
Just wondering if the team has been over practicing the defensive actions for the last couple of weeks since it has been poor that the offensive side has slipped a little.
Once they get it all to click we will be a force again.

Honestly think Joe being back and getting in the groove again will solve a lot of ills. He was playing that well in the first part of the season and will straighten us up immensely. Seemed reasonably rusty and still had 5 shots at goal yesterday.

I enjoyed watching the game. Less kicking to a contest on the wing, more attempts to run and pass through the middle and the wings. To me that makes it more of a spectacle, and I feel a more varied attack gives us a better chance to win more finals games, and hopefully the big one.

Definitely a clear plan to try and play a more kick mark uncontested style of play last night.
In fact we won the uncontested possession stat last night 233-197, which I reckon at a guess without looking was the first time this year.

Just did a bit of fact checking and we have won the uncontested stat against NM and WC not surprisingly.
And the Giants and the Hawks which is a little surprising.

That skinny dark haired umpire (Number 12) with no chin has it in for us. Small man syndrome much. Some of his calls were so putrid I could smell them through the tellie and I have COVID at the minute so the nose is not what it normally is.
yep . . .wasn't it him that started the whole "arms out = a 50" BS by penalising Andrews however many rounds back. Public enemy #1 for lions supporters I'd say

Can’t believe some of the negativity around the performance. We were all over them - didn’t convert like we should have otherwise would have been a flogging. They kicked 8 goals and that includes the rubbish free for Kings first goal. A questionable second free to King, the deliberate against McCluggage and the McKenzie dropped mark.
I’m with you Jonno. The way I saw it, the first half was an umpiring fiasco. The players looked confused. A poor or iffy decision stalls momentum. Gifted goals just sap your will. We butchered some kicks but we should have been in front at half time and saints should have had only two goals on the board.
I just rewatched the second half and we slaughtered them. Their goals were fortunate and against the flow. The weirdest thing is that we didn’t win by ten goals. Take their extremely lucky ones out and they’ve kicked four for the match. Add a few of our uncharacteristically numerous misses (and lineball recalls) and we’re miles ahead.
So we’ve had a six day split and a trip west, we’ve come up against a top four contender who are well rested and we’ve beaten them comprehensively, the margin only reflecting our poor kicking for goal.
I only saw it on telly but the scrappiness of the game looked like it was caused by our change in tactics. We didn’t allow big spaces to open up, we played close and our midfield took a defence-first approach. I think we nailed it.
Ps. I think Kiddy has the look of a future champion of the game. Skinny but makes up for it with his superb tackling technique. Brave as a lion and his left foot is dynamite. Starce is a gun.

And the most pleasing sight was when we switched it acoss the back to open the Stanley st side up , I think in the third or was it the first?
Although the support appeared a little slow to react and move across , it did come.
We were willing to use the space out there, so good.
hoping we can keep this trend going.

I left at this point and went home. Wasn’t hanging around for that rubbish. Umpires are destroying the game, getting to the point where I won’t part with hard earned money to watch umpires do what they do.

Look I’m loathe to bag umpires, I’m a community ump, I took it up relatively late in life, post playing and coaching and I genuinely love putting back into the game…a game that is genuine trouble at regional / rural level. Having said that I get more confused by watching games each week and the variation in decisions from week to week, umpire time umpire. With my umps we are a relatively small association so we all know how we umpire and we generally have an understanding of what each will do. It was interesting in the lead up to this season with the new interpretations the only thing that really changed was the interpretation of holding the ball with regard to prior opportunity and if you followed the other changes what they were trying to do was speed up the play and stop packs forming. We decided not to be over the top with the dissent rule, rather we would apply common sense. Ironically a week later we received an email from the AFL Umpiring department telling us to go “hard” on it. Go figure.

The difference between us and them is that all of us have played to a reasonable level. We have that knowledge of a player. The blokes running around in the AFL simply don’t have that. They can run like whippet’s but they just lack that knowledge.

I find myself loathe to watch games on TV because you can’t get the right angle, but last nights umpiring efforts in many regards was bewildering. The Hughie goal overturn was just rubbish. In my own games I know I’ve ****ed up when I blow the whistle and know one knows which teams free it is…it doesn’t happen anymore fortunately…yet I see it every week in the AFL.

We were fortunate to win even though we should have won by more. I actually think we are much better on a bigger track so I’m keen to see us live at the MCG in a few weeks.

There is still much improvement there.

Reasonable set of highlights. Can laugh about it now, but what was Adams thinking at 1:20 in the clip. Darcy Gardiner looks like he can’t work it out.

Finally caught the replay.

We are going to beat most teams if we bring the same level of pressure each week. The connection between our mids and forwards along with some bad shots at goal meant a smaller win than expected (I figured 30-40 points), but we still had 28 shots in a game where things didn't 'click'.

I fully expect us to gain a lot from the bye and think we're every chance to beat Melbourne after the bye if we can find that synergy.

Rayner, Berry, McCluggage, Neale, Andrews got my votes.

I like the versatility that the three talls give us. When we locked it i50, seeing Oscar floating back around 60/70m out for the dump kick. We looked much better defensively. I still don't think we setup well for defending kickouts though.

I thought we were better in that area this week but definitely something we need to continue to chip away at. Having Berry and Robertson on the field really helps in that area.

On Berry - how good is it seeing him play so well. Really hope he can stay injury free.

It was Nuney. It brought a tear to my eye

Yes! Every time they were able to get a few easy kicks with noone near them and were able to get to the 50m line with ease. When we are kicking out, we have noone getting those easy 30m kicks along the boundary

There are a few of us, myself included, who have been lamenting the lack of a rotation policy at the club, but looking at it, there may actually be one, just slightly more 'dropping' than 'resting' players.

Prior got a run at the expense of MRobbo.
Dev getting a run at the expense of Cal.

Tommy Berry the next obvious candidate for a spell in the 1s, though a few others could be considered.

Had a quick look at the Saints board.Apparently it was injuries and umpires that caused them to lose.Umpiring caused by crowd pressure.
honestly both sides can whinge about umps.
They are just that bad with frees now.. Who knows what they pay and when.
So many goals each week from a 50-50 free.. Then 2 mins later the same thing not paid..
