Review Round 13, 2023 - Hawthorn vs. Brisbane Lions

It hurt my soul to see Charles sprinting to cover players. Now I don't know if they were his opponents and he gave himself a 20m handicap, but I suspect not.

Hippy did well today, some nice set shots there.

Hugh was playing really well. One entry into the 50 was a bit too short but otherwise some good tackling pressure, and disposal.

Dev turned up to play. Did really well early on but then quietened. Will have more opportunity to show his worth while Hugh is out.


Hawks must pencil this match in each year with glee. Annoying stuff.

We need to clone Wilmot and the energy he brings.

But most importantly we have to stop being a considered, mature team. The Hawks looked like that but they had mongrel to spare. We don't.

Ridiculous that it took 3 quarters to put a player on Newcombe. It doesn't take a master coach to see that he was absolutely murdering us in the middle of the ground.

Shameful performance. Even more shameful that the team did not really after what happened to McLuggage.

Gunston needs to go. Rich is sadly cooked. Time to reward more players in the reserves. Dev the only highlight today, but knowing Fagan he'll be dropped in two weeks and probably leave for WA due to lack of opportunity.

That game should be the defining moment when Fagan and the coaching staff say - NO MORE GUNSTON. Sadly for a club legend NO MORE RICH. You can also put a line through Prior for now. Daniher just went back to bad habits and wanted to take mark of the year instead of leading. Play Hipwood at Full Forward. Least he is quick and can lead. Every time we look up to kick into the forward 50 we just see Daniher and Gunston standing there.

Why did Lester get dropped? Get him back in the side. Berry needs to wake up. Running around doing nothing all season. Bailey one of my fave players has been average most of season and seems to save his best for the Gabba. He needs to perform away from home.

Soul destroying! Chris Fagan is a really nice man but doesn't seem ruthless enough to be a premiership coach. To salt the wound thought Robertson who has been ignored for 2 years was really good today. He and Lohman will be really good players no doubt for their respective teams next year.

Don't think we are good enough to be carrying Gunston and Rich, and if those two play next week I won't be watching the game. I need to get a life but this has ruined my weekend, dont think I'd feel any better if we had just scrambled home either, was truly excited about this season.

Curious if/how Fagan will brush this one off. I think real genuine questions need to be asked of him and the squad. Are we simply not quick enough to beat even the bottom teams on the spread? That’s where it was lost. All Hawthorn had to do was centre the ball at half back, wait for the spread across the ground and off they went.. lions trailing far behind them. Once they worked that out we never had a sniff.

Are some of our older blokes costing us more than they give? Gunston clearly offers forward leadership, but is it worth it if his man every week runs off him and essentially plays free? He can’t chase or pressure, which goes against the entire philosophy of our forward group.

Rich too. Great kick, tough at it, But too slow. Watch his man anytime we turn it over going forward.

I won’t pretend I have the answers. I’d Just like to see Fagan listen, cop the incoming heat and respond. We can’t continue to just give mulligans and push forward with the same plan.

Rayner, Bailey, berry should be dropped until they find form in VFL.

That’s 6 of the best 22 who are probably making this team worse. Sure they might do a good thing here and there but over a course of a game they are net negatives.

Bailey, every time he got it he turned it over. Love him as a player but he’s on thin ice at the moment

Berry hardly sighted at all.

I don’t think Gardiner was as bad as some are saying, he was good in the first half, only came a bit unstuck in the second half - but the ball was coming in a million times so what can you do.

Dev keeps his spot easily, kept us in it at times

I really don’t know what happened there in the second half to be honest. Our pressure was great in the first half, but the second half we just gave them all the space in the world. Why? F*ck knows.

Agree. Bailey is quickly turning into one of the most over rated players in the AFL. Gunston has been very poor and Rich is just too slow.

Berry and Bailey probably deserved to dropped, even for a week. The problem is that Fagan'& Co won't do it when it needed to happen. Weeks go by and it's the same shit over and over.

I think our best team has Ah Chee playing Prior's role and Rich replaced by Coleman. Zorko back in for Dev (who was pretty good).

Called it 2 weeks ago, didn’t think we would win this game or Vs Crows.

Haven’t played well since 3/4 time againts the blues.

Signs were there vs dons and GC.


Same old, same old. A 5-8 team who will bow out of finals.

Completely smashed in effort, endeavour, system and coaching today. Talent and turnover only reason we stayed in it, lucky it wasn’t 50 points.

Mids deplorable.

Off the bye, mcg, fixture - there’s always an excuse, fact is we just arnt very good.

Readjust your expectations people.

Question. When we leave the Gabba to play in Victoria, do we change the lineup thinking its a tough game so we better change things.....or do we leave the team and gameplan that is winning, at home?

I confess I don't take too much notice of teams selected as a rule, just assume selection committee know what they are doing..

It’s clear we’re not a high possession side, but there’s different game styles required for different games.

Allowing Hawthorn to basically walk around us with handball chains was one of the most disappointing (and predicable) things I’ve seen from the Lions in ten years.

There just has to be adjustments made at some point. We need to get more run out of our players. More handballs and more providing small leads. The long kicks require contested marks - that hasn’t fired for a long time now.

Same old problems,ball use was horrendous,turned it over multiple times under zero pressure.Tackling was pathetic (again) there are only a handful of players who can actually stick a tackle,others teams know it so they don’t even bother worrying about it. Prior was terrible, Andrews back to his lazy,slack ways,just runs around without an opponent and provides little defensive pressure. Berry only goes when he feels like it,Bailey the same and Rayner can’t seem to play out a full game. Gunston and Rich have to be dropped. We will finish top 8 at best,nowhere near enough four quarter performers to challenge for a flag.

Daniher just couldn’t get his hands to cooperate with each other inside fifty. So many almost marks that just didn’t go his way. First game since round three without a goal and shit happens. Still took some decent marks up the ground but the kicking from halfback was horrendous.

I may be completely wrong but I feel like Robertson was part of the spread issue in the midfield. It happened against Port and it happened here with him as a winger both times and so unless he is spending most of his time on-ball I don’t see why Sharp isn’t used instead. Obviously not one person makes a team but it feels like it’s not a coincidence.

Just sucks that it seems like a performance like this always happen where we just refuse to match the pace and just essentially get steamrolled through the ground.
