Just on SEN
Petracca has 4 broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and a small puncture to his lung.
And he came back on!!
Awful to see that carnage for a champion of the comp but what the hell were Melbourne thinking?

Collingwood

Jack Crisp: A

Was massive in the middle with 27 disposals and six clearances. Easily won his direct matchup with Clayton Oliver as he looked to expose him out the front of stoppages. Took home the Neale Daniher Trophy for best afield.

Jeremy Howe: A

Allowed to play loose with Daicos tag and was absolutely everywhere aerially and linking up to create offence from half back. Finished with eight marks, 24 disposals and a trademark hanger.

Josh Daicos: A

Huge game on the outside as the Pies controlled the wings all game. Had 33 disposals, 10 marks and six clearances.

Brayden Maynard: A

Copped the Boos all day from Melbourne fans but was absolutely massive in defence. Finished with 21 disposals.

Will Hoskin-Elliott: B+

Massive up forward playing primarily on Steven May, kicked two goals to go with eight marks.

Harvey Harrison: B+

Such a crafty little player. Kicked three goals and is beginning to etch his name into Collingwood’s starting 23.

Steele Sidebottom: B+

Wound back the clock playing primarily on young Demon Caleb Windsor. Had disposals.

John Noble: B+

Big bounce back game.

Nathan Kreuger: B+

First game all year and really stood up as a dangerous tall forward option with three goals.

Fin Macrae: B+

Really important game in the midfield with a goal and five clearances. Perhaps the best performance of his young career.

Patrick Lipinski: B+

Darcy Moore: B

Really strong aerially in defence.

Charlie Dean: B

Another Pie that probably had the best game of his young career. Looked really settled as a tall defender.

Darcy Cameron: B-

Certainly didn’t win his battle with Max Gawn but still tried all day and kicked a mssive goal.

Nick Daicos: C+

Was tagged by Alex Neal-Bullen around the ground and had just 15 disposals, one goal and seven clearances. Eventually was subbed off in the fourth quarter after copping a kick to the shin. While his influence was nullified, coaches will have to ponder whether it’s worth tagging him given how good Collingwood’s defence looked with a spare.

Isaac Quaynor: C+

Lachie Schultz: C+

Bobby Hill: C

Lachie Sullivan: C

Billy Frampton: C-

Played primarily as a forward and kicked a goal. Looks much better down back though.

Oleg Markov: C-

Did some nice things but also had a few mistakes.

Beau McCreery: C-

Jack Bytel: N/A

Came on for Nick Daicos in the last term.

I hope their Docs get put under the microscope. It was obvious that was a serious injury and they should never have let him back on the ground.

I’d assume it’s pretty standard for blokes with suspected broken ribs to be given the opportunity to resume if they think they’re able. We didn’t with Pendles earlier in the year but I have thought it’s reasonably common. Not sure how they’d identify the other internal injuries at the ground.

So anyone reckon Beau’s kick to Frampton was deliberate? I thought not as it happened but the slow mo ground level replay made me think twice. Hope he claims it😀

I enjoyed the heated discussion between Dunstall and King yesterday evening. King was saying that Melbourne had a duty of care to protect Petracca and should not have had him play on. Dunstall disagreed because 'we have the best medicos' and if they thought he was good to go, then they shouldn't be questioned.

Which brings me to the question. How are the club medicos selected and are they equipped to make a decision on a player's wellbeing in a very short time? If this wasn't an AFL game, would a medical decision be different?
A lot of the time, in match situations, the docs biggest indicator is the subjective view of the player themselves, especially with a Petracca-type situation. So you can't hang the docs.

The idea the "we have the best medicos" is a bit flawed, just a bit of commentary blather. For a start, best compared to what or whom?

If docs started subbing out every player who copped a decent knock to the body because they might have busted ribs, well, we would need a few extra subs.
He's tough - I'll give him that.
But seriously, WTF is wrong with Melbourne's medical staff. He never looked right to get back out there. I can't imagine us ever putting a player in that position now
Hard to know what you don't know. We played Coxy last year with an internal injury which wasn't diagnosed until he woke up the next day with a belly full of internal bleeding.

I don't remember seeing Cox crumpled over and throwing up on the ground though, which is what Petracca was doing during the quarter time break.

It wasn't known Cox had sustained the injury until later, but Petracca was obvious something was more severely wrong and I don't understand how they didn't get him to hospital for scans earlier. The man was clearly in a lot of distress.

You and me are both at the "I don't understand" level of knowledge when it comes to Petracca. All clubs have put players back on when injured, not knowing the severity, on the back of the player saying they are right to go, or they will give it a try.

A bit of a spew is hardly a medical indicator that it's ambulance time.

Hope that Christian Petracca has a speedy recovery and I feel for him and his family who obviously do not like seeing their son hurt like that with what looks like a serious injury.
I am also so glad the Collingwood players did not target him when he was back on the ground, despite what some of the Fox commentators were suggesting the pies players do.

Lingy was definitely in the "Pies should test him out" camp.

Melbourne chose to put a player back on who should never have come back on. He's fair game. They played Brayshaw for 2 years more than they should have. Old manic would've gone straight for his ribs. This isn't junior footy

See, id be more of the sneaky/rat type player.

Dont target him if he is playing no good to ensure he stays out longer ie effectively one man down.

If he plays half decent.... target him.

Its a Ballarat thing

Not even a quick flick to the ribcage. I do like your line of thinking though

A bit of a testament to the hardness and courage of Petracca that he did go back on. Superstar.

When you've got a bloke like Petracca unable to move or walk for that long - you can be pretty confident it's bad.

With how lame he was, it was better for us for him to play out the game and continue to avoid contact and contests.
I don't think Lingy is a 3D chess kinda guy, but my respect for him would rise if he was of the mind that the Pies would be better off if Trac stayed on, so he was encouraging us to test him out so he would be taken off, and thus produce a better situation for Melbourne.

There were also a handful of occasions at ball ups where ANB just wrapped arms around Naics and he should've received a free kick. It could easily have been a low to mid 20's disposal game, if the umps gave Naics the Charlie Curnow treatment.
It still would likely have been a low-mid 20’s game if he’d played the last quarter. Nick having 15 disposals 7 clearances and a goal in 68% tog isn’t anything for Neal Bullen to be bragging about in terms of quelling Nicks output, particularly given the attention he was getting from all of Melbournes players was allowing our other mids to get off the chain.
