We need key forwards that kick goals, can’t rely on just Larkey. Pink doesn’t kick them cos he’s playing out of position

Sellers is the one to persist with. His 2 games we were terrible in delivering forward as we spent most of the time kicking sideways while the Cats and Hawks backline rolled back. A mule wouldn’t get a kick in the fwd line those games

His 2 games were terrible because he spent most of his time hanging out the back going 4th up in marking contests rather than getting on his bike to lead into space or make multiple leads. He was his own worst enemy.

Collingwood won't get any relief on the injury front this side of the bye, but the club doesn't expect to lose Nick Daicos this Sunday after he was subbed out on King's Birthday. Ash Johnson, Ed Allan and Tew Jiath were included in the 26-man squad on Monday, with the latter the carryover emergency. Reef McInnes collected 17 touches in his return game from concussion, while Harry DeMattia mounted a case for a debut in the coming weeks with his best showing yet at VFL level. Wil Parker collected 18 disposals after being dropped following a couple of weeks at senior level. – Josh Gabelich

Last week's sub: Jack Bytel (replaced Nick Daicos)

The Kangas will lose Wil Dawson (shoulder) for the foreseeable future, but defensive reinforcements are coming. Miller Bergman (hamstring) will be available this weekend, while Griffin Logue (knee) should make his long-awaited comeback through the VFL next weekend. Riley Hardeman (23 disposals, 10 marks) will be an option for Sunday's clash with the Magpies, having been among the best in the VFL. Tyler Sellers (16 disposals, seven marks, three goals) could be a chance, while Zane Duursma is set to return from being managed. Either of their inclusions could see Toby Pink return to the backline, having played forward recently. Colby McKercher (foot) remains another week away, with Charlie Lazzaro (36 disposals, seven clearances) and Hugh Greenwood (29 disposals, 13 clearances, eight tackles) the pick of the bunch from the midfield in the reserves. – Riley Beveridge

Last week's sub: Eddie Ford (replaced Wil Dawson)

Daicos would run him into the ground by Qt. George is a contested beast, not a runner. If daicos plays, it’s a tag with Shiels or Simpkin h2H as Jy is one of the best runners at the club and can make Daicos accountable defensively.
As someone else mentioned George at stoppages Shiels in general play.

I would send tucker to tag daicos if he plays. Not sure we have many others with the tank.

Maybe split it into two halves. Tucker for one and Shiels for the other. Not sure I would want either of them at center bounces though. Maybe Powell and Sheezel can take care of him there? Frees up LDU, Simpkin and Warlord to hunt clearances.

Wardlaw will hunt the clearance whilst minding him.. you seen how quick he makes up ground in 5 metres? In the middle Daicos doesn’t stand a chance if Wardlaw is on him.

Thats if they play him

I don't see how that works. Wardlaw is the type of player that hunts the ball or the player that gets first hands on the ball at stoppage. Naicos is more of a receiver/ spread type. You can't hunt the guy who get first hands on that ball then hunt the player that receives the ball as well. They are two very different players.

George can.

Ok. Answer me the question I updated in my post. I'm honestly trying to get my head around how this is going to work.
George hunts the hardball. So he’ll stand side by side Nick and then go win the hardball. Its ****ing simple. Then if he doesn’t win the harball
And gets caught outside he’ll attack that soft little campaigner and destroy him

As good as George is, he's not going to win the ball every time. So what happens with Daicos when he doesn't? He will be free to receive the ball in space which is exactly what he wants.

So the competition for those small and medium forward positions:

Ford
Strengths: genuine goal threat and X factor in the 50, can do both half forward link-up play and roving off a contest
Weaknesses: significant lack of defensive instincts, lapses in forward 50 pressure

Taylor
Strengths: can take a nice contested mark occasionally, good shot including from outside 50, defensively more accountable than some of these others, pretty reliable disposal
Weaknesses: low impact on games / goes missing in games, lacks significant goal threat

Stephenson
Strengths: really good at link-up play during those fast breaks, can kick a goal on the run outside 50, has those almost selfish goal instincts that means he takes responsibility of kicking for goal, and pops up at the right time (this is a strength)
Weaknesses: softness at the contest, can go missing in games, pretty shocking lack of hard two-way running, crumbing ability seems to have dropped off.

Duursma
Strengths: big frame and elastic leap so can pluck contested marks, developing goal threat, clean and fast hands
Weaknesses: lack of forward fifty pressure applied, lack of two way running

Curtis
Strengths: ever present goal threat, creates goals out of very little through strength (fend offs, breaking tackles) and skill (evasiveness, creative kicking), can crumb contests, better pressure levels than others
Weaknesses: sometimes goes missing and fails to impact games

Players who may spend significant time in these roles: Simpkin, Sheezel
Other possibilities on the list: Hansen Jr, Harvey

I’m not sure what the pecking order is right now but it’s curious to me that Taylor appears above Ford

At some stage I’d like to see Greenwood and Phillips given the selection leniency and chance to settle into the senior team afforded to other players such as Stephenson. I mean it probably won’t happen, and at the bare minimum I was expecting Clarkson to reward shinboners such as Greenwood for their effort, but that doesn’t seem to happen.

We’ll see, hopefully the side we field against Collingwood is a chance.

All of these proposed match ups for Nick Daicos make me think he's going to have 40 touches and kick 5
Would be like the times we sent random players to tag Ablett Jnr. Ed Lower comes to mind :drunk:

Personally I'd give Bailey Scott a go. He destroyed Hill a couple of seasons back. He's one of our best runners and Scott is just as afraid of the inside stuff as Daicos. It keeps Scott out of our defense. Perfect for Hardeman to slot into.

Wouldn't mind trialing Lazzaro as a tagger in the VFL. Gives me Matt de Boer vibes and he made a good fist of it. Charlie can play inside, outside, is quick, and is pretty much on his last chance.

It would be fairer if he was given the same opportunity - but the role he plays we have inform players for.

To get more opportunities in the seniors he would need to find a second position. Maybe this tagging / defensive role is it?
