Autopsy Round 19, 2023 : Hawks can’t get it done against Tigers

I thought I’d wait until later to calm down a bit to post something a little bit more sane but nup I’m still gutted, frustrated and pi$$ed we let that one slip.

Those red time goals are what cost us in the end and kept us from really putting them away earlier. The late goals always made them feel like they had a chance.

That Moore/Weddle moment. * me.
That was the turning point for me. Brockman hits one up or the other and their momentum slows.

The fact that it's taken me this long to post is an indication that the loss didn't go down well with me.

Wow what a bloody stressful game, and I took my 9yo son too, let out a few choice words I otherwise wouldn't utter within earshot haha.

Gee the Hawks midfield really smashed us for 3 quarters and they were so clean in front of goal. Really deserved the win today.

Sicily pantsed Riewoldt, not for the first time. Yeah a couple of frees maybe not paid against him but he really is the ultimate player in so many ways.. incredible hands, huge boot, strong core, punches so far above his size I reckon he's the best medium defender since Josh Gibson.

And gee Lewis must be one of the draft steals of recent memory. I thought the club took him as a pee take because of his name but he's excellent value.

Hawks on the up, plenty to be excited about.

I agree, the game should've been beyond their grasp. It's a strong lesson about the ends of quarters. If you look at only the final five minutes of each quarter the score is 0.2 to 5.1

But I've managed to cool on the game and look at the positives, which were numerous. Sicily, Day, Worpel, Wingard's first half

I DOUBT WE WILL EVER BE A PREMIERSHIP SIDE WITH THE LIKES OF FROST THERE..... He just does complete clangers, you dont get that from the likes of stewart etc. he should never have been placed at hawthorn, everyone jokes about it, like what will frosty do today but he's a clown, full stop.....hes a laughing stock....

How ?

If we held on and won it does. That ruins mental toughness.

We are stronger because we choke doesnt make sethink

Still out with a few mates who are Tigers fan. Depressing yes, but they took it up to them.

Experience won in the end. Great learning curve for the youngsters. Go the kids. Future is ******* bright!
I really enjoyed 97% of that game. Even most of the last quarter was enjoyable as they held on for a long period, exhausted and under a lot of pressure.

It was fantastic to see a clear - and extremely entertaining - game plan working in practice and players sticking to it. Mitchell is a genius. To have such a young team playing so well and such a defined way is a wonderful effort.

The bare bones of a great side are there, we got over run by a bigger, more experienced and hungrier team but thats ok, results are not the be all this year and that was a massive, massive step forward.

At half time, I found myself thinking that we would be almost certainly climbing a place or two on the ladder but they faded. We are a lock for pick 3 now. Next year these games will become wins but for this year, take the lessons.

Im not having anyone potting Sicily, he was absolutely immense yet again. Their only good period in the first 3.5 quarters was when he was off. The dissent rule is supposed to be dead, we are seeing a dozen players in every game tell the umpire to 'get ****ed'. So to see only Sicily get pinged for dissent was frustrating, but not surprising, he has a target on his back. He plays with passion and would be a lesser player if he didn't.

Lastly, I really enjoyed the commentary. King and Buckley were regularly dissecting and praising the Hawks game plan and it was great to listen to. King can be a bit dramatic but he knows his details and Buckley is the best in the business. Howie was solid too, they worked well together. It really made for great entertainment.

I just wished it had ended 3 minutes earlier.
Losing like that is the worst! Much better to storm home and come up a point short I reckon!

But I think Richmond has no more chance of winning the cup this year than we do and I honestly believe that given a choice between our two lists most people would choose ours over theirs with an eye to 2025 and beyond.

But gee, we really need more talls!

Whatever it was was enough for the umpire to change his mind feom
“Ball in” to “dissent”.
And if you watched closely he had been going at it all day when he wasn’t involved in the play.

Same bloke that was a bit buggered the week after a 3 point last gasp loss to GWS so came off v Adel when leading by under 2 kicks with 3 mins on the clock.

Left Scrim to man Fogarty. Who marks and wins the match.

“where were you in those final moments James….

“I was bit buggered and came off for a rest…. Got stuck”

Do you think Hodge, Crawford, Mitchell, Vanders….when leading a young team that were heartbroken the previous week would just wander off at the 26 min mark of a last qtr as the oppo was coming?

It’s his NON FOOTBALL acts that make me sick to the stomach.
Brave of you to come out and say you have no clue like that.

Didnt see the game . Saw the scores .

Hope everyone has cooled down a little .
Its a learning/development year and sounds like we played really good footy against a side who for years has bullied us around.
Losses like that sting but it goes away and you learn and get better .

That was probably worth 10 games experience to our kids rather then the win last week against poorer opposition.

We will start winning those games and putting more consistent games together but it takes time . Its called playing the long game.
Im really excited about next season adding in some more young guns and the improvement we have shown this season ......remember round 1 and 2 ??

I said in the preview thread that our best was better than theirs but also our worst was worse. That was all on display.

I'd like to think this loss will hurt the players enough to ensure the lessons learned are burned in so there won't be a repeat next time. But then I think I said that about our last close loss.

This is basically the crux of it. We are still learning what our best brand of footy is and it turns out it’s pretty good so far - the gap between our best and worst however is a long way. Kind of like my golf game.

It’s also easy to forget the Tigers are littered with experienced premiership stars. They may well be “past it” now but they’ve been in that pressure caldron 100 times over. These are gold for us as a young side. Don’t forget it only took one of our greatest ever teams about 11 tries to figure out how to beat Geelong in close games too…

Thought Brockman didn't compete hard enough in some aerial contests throughout the game. Had to try half the contest but let the Tigers take a few marks without putting contact on them.

At other times his physical pressure was really good though.

If you want him to go body on body against guys a lot bigger than him in the air, you might be disappointed. His go is to use his athleticism and have a clean jump over them or use his skill to win the ball when it hits the ground.

Not saying he put his body on the line every time, I think maybe one incident in particular he might have done it differently if he had the moment again.

But his strength isn't to go body on body without a run and jump at the contest.

Absolutely heart breaking but we got close to a team that had 14 premiership players. At the end of the day, when the heat turned up in that last quarter, their experience came to the fore.

We made some mistakes in that last quarter that'll burn the players and propel them to win those close ones. With another 20 games under their belts, we'll hit those kicks and take those options needed to hold on in the tight games.

We really need to find the second tall marking option to help Lewis. Sam said at the presser that it was long, deep entries that would make it tricky for the Tigers to rebound - we did it for 3 quarters, but really lacked another option in the last quarter. Interesting to see if Rama comes in straight away post his concussion protocols.

We ran out of legs, but with another pre season under Peter Burge, we'll be better for it and able to run the game out.

The red time goals at the end of each quarter really hurt us. I'm sure that it'll be a focus over the last 6 games.

It sucks we lost, especially knowing we were the better team, but we took it up to a team that's pushing for the top 8 and the future looks incredibly bright.

I feel our coaches went defensive about 8 minutes to early.

It also shows we need another KPF and a Watson type forward.

Then its all about tweaking the list, developing our team and game plan.

2024 will be an exciting year, an that final spot in the 8 should be our goal.

i miss those days of Roughy and Gunston dropping back in the last five minutes of each quarter and constantly take intercepting marks. We don’t have the personal. That’s the role we are searching for, maybe it’s Curtin if we can get him!

They were consistently better in the air than us but we had them covered pretty much every where else

Wingard - great game and good to see him at his best

Edit: my better in the air comment requires one major caveat called James Sicily

That’s a great father son/daughter memory right there. Your nine year old would have loved it. Goddamnit

Geez Reeves is a liability. That’s enough for a while. Give Meek a crack. Watched Reeves closely at game and he’s just a statue,
Unable to give any help once the ball is bounced.
He's a plodder.
Offers a good tap, and that's it.
Tallest bloke in the pack, can't mark it.
Looks unfit around the ground too.
