We are out to get respect, last week was just a warm up against shitmond. Brisbane are rated highly (over rated) and we would gain heeps by beating them in particular up there with no Judd and Fev in their side, them basically at full strength.

My question is who plays on Brennan? Anderson or Bower? I say give Ando a big job and let him show what he can do defencively, much in the same way we gave AJ big jobs last year.

Will Buchanan and Adcock be out?
Buchanan has a broken thumb so likely to miss a few.
Adcock has an ankle injury that saw him going up the race on crutches. They say they are hopeful, but even if he gets up you'd think he won't be moving at 100%.

Can't see Anderson getting up this week.
I'd let Gibbs and Brennan go head to head. Brennan has a blinder, but not sure of his ability to back it up consistently...Gibbsy can do the defensive things well and still find enough of it to be damaging going the other way.

How are they stronger than the last few years we've played them???

Replace Bradshaw with Fev...

and bar the expected improvement of the youngsters which should be offset by the expected improvement in our youngsters how have they suddenly in their eyes improved to such a degree?

I love being the underdogs in this one!

Our rucks will equal or better.

Our mids will equal or better.

Our backline is better with more depth (rotating Russel, Waite, O'hailphin, Scotland, Joseph, Carrazzo at times).

Our forward line is weaker of key forwards compared to them but if Waite is forward he is no slouch and Setanta and Henderson deserve enough respect to take on their opponents 50/50. But our forward line is stronger in the little man crumbing department.

Where Brisbane had an edge over us in the last few years is man vs boys in muscle. Well our boys are now men.... look at the shapes of some of our under 24's in Kreuzer/Gibbs/Murphy/Russell/Eddie/Yarran/Robinson/Joseph/Bower/Jamison/Henderson and these little boys are bulked up men.

Warnock and Simpson are really the only sticks in our side (and even simmo is looking more bulked up than usual), but both able to take a hit.

The 2001-2004 Brisbane initmidation factor no longer is in our minds... our boys firstly want to avenge the final loss and secondly let Fev walk away regretting he ever damaged his career at a team in premiership contention in the next year.

The only reason we lost in the final last year was fittnes. We are a lot fitter now and I think our mid's are equal to if not better than theirs. We need shut down Rich, Power & Black, we do this and we stop 90% of their fwd entrys.

The form Of Carlos, Yaz and EB was great against the Tigers and they will only be better for it. Hendo will want to prove something to his old club if he keeps presenting he will start to become a real focal piont for us. Write him off at your own peril. (yes I've said this before)

Brown always seem to play well against us and our boys down back will be sick of getting stiched up by him. If we can hold Brown to a couple of goals it should be all we need.

Their fwd line has really not improved that much, all they have done is replace one fwd with another and be assured our boys will not let Fev kick many.

It will be a tough game but I think we will have the edge.

Blues by 19.

jj1978, I agree with you for the most part. I think Brisbane are being overrated this preseason. Yeh, they've got Fev, but he's only a "nudge" better than Bradshaw. He doesn't completely change their team, he just makes a dangerous forward line slightly more dangerous.

I said when we screwed the pooch in that elimination final that if we played the same game 12 months later I'd be VERY confident in the Blues winning, because it was really just inexperience and a lack of physical presence that cost us that game. Losing that final was a good learning experience, and I think the team continues to gain more confidence, poise and physicality as we go at the moment.

OK, I think Fev switching from our team to theirs justifies Brisbane's favouritism going into this game... but nothing else has really changed. I don't see why Brisbane are "locks" for everyone's top 8 (many have them at 5th or 6th), whilst we're apparently going to be lucky to finish 9th or 10th. I don't think there's that much between our two sides.

Will be a tough match, but a winnable match. Jamison's fitness is vital, because he's CLEARLY our best matchup for Fev. Thornton will have a go at Brown, and Bower will need to help.

Carrazzo on Black, go head to head with Power and Brennan, sit AJ on Rich, and for the love of god put someone on Sherman, who is the kind of runner who just seems to cut us up. Shake over ice, get the ball deep forward and let Betts and Yarran work their magic.

We play Adelaide in round three, so I was interested to read how the Dockers knocked off the Crows.

Nothing.

How did Fremantle set up?

I only watched the third and final quarters, but they absolutely smashed them out of the middle. Freo's mids were getting first use by Sandilands, and they were actually using it to advantage (for the first time I can remember).

Freo hit them harder as well with tackling and pressure. The Crows just couldnt get thier handball game/ run out of defence working.

Also quick ball movement out of defence (two quick and at times risky short kicks, then one long kick over the zone to a running player) to beat the Adelaide zone and catch them out on the rebound. Kick it fast and take the game on and keep running.

The only time Freo got into trouble was when they got:

a) too handball happy allowing the Adelaide zone to pounce, or
b) chipped it around for too long, either resulting in a turnover or allowing the Crows to flood back.

Pav played up the ground for most of the third and fourth. Hille is looking every bit the player as well.

Silvagni had a good solid game as well FWIW. Not in Freo's best, but did well considering Adelaides forwards are all pretty hard to contain.

For Adelaide the usual suspects did well (McLeod and the older blokes) thier talls were quiet.

Freo actually looked a totally different side from last year. Less turnovers, and far more direct. Looked a lot fitter as well. I wouldnt be getting on them just yet, but if they can back it up against Essendon (Palmer to come back in next week as well) they might be a tough side to play this year.

We play Essendon in Round 3.

We play Adelaide in Round 4.

The one thing that SH**S me about adelaide...

they'll play terribly for a few weeks before we play them... then we think we're in with a chance... but that week Craig changes their whole game plan... they beat us and continue on forward for the rest of the season on the new game plan making finals!

Same with Essendon... they play like dirt for a few weeks before we do.. then they play us and their out of form players all of a sudden find form!!!

The only reason we lost in the final last year was fittnes.
........and a FF that refused to chase his man adding an extra player to the Lions midfield.

So why are the Brisbane Retreads going into this game red-hot favourites?

Retreads Advantages:
- The best 2 KP forwards
- Home ground advantage
- Judd not playing

Blues Advantages:
- Much better midfield
- More leg speed
- Better backline
- Much better rucks.
- Much better small forwards
- Less predictable and more versatile forwardline
- More list talent

Basically, everything depends on Fev and Brown.

:)

Agree greatly with the Crows summation. Last year when we went there and Waite did his knee they had lost 5 of 6 or something and their season was looking bad and they came out and smashed us and continued the good form and figured in the finals.

The Dockers were very good. Looked a different team from... well... history.
Agree - they were fast and aggressive in their intent to tackle and harrass. I don't believe they had any fantastic game plan apart from that - a style we should adopt against all opponents.

Thanks Malifice.
Walker needs to improve
No more than Carrazzo, Waite and Simpson who burn the ball without any negative comments that are just rhetoric.

I guess they weren't top two picks...
Armfield needs to come in for Joey imo.
You don't change a winning team.

Ando made a few errors, but he is still a prospect with some upside.

If you drop Anderson now, he won't develop and learn by running around with some hacks at VFL level. More games and time at the highest level will only see if he is up to it.

Just ask him to drop in front of Brown again.

I'm not so surea bout this game, we have a big chance, Brown is the key, if he;s kept in check we;re half way there I reckon, when he;s up, they seem to lift, also Black is a danger man... these two need to be clamped.

We need to niggle Fev...won;t be hard

We need to niggle Fev...won;t be hard

Yep we need to suck him in and make him do the stupid things he use to do with us so often and get his mind off the game. Then he starts giving away frees and back chatting the umpires.

re: TG, not worried with Tex's disposal, just doesn't make enough of an impression on a game as his training form suggests he should.

and your second point, surely you'd change your team if there is a proven better option who is fit? so the only question i guess is Army's fitness and from bullants reports...he seems fine

I'd be amazed if Adcock played on Thursday night. He could barely put any weight on that ankle, and with a 5 day turnaround, the Brisbane medico's would have to be miracle workers to get him on the ground Thursday night. Not good news for Buchanan who misses, but one less dangerous small forward we have to concern ourselves about.

I truly believe that the very humid conditions that Brisbane played in on Saturday night will impact their ability to run out the second half, particulalry since most sides have trouble getting through games early in the year when they are trying to build match fitness.
