Autopsy Round 5, 2022: St.Kilda v Gold Coast

Sincs seems so hard to match up on. Playing off half back but just running everywhere. Surely teams have tried to tag or match up on him? No one has gone near him this year.
He’s a powerhouse. Moves like peak-Chris Judd. Fast, evasive & powerful. Very rarely see opposition players successfully tackle Sinclair without him getting a disposal away.

I thought this as well so wanted to work it out, and surprisingly the average age doesn't drop as much as expected (didn't calculate the games played because that would be too hard with too many variables)

Currently, we have a combined list age of 1088.3 years old, which when divided across our listed players gives an average age of 24.7 years old.

I would say that from our listed players we lose Ryder, Geary, Hanners, Campbell (all over 30) I think we keep Kent for 1 more year as depth

when taking these players out and then adding in 4x rookies for the draft as well as adding a year onto all our currently listed players gives a total list age of 1070.7 years old which divided equals an average age of 24.3

Effectively, even though we lose our 4 oldest players our average age only drops by 3 months.

From the list that remains, going into 2023, I would say that only 3 players above the average age would not be best 22 when team fully fit (Wood 29.7 next year, Kent 29.3 next year and Lienert 28.8 next year) which means that our best 22 list next year should be in the sweet spot for contention

Interestingly Enough in 2021 we had a total list age of 1102.7 which gave an average age of 25.6 years old, which is where the media got our "old list" narrative from.

so effectively over the course of 2021-2023 we will have taken off an average of 1.4 years off our list which goes to show the turn around that has been done and how our performance has been generated by the younger brigade

and yes, I have too much time on my hands to be going into this much detail

Its just dumb to delist/keep players based on age profile.
Look at ability. Campbell can perform his role, Kent can't. When would you have de-listed Rob Harvey?

I'll have to admit one thing I didn't like about the game was the lack of support offered to hill when he was targeted by the entire back 6 before the ball was bounced.

Yeah, the umpires should have pulled it up though and not needed remonstration.

A lot of our side is in that sweet spot to be honest. We were saying this in 2020 as well and now our core players are 2 years older. Only nas, max, windy, Paton playing who are under 23 I think.

It’s good that we’re not Geelong but we need to keep bringing in gun youngsters - looks like we did alright in the 2021 draft at least. But yeah we’d be hoping to have a crack while Steele Hill Crouch Ross Jones Sinclair Marshall are in their peaks (they’re all 27-29ish I think)

Maybe on tv it wasn’t clear but I thought Dan a butler had his back the whole time. Also did lots of blocks and things off the ball for him too

Sitting down to watch Geel v Haw on Easter Monday and asking why this is a highlighted game. Very likely to be a blowout. Surely the AFL should be more thoughtful about scheduling and dump this outdated 1980s rivalry. Don’t we think a Melb v Geel or us would be a better game. The teams playing well should be rewarded for good form. The Geel vHW rivalry is over.
Went early with the blow out comment. Lol. Lots of others said the same

Most the league would be around 24-25. So when you say ours doesn’t change much, where would we sit “roughly” if we use your above for next years list up against the competition this year?
The following is the listed age of every club in order of youngest to oldest for the 2022 season

Adelaide 23.4
North23.5
Hawks23.8
Gold Coast 23.9
Fremantle24.1
Collingwood24.1
Essendon24.3
Carlton24.3
GWS24.4
Brisbane24.5
Melbourne24.5
Sydney24.7
St Kilda 24.7
Port24.8
Bulldogs25
Richmond25.1
West Coast25.3
Geelong25.7

If we use our estimated age of 24.3 it would put us as roughly the 7th youngest club by age.

Some interesting notes in that Richmond, West Coast and Port, all of which are struggling this year, could look set to fall off a cliff

Looks by the current form and age demographic that it will be between us, Fremantle and Carlton as the next team to come from lower of the ladder up into the 8 and then push deep into the finals

Surely if one player is blatantly targeted by 6, well away from the ball, that is suggestive of an actionable intent on behalf of those 6.

Gotta be as bad as a 666 violation … but probably good that Hill didn’t wave his arms around while being mugged. We couldn’t afford to give away a 50 on top of the first two goals 🤣

That aged well.

Jack Hayes set shot routine and kicking action looks very tidy. I was interested to see that CD have him rated as the second best key forward after Joe Daniher.

CD also have listed Ben Long in career best form.

Probably three guys missing who we've rated on here but who haven't troubled the scorers in the coaches award yet - D-Mac, Seb, Wilks.

Crouch and Sinclair moving up in quality gives us 3 top 25 players in AF scores equal to the Dees. If we get Amon we get another.

I’ve watched the replay and only have two observations.
1. Windhager was manning Miller for a lot of the game. I really like that in terms of giving him a role, exposing him to a top line player, and educating him. Did he have a similarly defined role last week? I seem to think he did but can’t recall his opponent. Mitchell maybe?
2. As old friend CursingFijian posted above about Jack Hayes; I have a sneaking suspicion that as this year wears on he will become an increasingly important part of the team. He has a mature body, is being asked to tackle important roles, is doing that successfully, and growing in confidence in each game. What happens when the Magarey Medalist realises that not only can he perform at this level but belongs here too? The jolt to his self belief would be huge.

That's when he'll probably get offers and leave :p

On On the Couch tonight they mentioned that we had 8 of the top 50 post clearance contested possession players. The next best team was Melbourne with 5. Just goes to show our hunger to win the footy once it leaves the stoppage.

Looks like we've taken some learnings and made some improvements since the Pies game and even the praccies. Our clearances, pressure on clearances and outside run were way off early days - Pies were able to walk it out with ease.

Now we're doing well in clearances, it's getting harder for teams to walk it out and we have an good outside running game. Think we are 4th for bounces as well.

Hope we can keep this up and keep building

Seems like he may be the type that gets up for the big games and big moments!
