Preview Round 6 - Carlton vs Sydney Friday Night 29/4/2011 - SCG

After watching the Bullants yesterday the only 2 who deserve a game are Lucas and Armfield. Hendo looks seriously underdone and maybe 6-8 games away unfortunately, Setanta can't cut the mustard and Brock McLean is the biggest mistake Carlton have made in the last 5 years. He kicked 3 goals but in reality was terrible and almost unsighted in first half.

For me the only 2 changes Carlton should be considering are the exclusions of White and Hampson although who would provide the secondary ruck cover. If Hammer retains his place I would like to see him spend more time rucking rather than as a full forward.

Hopefully Yarran is OK to play otherwise Gibbs back to HBF.
White? Our undersized backline to become smaller

Reading on the Sydney board that there is rain forecast for everyday leading up to Friday and possibly Friday itself.

Surely McLean will revel in the wet conditions and getting in and under. Chuck him in for Joseph and make Robinson the sub.

White for Bower based on availability.

I don't see why White and Hampson should be dropped when they are obviously in better match fitness than Bower and O'Hailpin. Obviously, White and Hampson aren't first choices but they will do a better job than bringing in players who are underdone and are still getting over surgery/injury. Hampson needs a lot of work but what else can we do...? Look at the stats - Adelaide had 7 players who took a punch at a ruck contest at a stoppage and we had 3. You take out Hampson and leave Warnock as our sole ruckmen, he realistically has to play the whole game and has to get to nearly every ruck contest. Why would we put him under that stress when Hampson can help...?

It showed with Henderson against the Bombers - the MC brought him in when he was underdone and dropped Thornton which I think we can agree was a mistake. Thornton isn't a first choice in the forward line but was kicking goals - why did we drop him...? I understand that players in the 2's need to get game time in the seniors but we shouldn't put them in just because they are first choice in their position when someone else who is doing an ok job, should be dropped.

With the game being at the SCG we don't need to go tall IMO.

The Swans in the past have just played lock down footy against us at the SCG, so we need to be quick (1st quarter against Crows like). Get it into Waite & Walker both out of the square, all others play high at CHF and run towards goal.

Kennedy and Jack have been good for them, and Bolton always finds a way to get us, so players Carrots, Robbo playing tag with them.

Gibbs will go to Goodes, normally does well there.

One thing that will work our way is that Sydney don't havea strong forward line so far this year.

Only change for this week will be Yaz out (rested due to 6 day break and need his thigh ready for the Saints, that way he'll have 16 day break for a strain when normall for a tear its a 21 day injury), Replaced by either Lucas or Armfield (my choice, Armfield)

For those calling for Bower, he was injured in the Ants and possibly reported. Thorton may also be reported, and Setanta wasn't great IMO and stills needs to get some match fitness in the Ants, as does Hendo.

Sydney coming off the bye, well rested. At the SCG....Going to be hard, will be a good challenge!

So far the only team to win off the bye is StKilda on Friday nigth against Brisbane (both had the bye last week) and neither look overly strong after the week off. Not sure they bye is helping anybody just yet....lets hope!!

touche :)

Assuming it is wet i expect Carlton will get a advantage as despite what the media seem to believe the Swans are actually a terrible wet weather football team.

We haven't really had a lot of wet weather footy that I can remember, the main one that sticks out is against Port a few years back we went ok.

The Swans were good against Essendon in the wet a few weeks ago. Bolton loves it!

Zee, do you record the whole game? Apparently my sister (who I was sitting next to) was in the Carlton Draught "slow motion" shots of the crowd at the end of the match. .. Would love a copy. ..

Has done an excellent job once at Etihad (might have gone to him again afterwards) but I'm pretty sure since that game Goodes has been far too good and is in brilliant form at the moment.

That is normally when Goodes pushes forward, Goodes just becomes too tall for him in the air, which is where he beats him, onball Gibbs is too clean and gets more space IMO

From the final compared to the game on Saturday we have 6 players different in the selected sides

The final: Hadley, Jacobs, Armfield, Davies, Bower, Henderson,

Saturday (v Crows): White, Curnow, Laidler, Duigan, Yarran, Hampson

Out of curiosity, what is Carlton like in wet conditions?
Let's have a looksy.

The last time it rained during a Carlton game was against Richmond in Round 1. When it did, we lost the lead and had to come from behind in the fourth quarter.

The time before that was against Melbourne where we nearly blew a 40 point lead when the rain come down heavily.

We're terrible in the wet.

withall the congestion I thought Robbo would explode and put his body in harms way. Seemed to be another really flat and reactive.

Wasn't through lack of effort. .. Watching it live, Robbo made ground time and again with absolute gut running. .. two times stuck in my mind. .. Once late in the third a long bomb to Tippet/Walker on Jammo/Laidler and Robbo just gut run to make the contest a 3 on 2 and crashed the pack. .. We won the ball eventually. .. Another was a run from the centre square to the wing to present an option for a kick out of defence, the kick wasn't the best though and sat him under the ball with Taylor Walker bering down on him, ended in a boundary throw in. .. Was plenty of other incidence as well. .. Robbo is really starting to shine for mine, even when he doesn't get the ball. ..

Sorry mate, I get the links off the bigpond site for those who have trouble with their site/can't be bothered watching it there :thumbsu: Maybe auslinux on youtube could help you ;)

For me, I think we need to go taller against Sydney.
IN:Thornton
OUT: Joseph

I am not the biggest fan of Thronton, but he has shown versatility in either defence or as a forward. This could come in handy depending on how the match eventuates. I particularly think he mixes things up in the forward line and can keep the Swans guessing.

Nothing against Joseph, just think we need some taller players....

*That being said, I'd be happy to give O'Alphin a run if he is match fit. At least his height might worry the Swan's defence.

Hampson to take on more of the ruck responsibilities and Warnock to spend more time in FF.

Well Hampson is a woeful player is one reason

From memory of last years EF, Sydney really struggled with our height advantage. Warnock/Jacobs had a field day, Waite and Walker were playing great up forward. Sydney will try to squeeze us at the SCG and turn it into a stop start contested match..(which doesn't suit us)

In: McLean Thornton
Out: Joseph Hampson

Hampson isn't a woeful player.

He's a number one ruckman who has been asked to play forward with Henderson and Kreuzer out.

I wonder how many people noticed the strapping on his right knee.

Isn't moving freely for someone so quick.

Dropping Hampson would be as dumb as dropping Gibbs.

Warnock can't ruck for the whole game.
