My son got tagging roles and after a while you start to play like that's your brand, you're praised for your effort at stopping a gun. He stopped going for his own ball and waited to get lead everywhere. Eventually he fell out of love with footy. It's usually because you are fit and disciplined but it also kind of says you aren't good enough in your own right. He was a pretty promising player but he got the joy coached out of him. I think that's what was happening to Steele. You sometimes need to just go, play your game and let them chase you, we trust you.

Richo just wanted him to blanket everyone but didn't seem to have much faith in his game. The best taggers in the AFL are usually hard edged journey men that didn't make it on merit and are so desperate for a career that they can handle doing anything for the chance.
Got to be honest and say what happened to your son isn’t really relevant to Steele or more especially trying to win a game by stopping Cunnington. No idea why you would say Steele was falling out of love of the game as he had a good year last year. And richo used one tagger. He let Ross run free and that meant he got more of the ball. Richo had faults but blanketed everyone wasn’t one of them.

anyway my point still stands. A win is more important than Steele having a half of footy playing on his own. I thought you said something today about winning is more important than playing certain players to give experience. Maybe it wasn’t you but to me that is vital. We need a very good year. This virus could still be around next year so we need as many members as we can. This year is all about winning as much as we can. Development can get stuffed this year.

I think it does, tagging is actually boring. I think Ratts has made him look invigorated without losing the good bits of his defensive game. You are a very black and white person aren't you Plugs.

Pretty good fixture for the next 4. All in queensland Sydney Gold Coast Essendon and Geelong. As good as could expect.

Sydney looks like the only easyish game but at least it's neutral territory.

No I’m a common sense person. I don’t look for things because your son got bored with tagging. And you do have a habit of going off on a tangent that has nothing to do with what I said initially. Winning is more important than Steele having half a game not tagging.

I don't disagree on the impact it can have, but I don't know if there's much evidence that this was the case with Steele pre Ratts. He did come 3rd in the b&f in 2018 and 2019. He was pretty consistent for the whole year last year.

He's become a player who attacks rather than defends first IMO. He looks like he plays with enjoyment but what do I know. Hopefully he keeps it up even if nothing has changed. He seems to be getting the same stats as last year in a lot shorter game. Improved contested possession, score involvements and scoring though.

No doubt he is playing better. Impossible to argue otherwise.

Seems pretty bloody good to me.

Essendon are playing well, Geelong are always a test for us, Gold Coast nearly got us twice last year with much worse sides. Even Sydney seem to smash us every year. It's good that the games aren't at their home grounds (except GC).

Yeah I certainly agree that he's playing better and has a more offensive role. He’s AA for mine at this stage.

But who would be better. We have the worst side we are yet to play and middle of the table sides. The only one better would be hawthorn. Everyone else is going to be as hard if not harder to play.

Got to say it's the happiest I've been with our backline for a long time. I just hope it can stay together for most or all of the season. Over many years of watching the Saints we've never had any trouble getting star forwards and on ballers (okay we may be one or two down there just at the moment). But we've regularly struggled to have high quality personnel down back. Spud and Maxy being the obvious exceptions. Even under Lyon when we set an AFL record for the least points conceded, it came on the back of a well drilled team defence not a collection of stars.

But right now I like the look of it. Howard and Carlisle are great twin towers who are interchangeable in position. There's no big fear at the moment of a monster forward tearing us apart as has happened so much in the past. Wilkie is as reliable as they come, very versatile and a great kick.

The development of Clarke, Coffield, Long and Paton has been impressive and resulted in the likes of previous locks such as Robbo, Savage and Webster having to look on. And of course there's old man Gears whose still up for the lock down role.

I just hope we can hold the group together. it will go a long way to shape our season.

Carlisle has been underrated this year. Another good game last night.

Two things you can bank on each year. We won't play Port Adelaide in Melbourne and when we play Sydney you can bet that Buddy will be back and firing. He's missed heaps of footy in the last 3 years but he always manages to tear us another one.

Guess he's just sitting back waiting for the Saints again. If he does it will be a good test for our improved defense.

I thought Ryder was better than just wearing down ROB. He did it to us in their come from behind win a few years back. He lists when the side needs some ruck domination. I thought he was huge last night and I have been totally against playing 2 rucks. It almost looks like you need to rest one of them though at the moment. Perhaps Marshall will get a bit more forward craft with time so make it work better.
Ryder got 4 coaches votes so clearly he did a hell of a lot more than wear down his opponent

Polled coaches votes in 6/7 games so far this year - most of any player in the comp.
He'd be winning right now with Butler probably in 2nd.

Quite an extraordinary game by Steele, and a great season so far. People forget he was a highish draft pick and we got him for a chiko roll and a packet of fries. Amazing what happens when you have a coach who believes in you and I am guessing his mental preparation is Lenny or Roo like. In a team where some good players have stagnated he is a standout.

I also though need to apologise. I was deeply convinced the loss to Fremantle would decimate the group and predicted last week that we would capitulate under the home ground advantage, the Crows need to win a game—i did not count on the umpiring—and our ten season long inability to cope with travel. I am of course happy to be wrong. I am finding it hard to judge this game as the umpiring is simply confused, not biased, confused, and naturally favours the home team.

I am still seeing holes in the midfield but that is no new info to anyone. The defence has been good, Max King does some things that amaze me for a first year player — the hands in traffic for a tall...

Coff :) Paton :)

I have been critical of Gresh but I was surprised, astounded and then proud of his contest work. Kicking at goal less so...

What is the story with Tex? Seriously, he duds out game after game but against us, wtf?

Still to be convinced but happy with the response when the crows got a run on. And will reiterate that I was wrong about the result.
