Under Richo he could never find the ball with out a role on someone who lead him to it. Last night I noticed him going for the ball with Crouch coming at him. What ever Ratts did to reprogram him is outstanding. It might just be that all the strong at the contest and pleasing effort just meshed with Ratts go out and enjoy your footy...and we have invented the perfect modern mid. Tall, strong, tough, disciplined, demanding of accounting for, clean disposal, good vision. There seriously aren't many flaws to him this year. He's worth about 70 Crouch disposals with his ball use.

I thought he'd hit his level as a sometimes great mostly good tagger. He's really clicked into gear. It also helps having dangerous mids along side him I guess, with Jones bursting away like an electric hammer, he gets the attention of the opposition mids. Guys like Steele and Gresh can get free. Same with Hill, he takes the best match up and leave Billings to get some freedom. That's the bonus of quality coming in.
At the risk of sounding boring, l suspect it's just Jack's natural talent and determination at work, and the difference is Ratts took the shackles off and held his nerve like in the North game.

That's called backing your players.

How is losing a game a good result? No idea if we would have won but you could guess we may have.

I've so far been a staunch 'naysayer' on playing both Ruckman this year mainly due to Ryder's deficiencies and Marshall's potential loss of development. I'm now of the tentative view that Ryder's centre bounce tap work (sealed the game in the last 1/4) is absolutely worth having in the side. Marshall will get his chance as the main man next year and beyond and on reflection would be better off if he can nail down the forward position (playing 50%) as we suffered a bit when Marshall was in the ruck. No idea if Ryder can be effective enough against the premium ruckman to come (Grundy, Gawn & Natanui) to justify his spot.

My son got tagging roles and after a while you start to play like that's your brand, you're praised for your effort at stopping a gun. He stopped going for his own ball and waited to get lead everywhere. Eventually he fell out of love with footy. It's usually because you are fit and disciplined but it also kind of says you aren't good enough in your own right. He was a pretty promising player but he got the joy coached out of him. I think that's what was happening to Steele. You sometimes need to just go, play your game and let them chase you, we trust you.

Richo just wanted him to blanket everyone but didn't seem to have much faith in his game. The best taggers in the AFL are usually hard edged journey men that didn't make it on merit and are so desperate for a career that they can handle doing anything for the chance.

After the Carlton win and job on Cripps Steele was interviewed and said sometimes it’s the best thing for him to tag because he gets lead to the ball that way and can get a bit lost sometimes without it. At least at stoppages he said it’s the plan to match him up with a top player because it gets him in best positions. Some people need it and thrive on it, nothing wrong with it . He’s played his best games when he’s been matched up.

The worst umpiring performance I have ever seen. The umps folded like deck chairs after Clarko sooked about the HTB rule. Amateur hour stuff, the fact that they even listened to a current coach. Clearly compromised.

I thought in the third quarter the game was as hot as any match this year. Both teams were running at over 200 pressure points. Adelaide played their best game all year. We did well to hold up with one man down.

Thought Steele & Coffield were our best. Take Doedee out of the Crows team & we win by 10 goals.

The best thing to come out of that game was seeing dougs demand better from his team mates it didn't matter who it was the two I Seen cop a serve was wilky and Jones but I bet there were plenty more. Haven't had that since saint nick. I hope the king can start following along these lines as well.

One thing with Byrnes, there were 2 occasions I remember he worked really hard to present an option and Billings and Clark both fluffed the kick which f’ed him over. If they hit he gets a few more touches and some more confidence
Yeah and I think Lonie out wide near the boundary fluffed the kick as well. He also was on the pine a lot. We needed the win, gave the kid a taste. Think Sinclair will be back in the side this week with Battle’s concussion and Hannebery for Byrnes.

Last night highlighted how incredibly important it is to find a gun inside mid.
We lose all momentum when teams clamp down on our forward run and our runners get drawn into the contest. Someone to support Steele feeding it out will do wonders.

Howard... great game. Love him getting angry. Sometimes people need to be held accountable by their peers.

Lonie beyond frustrating. Too much greed. Yet when he did the team stuff we scored and he even got one himself.

Byrnes not ready. Had a taste and back he goes. Good learning experience for him.

A lot of debate around Marshall and Ryder. So I’ll say this.... IN MY OPINION Marshall was the biggest culprit in our loss last week. Got smashed. Didn’t give enough of a contest. Until he learns how to have an impact on his bad days, then I am more then happy to keep using the two rucks. I want people to earn the right to earn there debut or be the man up forward or to be our sole ruck. His good is excellent. His poor really hurts us. Just like it did last week. Next week Port will rotate 2/3 ruckmen, not the time to drop Ryder.
Steele is really stepping it up, consistently our best player imo

The good: We won

The bad: We only won becouse the Crows kicked poorly when they were on top

The ugly: The umps

I read an article on fox footy maybe that suggested the same thing. 29 free kicks against with 6 of their 8 goals coming directly from free kicks. So in saying that how on earth does one come to the conclusion we were lucky to win? Put in three decent umpires and i say we win by 10 goals.

Lonie's tap behind for Butler's goal, Lonie gets charged through his back right in front of the ump, no free. It would've been advantage anyway but that's not the point. How can the umps invent free kicks, which they obviously haven't seen because it didn't happen, and miss blatant free kicks 5 metres in front of their eyes? We've been asking that question for over 100 years. And again, Lonie tackles Laird who fended off, prior opportunity, no free kick to Lonie.

Anyway watching the replay Lonie does so many things to create goals, he had a hand in three or four this match. Really throws his body around for the team. Yeah, he did two silly things, I was pissed at the time. It can be seen as selfish, but I think he was just in the zone of wanting to do it all. He'll learn from it and do the better percentage option next time. Lonie, Kent and Butler are performing so well together and creating such an efficient forward line. Kent's lightning hands off to Butler was sweet as. And Butler is just the sweetest reader of the play, A+ crumb positioning.

Gresh is starting to hit some form, he'd be getting some votes if he nails the set shots going forward. We all know he runs out wide, that's for more power as he's not a hard kicker. It works for him usually and I don't have a problem with it, but at the moment that voice in the head has him not timing those kicks. He should probably straighten up a little until he's timing them again. Also when his shots are shorter you don't kick the cover of the ball, so that screws with his timing too.

It's great how important King is to our structure now. What if he misses a few games? Marshall permanent forward? We don't have many natural tall forwards after that. Jack Bell?

Bell would be very raw, and super skinny at present.

Options:
  • Battle
  • Marshall
  • Brown to to FB, Howard forward
  • Brown to FF
  • Marsh
  • Austin
  • Abott
  • Joyce - has play forward a but with Sandi
  • Play one less tall and bring back say Parker or even Robbo

As you say - plenty of options to rejig forward line to give players a break. I think they are very happy with the 3 tall, three small setup so the most obvious to allow for King to have a break would be to either swing Battle forward or bring Brown in and move Dougal forward.

Bigger problem is the midfield rotations. With Dunstans injury, we desperately need Hanners to be fit and Ross to find some form. Part of the reason why Byrnes should get another run - he's going to be needed at some point so give him another chance to get a feel for it.

Is Dunstan injured? I thought we dropped him.

IMO Kane Cornes was one of the best taggers in the competition because he could nullify opponents and still get a heap of the ball.
I had reason to check out Steele's stats in another thread and Jack Steele currently averages more clearances, double the amount of tackles, and 42% more contested possession than Kane Cornes. Kane averaged more disposals than Jack (+2.65) but Jack is building in that area. I think if he can maintain his consistency, we have the makings of a pretty special player on our hands.
