That would not work at all - because all it would spark from the media is the narrative of "why haven't Port extended Ken yet?"
Yes that's true the club is dumb enough to let it drag.
which is why the sooner they come out and say something the better. I don't buy this there is no succession plan stuff. There are people at Richmond who believe that carr pulled out of the tigers proces cause he was promised the port job. Mind you if ken would come out as soon as his future is questioned by the media by saying he is not entertaining any talks on his future until seasons end that would help ease any talk but it's probably too much to ask of king ken

Would be so on brand for this regime to do nothing though going into round 1, get blasted by Collingwood with Houston BOG and then face a barrage of questioning from the media about last year's trade period along with Ken's contract and the uncertainty it provides even though it is only round 1.
Port getting turned over to the tune of 8-10 goals against Collingwood at the G is safer than BHP shares I reckon.

There’ll be a big build-up and focus given the Houston angle and usual Collingwood-Port angst, plus you’d expect 60-70k there, all in all a recipe for our blokes to shit the bed.

All it would take the next week against Richmond is a slow start and it wouldn’t take long for the angst to come out among the Supporters

Any succession plan is only to the extent of telling Josh there is one to keep him around, and having it as Plan B, if the season turns to shit. They are all too in on Ken (whether they truly believe or just because they can't admit they were wrong about him) to put anything out publicly. Announce one and it immediately starts the questions of 'If Ken is going, why not leave now and let Josh put his stamp on the side as soon as possible?' We all know how those at the club hate being questioned on their 'wisdom'.

There's no succession plan

Carr telling Richmond he wasn’t applying because his personal circumstances demand he stay in Adelaide regardless, was so hilariously circumstantially ‘us’.

Hinkley need not worry about a knife in his back, and the club knows Josh isn’t going anywhere regardless of how things pan out.

Contrast the Cahill/Williams situation where Brisbane and Collingwood were actively sniffing around, and Essendon were definitely calling the instant Sheedy’s flirtation with returning to Punt Rd as saviour came to fruition — and Choco made it clear he was champing at the bit for a big chair.

We are gonna end up with a guy who has no fire in the belly and is just comfortable. I guess exactly like it is now.

At least a handful of our most exciting players are on the cusp of completing their degrees.

More to life than footy, moite.

From what I hear they actually know full well that it's beyond time to move the heck on from this guy but they're all just so comfortable in their little good but not great kingdom that they aren't immediately motivated to actually do anything and just keep pushing it back as a matter to deal with another day. It's a club paralysed by a lack of true ambition.

I'm really not sure how a club in our position has any right to selling succession plans and such it's bordering on ludicrous, you investigate why things don't go the distance on the regular & get fresh eyes on all areas in a review not pipe "Winning percentage" "We played THREE FINALS" "Don't let anyone tell you we didn't have a good year" & then appoint from within when it fails again.

I'm just hoping Josh in his own vision is a bit stronger and he ends up being their lucky reach moment against all the flow of the clown car race.

It's funny really how every year I enter the season thinking, it defies all logic, there's just no way this isn't his last year bar making a GF, there's so much smoke, fans are fed up, it's just an impossibility he's here next year.....

And then slowly coming to the realisation as the months drag on that the powers that be will re sign him virtually regardless of results.

Depressing is an understatement

I believe Josh applied then withdrew later. Can someone confirm?

Yep, and they knew in 2023 when they extended him as well. The 2021 prelim and the aftermath made it abundantly clear.

They'd step over their own grandmothers to just stroll through every season as comfortably as possible with their mates at the club.
