I just can't get over the smug

"How did we do? How did we do in 2023?"

We lost a ******* home final (again) against a side that we beat by 50 points in home and away because we got totally outcoached by a coach that we could easily have gotten to Port last year if we'd had the balls to make a play for him.

That's how we ******* did

Proving the likes of David King, David Penberthy and Mark Maclure wrong by making the eight against expectations might be something you privately enjoy, but to gloat about it at a Best & Fairest dinner in the aftermath of a straight sets exit?

He’s literally shouting ‘I don’t know what I’m doing!’ out loud.

I dunno about all this old school expectation rubbish, it's about progression & not flogging a dead horse for over a decade.

Anyhoo they never listen they just tell us what we supposedly think. Ridiculous.

The false dichotomy that they paint to quell the expectations is sickening.

Port: [fail in another finals series, this time in straight sets, both games not even looking like we were a chance]
Fans: "Maybe we could look at a new coach? 11 years is a long time."
Port: "IT'S NOT THE SANFL ANYMORE!!"

Maybe there's something in between, where the club is actively pursuing a premiership and refreshing the team involved in doing so, from the players to the coaches to the football dept.

As a supporter, that's what keeps me interested.
Stagnation, even in the upper middle ground, is death.

Funny how he was praising how good Motley was and then saying all that.
Maybe just maybe it illustrates why Bucks never saw ultimate success in the AFL, certainly McRae didn't approach chasing a flag as an almost unattainable mission.

We know it's hard, but that's a terrible mindset you are on the back foot subconsciously from the get-go.

There might be something to that, but Bucky Cunningham was wheeled out to say pretty much exactly the same thing in the aftermath of the straight sets exit.

I’m certain Koch and co think we’re a bunch of pliable morons who can be convinced of anything, lest we all jump ship and the club floats down the Derwent.

So in 2019 they deployed Whateley/Rucci/Kornes/Dwayne to trumpet the identical message that Hinkley was still the man to coach Port and as a supporter base we unrealistically expect Magpies-era domination, etc.

And in 2023 they’ve wheeled out some even bigger guns — Bucky, Buckley and Dom [sic] — to convince us that premierships are hard to win and ‘look what happened in 2002/3/4!’

It’s nuts.

Jesus Christ he's a ******* meme.
They are working hard you satchel of units. They're professional footballers, it's pretty rare they don't work hard, all teams do. Manic workrate is not how you win flags, you need a system.

I hate him
They're working incredibly hard - for every single score. That comes down to the game plan implemented by the senior coach. When/if Ken is finally replaced, I have no doubt that every Port player will reap the benefits of playing under a coach who actually knows what he's doing.

‘It’s been almost five years since you said this, how about we move you on?’

starts blubbering

Who the hell thought it was a good idea to have such blatantly scripted questions fed to Hinkley prior to his pathetic speech.

Absolutely cringeworthy and topped off another failed season.
Ken's insistence. No doubt in the world.

Yeah I have a really simplified version of this...

Every year you have to sell a fanbase on one of three things:

Success - You're competing for the flag. Brisbane. Collingwood. Melbourne. GWS.
Hope - You're on a recognisable path and there's a clear end goal. Carlton. St Kilda. Sydney. Adelaide. Hawthorn. Fremantle (who are starting to get antsy 4 years in).
Change - You're making gutsy decisions to get on a path. Essendon (players and captain change). Norf. Gold Coast. Richmond.

So you take those clubs away and who are you left with:
Geelong, Western Bulldogs, West Coast & Port Adelaide.

What do those four clubs have in common?

They've all won flags in the last 7 years (except Port). They all have current coaches that have a proven record of success that has taken them to multiple grand finals (except Port). Their coaches are under a lot of pressure and might lose their jobs at the end of next year (except Port, and maybe Geelong but even then I think Chris Scott would have the integrity to walk if he didn't see himself as being the guy any more).

The longest path without success any non-Port club is on is 4 years (Adelaide with Nicks and Fremantle with Longmuir).

Port is up to 11 years.

They're asking us to accept something that no fanbase in the history of the AFL has ever accepted or even been asked to accept. Not even close.

I don't see any issues with Port tbh.

Hinkley will leave the club an absolute mess when he eventually goes. Almost like he will deliberately do this. Will take years and years for us to recover.

And the smouldering ruins that he has created - the football media will be like ‘and they didn’t want Hinkley for this?’

In other words - Ken will destroy the place for his own vanity.

The culture is already shot. The players don’t care about winning, they have disdain for the fans and they don’t care about the club. All of these things can be directly attributed to Hinkley

You are absolutely on the money re the shot culture and Hinkley, but I would add Kok to the `directly attributed to' bit.
The near enough is good enough, Southern Power tealsters here we come Bull Sh*t is definitely on him!
