I don't overly rate Petch but next in line small forward. His season overall wasn't terrible but his hammies started blowing out every time he started showing promise. The thing about SPS and any young mid for us is that they'll be stuck at HFF and as a midfielder he just seems to small to make an impact inside and doesn't have the tank to any use on the outside.

Half forward, with runs thur the midfield is his best position. Play him half forward and you won’t regret it.

SPS for Petrocelli is a clear loss for Carlton both on output and potential, however most Carlton fans appreciate we are going to get unders for Samo and most of that is our own doing.. and a straight swap might just make the most sense for both clubs. WCE cap is allegedly tight so replacing1 similar salary with another might be good business. Personally I would rather something like this over any likely picks we would get in return but its not often a straight swap for players happens.

If we don't get anything for Samo it won't be unders. He would struggle next year at the Blues, I can't see him making the 22 at any point especially if Cerra and Hewitt come on board. There are better players to come in as well such as Brodie Kemp, Fogharty and Marchbank. I just can't see where he fits in next year. Depth player maybe if we get hammered by injuries? Petrocelli has a bit more heart. I'd say that's a win for the Blues.
Love Samo, just not quite there.

Don’t think Samo is soft, but think there’s a few ahead of him for a midfield spot that push themselves harder and play with more intensity. Apart from the current midfield there’s also Kemp, Cerra who you’ve mentioned, but I’d also add hewett and Carroll. Carroll is first year, saw him play some reserves and he looks really good.

Freo weren’t keen, so see how Samo goes at WC. Would love to see him make it, but think he needs to work harder. He’s still only 23 or so, so see what happens.

Wouldnt surprise me if he stays, not sure he is more likely to get a game at the Eagles than Blues anyway.. Eagles midfield is stacked and then they have Liam Ryan and potentially Willy Rioli playing the small half forward role.. Actually makes little sense him going there if its about opportunity.

Problem is we've got Ryan, Rioli, Cripps, Jones, Petrecelli in the small forward stakes.
And then you've got Waterman and also Sheed, Shuey, Yeo, Kelly who can all kick a goal floating forward (and all from 50!!).
We dont need SPS for HFF.

We desperately NEED inside mids or even outside mids who chase and tackle.
The ability to score a goal isn't anywhere close to being an issue - the midfield battle is what we need to address, and if we address it well we're probably right back in contention.

Our midfield is really old though. Could be a lot less stacked in a year or 2.

At times in 2019 we played Ryan, Rioli, Cripps and Cameron/Petrucelle in the same team

Last year it was Ryan, Cripps and 2 of Jones/Petrucelle/Langdon

There is a spot there for SPS if he applies himself as he's got more natural talent that some of the latter choices.

Ideally Gaff and Sheed are on the wings. Our midfield then drops off dramatically after Yeo, Shuey, Redden, Kelly.
We missed a combined 34 games from the players above this year. This is why we could use SPS, he would've been a regular for us this year

And not even a C grader coming through

Holy hell, we are in trouble for the next decade or 2

The issue is SPS isn’t a small forward and he isn’t a midfielder and he doesn’t have the full skill set or athletic traits to play either. Doesn’t kick many goals.

He can hit some nice passes inside 50, but unless he’s locking down in defence (which he’s actually surprisingly good at) there’s just not much to his game.

Brander/SPS swap seems perfect for both clubs. Think Carlton come out slightly behind, but there’s not much to haggle over. SPS is now at an awkward age, going into his sixth year next year, and Brander is a KPP who can still be sold on potential and factoring in the usual develop curve of key position players.

We are desperate for backup key defenders (I know Brander isn’t that, yet). Think this trade gets done pretty easily.
