Ophidian Old Boys 15.12 (102) defeat Gumbies FFC 15.5 (95)
The last two premiers faced off in a rare Thursday fixture with the winner to sit on top of the ladder (for a few days at least). It was the Old Boys who controlled most of the match and led for all but 42 seconds. myblueroan (26 disposals, 5 tackles), thewizardmelon (23 disposals, 7 tackles), Harvey Manfrenjensenden (4 goals) and 200-gamer Tigerturbulance (19 disposals, 14 hit outs and 5 tackles) led the stats for the triumphant. Meanwhile, the double blues were led by Mop (26 disposals, 101 DT), ossie_21 (18 disposals, 7 tackles) and cats_09 (18 disposals, 13 hit outs and 2 goals).

Season 37 Round 16
West Coast Wonders v Mount Buller Demons at The Colosseum
Much had been said about the 7-6 Wonders in recent weeks, after a scintillating start to S37 had since dropped off. A return to the top 4 was a minimum for this list full of high achievers and awaiting them was another foundation team in the 7-6 Demons. Win this and finals are almost assured, lose and you’ve got a tough final month. The Demons, despite being the away team, played with calm collected confidence in the first, with a 20pt lead to boot. However, an 8 goal second quarter had the Wonders back in control of the game. A further back and forth shootout affair continued as the Wonders ended up having the legs towards the end, running out 22pt winners. moginie (99DT) and cats2rise (89DT) performed well for the Demons and ClarkeM (104DT), dogs105 (91DT) and Grand Uncle Horace (78DT) were best afield for the Wonders.
Fighting Furies v Ophidian Old Boys at rfctigerarmy's hippodrome
With the Old Boys on top and finals locked in, there was some but not all to play for, and what better reason than knocking the Furies out of the finals? But much work was to be done before this occurred. In what was supposed to be a cracking day for footy, few took advantage of it and those who pounced first, often won the contest. The OOB worked hard to stay in the contest and make the Furies work for their points, but ultimately a 7 goal to 3 goal term in the final quarter saw the Furies finally run over the top of the Ophidians. Their finals ambitions remained intact, for now. Harvey Manfrenjensenden (4 goals, 104DT) and Robertio (98DT) were the two sole shining lights for the OOB on gameday. The Furies had game winners all over the park, including Frothies Mcveigh (126DT), NaturalDisaster (101DT) and an unstoppable ShaunDuggan (8 goals, 80DT).
Round 16 | Furies v Old Boys | 3 | Harvey Manfrenjensenden (OOB) | 2 | ShaunDuggan (FUR) | 1 | NaturalDisaster (FUR) |
Las Vegas Bears v Dragons FFC at The Stadium in the Sky
During the pointy end of the season, winning is all that matters, no matter how you get it done, find that W however you can. Both these teams are a chance at the 8 and so fight they must. In consistent S37 Bears style, they kicked 3 goals in the first quarter, then 10 the next. After shaving the deficit to be 21pts up at half time, a combined 17 goals were kicked in the second half, totalling a whopping 39 for the game. It was the Bears who prevailed by 20 points, holding on after being up by as much as 44. For the Dragons, big_icky (100DT) was at his best and Bonz kicked 5.2, while RonnieRaven (106DT) and Tandy (103DT) stole the show for Las Vegas.
Sin City Swamprats v Coney Island Warriors at Underground Stadium
With the strong start to the season, the 7-5-1 Rats were beginning to falter and hoped that this could be a get-right game for them, at home against the hit and miss 4-9 Warriors. But much like their season of late, they started sluggish, finding themselves down 18 points after the first term, whittling that deficit back to 10 and then to 5 at the penultimate change. But the Warriors fought until the final whistle, with Tonga Bob (2 goals, 2 touches, 19DT) kicking the game winner after the Rats hit the lead with 2 minutes to go in the game. For the Warriors, toxic (113DT, 3 goals) and Stokey (25 touches, 95DT) led the way to victory. For Sin City, ant555 (95DT), philreich and damicky (79DT) were amongst the best players.
Roys FFC v East Side Hawks at Brunswick Junction Oval
A tale of two sides, one vying for the double chance, the other just trying to get A chance. As the Roys attempted to keep pace with the front of the pack, they had the visiting Hawks, on a 4 game losing streak, desperate to fight and keep their finals hopes alive. The Hawks with nothing to lose, got the better of the two starts, holding the strong Roys team to just 0.4 for the quarter. But the Roys were not to be denied, kicking 7 goals in the second and a combined 11 of the next 14 goals to finish comfortable winners. Once the Roys got out of first gear they never really looked troubled. For the Roys, TheGoatBaron (5 goals, 62DT) was a stalwart up front and SpecialBruce (77DT) made his disposals count. Loonerty (69DT) and Zoops (67DT) were brave but ultimately outmuscled.
Round 16 | Roys v Hawks | 3 | SpecialBruce (ROY) | 2 | TheGoatBaron (ROY) | 1 | @Pure Grant (ROY) |
Gumbies FFC v Gold City Royals at The House of Gumby
The Royals turned up to the House of Gumby on the back of a 4-win streak, heading in the opposite direction to the Gumbies coming off a loss. “Win and In’ was the mantra all week as they knew the win would secure a finals berth and a crack at the big dance. The Gumbies however, knew that finals was on the line for them also and were not going to back down easily, taking a 19-8 lead to start. The Royals managed to thwart most of the Gumbies plans to be up by 2pts with one quarter to go, and despite the best efforts from Falco and co, the Royals never surrendered the lead, kicing 4 goals to 1 to win and secure a S37 finals berth. Brick Loosener (71DT) was one of the few Gumbies that stood up when counted and both CakeEater (71DT) and @Sarahsmiles (68DT) were big for the Royals. Brenton Davy also kicked another 4 goals on the way to a possible FRED medal.
Round 16 | Gumbies v Royals | 3 | @SarahSmiles (GCR) | 2 | Brick Loosener (GUM) | 1 | BlueE (GUM) |
BYE: Baghdad Bombers
Sitting at 3-10 and eliminated, one could forgive the Bombers for giving up. But they engaged in a fierce battle against The Bye, hitting 150 points for the first time this season. Pugsley kicked 10 goals and they were full of pressure and intent. Unfortunately, The Bye remains as undefeated as Father Time, winning the contest 157-155. Better luck next time, Baghdad
