At this stage, surely Nic Nat coming back would be for a farewell game. At 33, averaging 12 games a year for the last 8 years with limited time on ground. It makes me sad as he's an all time favourite of mine since his Swannies days, but you'd have to be questioning the point of it at this stage.

Nic Naitanui’s return has been pushed back further as the West Coast star continues to battle an Achilles injury that has plagued his season.
Naitanui has been listed as 6-7 weeks away for the past three weeks, meaning he is now unlikely to feature until round 18 at the earliest and later should he come back through the WAFL.

Nothing we don’t know or hasn’t been discussed here.

Mitch, if you’re reading this, hi mate

Mitch actually got a direct quote from the club, which is more than pleb fans get.

Honestly the club should be tapping Nic on the shoulder along with Shuey and Hurn at years end.

He’s not going to play a game this year and I find it even more unlikely that he’ll be able to get his body right and keep his weight down going into next season when he’ll be turning 34.

That 2 year deal looking more and more like shocking list management with each passing week he’s on the sidelines.

Seems like that doesn't it.

Perhaps the club is being creative in how it meets the minimum cap spend, extending veterans that won't play so the youngsters don't end up getting paid above value like Gold Coast and GWS...

Then after 2024, they retire and the club suddenly has enough cap space on hand to RFA T.English.

Crazy like a fox if so - we can only hope.

Willie wanted out.

Good riddance.

Rather have Nic around the club. Seems like a ripper bloke despite not playing.

West coast's exact problem at the moment is we have a lot of ripper blokes getting paid to wear club polos, do rehab, and sit in the stands watching their teammates get flogged by teams with less ripper blokes but more functional pairs of legs.

Last year Rioli was 26. He has a young family to support and because of his late entry to the game and time spent on WADA suspension really only had 2-3 years of peak earning ahead of him.

Due to his talent and output to date he also had multiple clubs interested in him last year. He would have been bonkers not to take the money. He's not going to be earning this sort of money when his football career ends and loyalty and gratitude aren't going to pay a mortgage.

Nisbett's hyper aggressive press release afterwards was one moment where it was pretty clear the club had jumped the shark. We didn't stick with Rioli through the WADA sanctions because we're a charity, we did it because he was a really good footballer who had shown he had what it takes to perform at the highest level before his suspension. To not pay a player what the market says he's worth, to choose to spend the money elsewhere on a foolish contract and then rage out at Rioli for making the obvious decision was just weird.

AFAIK we were tapped out on salary cap. It's only next year the pressure starts to be relieved. Then in 2025 there is a gaping chasm of money.

Every time I think about that 2 year nicnat deal I just think about junior rioli, aged 27, who could still be playing for west coast if we matched port.

Instead nisbett spent the money on a 34 year old who can't walk and twitter flamed rioli for wanting to get paid.

I thought the sticking point was the length of the contract as much as anything

Port were offering him a 4 year deal where the max we were prepared to offer was 3

There are ways around that (ie more up front).

But even then, how much sense does that make in the context of our other contracts? We happily offered naitanui (32 at the time) 2 years but giving Rioli (27) 4 years is too risky?

Well obvious answer is Rioli's multiple drug incidents made giving out a deal that long a risky proposition. Rioli was damn lucky we didn't terminate him when he was caught with pot at the airport when he was already awaiting the verdict on his ASADA ban for 2 tampering incidents.
Port have pushed all their chips in to win a flag between that and the JHF deal, we arent in the same position.

Good riddance absolutely stuffed our 2019 finals series up. Then more issues in 2021, looked uninterested at times, unfit lacked discipline off field. The club should be happy to move on.
I was pissed when that campaigner left but seeing how average he is playing in a well performing side, I'm now happy we can replace him with a new draftee next year. He wouldn't add much to our current team and will probably be cooked in a couple of years when we're contending again (his lack of discipline and fitness makes me think he won't have a long career).

Buller and Teal will be the ones I’m watching, wondering “what if?”
I don't know anything about Teal but the issue with Buller, from what I see, is that he plays the same position as JWilliams, who's 3 years younger, and Jamieson. You'd have 3 developing ruck/forwards in the BEagles, all fighting each other for game time in the same position.

For me, picking him could hinder development of the other 2, as well as himself.

Teal I was keen on, I saw him as a nice mid / HBF option. I am happy that Hansen Jr went to Norf instead of Freo.

100% it's a farewell game. Not a chance his getting another contract after this season.

33 years old and been injuried all season.
There isn't many 33 year olds that are completely healthy getting another contract at that age and his been injuried. This club is completely delusional if they gave him another season. Nic Nat is well and truly done at AFL level.
