Official injury list (10) released 20/8

Season (10) :
• Noah Long (Knee)
• Elijah Hewett (Foot)
• Tyler Brockman (Ankle)
• Callum Jamieson (Ankle/Knee)
• Dom Sheed (Foot/Hamstring)
• Luke Edwards (Concussion)
• Josh Rotham (Abdominal)
• Tom Barrass (Back/Hamstring) - Was 1-2 weeks
• Jeremy McGovern (Thumb) - New
• Jamaine Jones (Concussion) - New

It’s the last game of the season so all players are now listed as out for the season

Chesser and Burgiel have both been removed from the list after recovering from their respective injuries

Andrew Gaff has retired and won’t be available to play

Ok, apart from the captain obvious headline and it being a splinters article this actually provides some useful information

Most notably -

“The West Australian understands the injury was not reported to the programs Hewett was involved in pre-draft.”

meaning the club would not have been aware there was a problem with his feet when drafting him

There was also this explanation of the issue by Larkins

Larkins said surgery to remove the sesamoid bone would be the last resort for the young midfielder.
“A lot of cases I see of people who have that pain in their foot for a year or two and have tried everything so they come to see whether there’s something magic to be done,” Larkins told The West Australian.
“They (the sesamoid bone) can be taken out, they’re not much bigger than the size of a normal pea and they’re associated with the tendon that flexes your toe up and down, so they’re not a critical part of the foot joints.
“The rest program is usually quite a long time. They usually try cortisone injection, the podiatrist gets involved - it’s quite feasible if a year or two goes by when people are trying to deal with it if it keeps occurring then the doctor will consider whether taking out those small bones is a better solution.”

And this saying that if surgery becomes the last resort it has a high success rate and that even on worst case scenarios a return by May is reasonable

“I think it’d be unusual with this particular sesamoid condition that it leads to longer than a few months interruption,” Larkins said.
“The final solution of having the surgery and rehabilitating, that is pretty successful in the final stages of treatment options.
“Even in a worst-case scenario it might take three months so lets say he does go down that path in February he could be right to go in May, so he wouldn’t miss the season with what I’m anticipating.”

The head physio lady is a tough master though.

Rather than attempting this ballet treatment, I don't understand why they don't just get it over & done with and just do the surgery now.

Because surgery is always a last resort. Surgery has complications and once its removed you cant put it back.
Okay, it seems like there are some side effects after some Googling lol.
Larkin made it seem very minor.
With the sesamoid removed, running places intense strain on the foot. Running can cause pain, even after surgery, so patients must allow enough time for healing.
Removing one sesamoid typically does not affect your ability to walk or run, but some patients may lose a little strength and range of motion in their big toes.

Given how foot injuries have a propensity to linger for a long time and keep returning i think they are better to write him off for the year and focus on fixing the problem completely rather than worrying what round he might come back in. Even if we put him on the park he will not have had a pre season so he will be well short of his best. We are not even in contention for the 8, let alone a flag, so there should be no trade off's to be considered between best 22 availability/maximise chances of winning games by using band aid solutions for injuries Vrs best long term injury management options for players even at the cost of the player missing games and the best 22 availability being compromised. Typical stupid mentality from journos where they think that the priority is getting him back on the park as soon as possible even if he only lasts 5 games because it flares up again.

Explains why Darling wasn’t sighted during the final term of match sim on Friday. At least it’s pretty minor - might still be a chance for the match sim vs Freo in just under 3 weeks time.

Jones is a little more concerning but hopefully we’ve gotten on top of it early and can give him a good chance at being fit for round 1

West Coast knew that Nic wasn't available for last year but for some reason they didn't place him on the long term injury list, it was so obvious he wasn't going to return, they could have picked a second MSD player. They will probably do the same this year.

I thought we had the option to pick a 2nd MSD player last year but we didn't rate anyone available.

Obviously costs cap to put someone on and 20k to delist a MSD player after only half a season .

On another note I wonder how many more preseasons it will take to change the MRP turf ?

NicNat said himself that the diagnosis that rules him out wasn't until a couple of days after the MSD...

Pretty much this.

It was either Simmo or ROB who said they didn't want to draft someone, just to have them play WAFL and delist them 6 months later.

Larkins invoking Godwin's Law with his suggestion of Finals Solutions.
Dunno where you think you are goering with that?

I think the whole board should panzer idea of Godwins law being invoked Anne frankly you should be ashamed of yourself. Dönitz do it again.

You are certainly ‘upping the ante’ as the season gets nearer. Good stuff. Please keep it going 🤣

Yeah if true then logic says their expectations of Pick No58 would have been SFA - which has turned out to be wrong.

Point being, until a player is better known (than at draft time) there is some guesswork in evaluating their ability.

When you’re completely RS - as we were - then I’d have thought that the strategy would be to get in as many players as possible recognising that for the several who might be a bust you might also find a couple of good’uns. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Posted this in the media thread but putting it here as well since there’s some good insight into our injuries and what’s contributing to them
