It’s the last game of the season so all players are now listed as out for the season

Chesser and Burgiel have both been removed from the list after recovering from their respective injuries

Andrew Gaff has retired and won’t be available to play

You would hope the AFL would take the opportunity to do something educational with Tom's injury and if they wanted to be legit, expand the parameters/definitions for duty of care.

There was a brief period a few years back where they seemed to crack down on tunnelling but it seems to have drifted off the hot list somehow.

It's one of the most dangerous actions left in the game.

Yeah it is incredibly dangerous and also where the player is at their most vulnerable, very little they can do to protect themselves when they are already in the air.

If he gets to 150 this year, call it a day. Pretty awful injury
If we lose him then that's 3 best 22 players we've lost over 5 years to early retirement (Venables, Shep and TB). That's shocking luck.

A bit like us losing two brownlow medallist midfielders in the 07 offseason (Judd, Cousins). In some ways we've been lucky to fully bottom out after our last two flags (given us the chance to get the top talent to go again).

Seems like it’d be hard to umpire though.
They had a focus on cracking down on it around 10 years ago and then seemed to forget about it. They would award a free kick if the grounded player pushed the lower body of the one who had jumped. I don't think it needs to be any more complicated than that.

Fair.

I can foresee in another ten years or so the courageous move of 'backing into incoming traffic' with eyes only on the ball for the mark may be discouraged or be penalised.

Incredibly courageous, obviously, but can inadvertently lead to tunnelling.

Also, there are cases of blatant tunnelling sometimes and when that happens the offending player needs to be suspended for numerous weeks.

Yeah I had a quick check online and it seems like Ross made a fuss out of Nick Riewoldt getting tunneled heaps so that might have triggered something with the umps.

Clearly something changed as Vlastuin and Grimes have made a career out of doing it, albeit a bit more subtly

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to contested marking down the track. Seems to be much less tightly regulated than tackling except for random cases like Yeo getting a week for trying to spoil some bloke back in the day

When tunneling was first cracked down on it was due to the action of a player trailing his opponent into a contest and running under the legs of that player when he jumped which took his legs out from underneath

From memory, the Reiwoldt action of backing into a player as he leaps was far less common until much later when tunneling had become less of a focus and thereby ignored

No different to the 90s. Heady, Pyke, Kemp I can't remember rattling off another 20 names.

Hmm. Groin soreness is always a concerning phrase and usually means the players training gets backed off for a few weeks before a slow build back to fitness - see Rotham and Ginbey as examples this preseason.

On the other hand hopefully we’ve caught it early and it’s not too much of a setback for him. Jamaine Jones was reported by the club as having groin soreness a few weeks ago before being in full training only a week later, so hopefully it’s something like that.

Not too concerned about Harry’s finger injury unless it’s some complex fracture. Can usually keep running with hand injuries and don’t normally take that long to heal.

Fingers crossed Hall has avoided the dreaded S word - from the clip it didn’t look great though…
