H

Wasn't White trialled as a defender early last year and wasn't much chop at it.

He was trialled as a defender in the VFL and killed it. He was performing better than Marsh and Marsh got the nod in the seniors. Not sure if that would translate to AFL form but it's worth considering.

I can't speak for the VFL form. He definitely played one match in the seniors in defence and it was so horribly bad that they obviously thought let's never try that again. Agreed that it's not a big sample size but my point is it has been tried.

Although to be fair to White the quickness and ease which the ball gets into the opposition forward line would make even the best defenders look silly.

Carlton game last year, came in and was asked to play CHB. Was the only game he got in defence and not really a game to assess him in that role as we got spanked through the midfield.

Thanks for the detailed rundown Snoop. Very interesting. Rayner seems like a risk at #1 if his endurance is that bad. Is the rest of his game that good?

Think I'd much prefer Stephenson at our pick than the other 2. Fills a definite list need (tho pity he's not a few cm taller).

I read that Naish's disposal efficiency coming in to this year was quite poor so that concerns me.

I would love Stephenson. Think a great fit for us but we are so bereft of falls you'd think they would be itching for Brander to have played some good footy in 2nd half and for him to be available.

Agree. Problem with Jesse though doesn't read the ball in flight well

The match he kicked 2.2 and had 4I50's? He played forward that week. I remember it well because logic was in short demand amongst the MC with him spending the previous month in defense at VFL level (performing well) only to receive the call up as a forward with Cloke in the two's.

I don't remember a senior match that he performed poorly in whilst down back, but it could well be the case just not that one.

On paper he sounds like a type we need but I'm sure I've read over the years that at U18 level the coaches have a bit of a gentleman's agreement and don't try and install the same level of negative tactics you'd see in the AFL to quell these flashy outside types and therefore you need to be more cautious when judging the worth of these players.

Not scared he might be another Cale Morton?

No worries. Was sure that was the game but happy to defer. So which game was it?

Round 4 vs Melbourne. 12 disposals and promptly dropped again for the next game. Played in defence in the VFL and showed week on week improvement as he adjusted to the position when he was recalled in round 7 to play forward where he stayed for the rest of the year :drunk:

Nah I have seen enough of him 1:1 to know he can win the footy. If I was critical of him I'd say he can flash in and out but that was the same for SPS last season.

A school of thought with him is he is bursting to go bc he has just played so much high end junior footy and is desperate for next step.

Having said that there are others am keen on and Brander (or Balta but unlikely) is one but I don't want to take one for the sake of it. If he isn't good enough to warrant that pick we should be trading into the top 25 of the draft and getting a couple more. Plenty of good talls available later.

I see what you mean Snoop. Like the cut of Stephenson's jib. Got jets, takes the game on and good finisher:

anyone who uses the phrase, 'cut of his jib' is alright by me.

Stephenson looks like he has some real x factor which we certainly lack, but on the flip side some of his field kicking wasn't too flash. Has some serious toe mind you.

Looks an interesting package overall.

Yep. Also imagine him as a 5-6th forward with maybe Sam reid, Moore, Elliott and Fasolo
Seems like another WHE type to me. Bring him in to Collingwood under the current regime and they'll turn him in to an unflashy robot, same as what's happened to WHE this year.

Dare I say it, somewhat Daisy, (original version) like?

A few alternate versions there. White did play a few consecutive games at VFL level and other than his first game performed very well. I would say in the very least it ran him into what was to become his best form with us.

He got called up for the Carlton game, where there was no Cloke. However, he played in the back line to start with and was doing OK. Reid was played forward in a new look setup (Reid & Moore - back to the future?) but got injured early and it forced them to switch Jesse forward where he proceeded to play quite well (compared to our forwards like Cloke at that point). The rest was history, they left him forward for the rest of the season and he played some of his best footy before fading as he does.

So Jesse was given about a quarter and a half at AFL level as a defender. Personally I think Jesse would have been a revelation had he been kept back, in the same way Liam Jones has been. I think it was the only chance to save his career. Its probably too late to try it now, but I remain frustrated that we never gave it a proper go in the same way its frustrating they haven't properly committed to playing Reid forward. Our inability to be flexible and think outside the square has restricted us and is my main criticism of Bucks.
